Mercedes has just signed off a new engine family which will see most full-sized Mercs in future run four-cylinders, downsized V8s and… straight sixes.

A friendly Mercedes engineer recently met CAR to disclose the engine plans for future models, including the surprise disclosure that Merc plans to switch to straight sixes, like its rivals over in Munich.

It's fair to say I almost choked on my breakfast croissant when I found out the details of the next MB engine generation which has just been signed off for release in 2015.

    Mercedes' future four-cylinder engines
Again, there will be a family of new low-cost fours, and the big-bore V8s will be replaced by a series of downsized turbocharged 4.0-litre units.

So far, so good. But who would have expected that the V6 is on its way out, both in diesel and petrol form?

Merc does a BMW and goes straight six
Instead, Mercedes-Benz is going to revive the in-line six for use in its larger cars. Our source at Daimler suggests it will be available in single and twin-turbo guise.

What with the engines flowing from the Renault-Nissan empire after the alliance – with three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines bound for future Smart and smaller Mercs – it sounds like tomorrow's Mercedes models will have quite a different feel to today's.

Carbon fiber Mercedes-Benz E-Class in development

Superleve Classe E será feito de carbono e pesará menos 350 kg do que o modelo atual

[Editor's note: Photos are of the current E-Class Coupe.]
German car magazine Auto Bild is reporting in its latest issue that Mercedes-Benz is working on a superlight E-Class.
The lightweight edition of the E-Class will be made of carbon fiber (with more rigidity than steel) and weigh in at around 1,300 kg (2860 lbs) - which will be 350 kg (770 lbs) less than the standard model.
The superlight E-Class will also see a new design, influenced by the CLS, with engineers free to go with features such as gullwing doors or no B-pillar given the rigidity of the carbon structure.
The model also seems intended to lower Mercedes-Benz's fleet fuel-economy and CO2 quotients because the automaker is considering both hydrogen fuel-cell and petrol-hybrid drivetrains for the lightweight E-Class.
The superlight E-Class is due in 2015.

The most spectacular new film car for Hollywood: Smart 341 Parkour vence o Los Angeles Design Challenge 2011

The most spectacular new film car for Hollywood comes from Sindelfingen. The designers at the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Sindelfingen convinced the jury of the Los Angeles Design Challenge 2011 with the smart 341 Parkour and the exciting reporter story “Annie get the Grannies”. This meant that smart won the prestigious design contest, which takes place every year within the framework of the Los Angeles Auto Show, for the second year running.

This year’s Los Angeles Design Challenge was not just about developing the Hollywood car of the future, but also about inventing a story worthy of Hollywood. “With the 341 Parkour smart hit the nail on the head: the design combines innovation and functionality with an exciting film plot” is how the jury consisting of multi-discipline design professionals justified their decision.

With the smart 341 Parkour the Mercedes-Benz designers created a revolutionary super all-rounder with a completely transparent passenger cell for maximum all-round visibility. It can drive normally on the roads, climb up the façade of skyscrapers and even fly! This is the vehicle that reporter Annie Angle sets off in to research her first title story which she hopes will kick-start her career. She has read in the newspaper that the incredible “smart Granny Robots” have gone missing and sets off to find them.

For the film story the designers took up the visionary smart concept which won them first place in the Los Angeles Design Challenge last year. Then the smart 454 was knitted from carbon fibre by “smart Granny Robots”.

The film for Mercedes-Benz “Silver Lightning” has been awarded as “Best Animation”.

The announcement that Mercedes is to discontinue the Maybach brand is probably no surprise. But its axing also closes the chapter of Mercedes’ nightmare decade.

It more or less started with the launch of the Mercedes A-Class in 1997, one of few really radical cars of recent times, but one whose launch was marred by a roll-over incident that went global, much in the way of build and mechanical problems in the first few years of production.

Even the E-Classes produced in this period were either ageing disgracefully (Merc spent much money de-rusting and re-painting the mediocre W210) or battling engineering problems (the W211 suffered, among other issues, significant autobox failures and an experiment with electric braking was abandoned mid-series).

Mercedes also failed to make the grade with the all-new Smart brand. Although it was hard to fault the freshness of the thinking, again the project was marred by numerous problems, not least the vast amount of money Smart and its all-new factory managed to lose.

Maybach was first revived as a concept at the Tokyo show in 1997, before going on sale in 2002. It may have squeezed onto the market before BMW’s new Rolls Royce Phantom, but the old-school S-Class platform and odd Merc-meets-Rover-75 styling did not match up to the Phantom’s aluminium spaceframe and cutting-edge looks.

Indeed, BMW’s handling of the re-birth of both Rolls Royce and Mini and its consistency with its own-brand vehicles over the last 15 years has been notably superior to what arch-rivals Mercedes have managed. Mind you, it’s a toss-up as to whether Mercedes’ purchase of Chrysler or BMW’s purchase of Rover Group was the bigger corporate disaster.

Of course Mercedes came roaring back into contention with the excellent 2007 C-Class and 2009 E-Class, both of which saw a conscious return to quality and thorough engineering. The planned demise of Maybach, leaked out just ahead of the 2011 Tokyo show, fourteen years after the brand was revived, marks the last model born in an era that most at the three-pointed star would rather forget.
