This is not the BMW eco concept going to the Frankfurt motor show, but a five-year-old design study, according to the company.
A spokesman for BMW this morning told Autocar that it is a model being moved from the central design facility.
BMW eco-concept for Frankfurt
The car is one of many studies made to explore different design directions and aerodynamics.
BMW is planning to reveal an environmental sports car concept at the Frankfurt show.
The EfficientDynamics Vision is designed to show how efficient a performance car can be and will feature eco innovations in the drivetrain and materials.
This suggests it could use aluminium or even fabric, as seen in the previous Gina concept car.
It is likely to feature intelligent aerodynamic systems that could one day find their way on to BMW road cars.
Expect the concept to be powered by either a hybrid powerplant, which could be a diesel, or an all-electric motor.
We have seen BMW build limited edition runs of the ///M3 in many markets. From the ///M3 “Edition”, to the “Tiger Edition” in China and even the matte grey version for the US, so why not build a “Sportwagon” ///M3? Rumors are floating around that ///M may be toying with this idea and that they had built a tester early on in the E9X development so it is a distinct possibility.
For all of you getting ready to say that there would be too much work required- not really, it would just be the rear quarters of the sheet metal and the rest would be bolt ons (sound familiar?). The real question is if the car would sell. If this limited run of less than a hundred for worldwide sales is even to be formally considered BMW would need to at least break even on the car. This means it would have a fairly significant price premium over other models (our best guess would be around $65k with a full carbon fiber roof). If you factor in the limited numbers, the practicality and performance that is actually significantly less than say even an X5 ///M so while expensive it is not astronomical.
As wagon lovers we are all for an M3 wagon, it would be a way for wagons (at least in the US) to go out with a BANG! and be the answer to the CTS-V, Mercedes and Audi performance wagons that are currently running around with no competition from BMW. Will the market support such a car is an entirely different question and more than likely the answer will be one that we rather not hear.
Boas pessoal.
Podiam tirar-me uma duvida?

Woodcliff Lake, NJ, February 1, 2011- Premiering online today is "The New City", which is Chapter One of a new BMW Documentary Film Series, "Wherever You Want to Go". "The New City" makes a bold attempt to understand the ways in which we will live in the future and how it will significantly impact the way we move.
Currently 50 percent of the world lives in cities and by 2030 nearly 5 billion people will live in sprawling "Megacities" (cities with more than 10 million people). As a result, personal space and modes of transportation will be among the biggest issues impacting our future quality of life. Will the automobile-as we currently know it-be compatible with these Megacities of the future? BMW will address these questions and more in Chapter One.
"The New City" can be viewed online now at BMW Activate the Future | Home and it features: Astronaut Buzz Aldrin; Futurist and conceptual designer for Blade Runner, Aliens and Tron, Syd Mead; Google VP Marissa Mayer; ZipCar founder Robin Chase; Treehugger.com founder Graham Hill; Ridelust.com editor-in-chief Mike Musto; Reinventing the Automobile co-author Lawrence Burns; and Director of Environmental Affairs, Richard Mattila.
Director: Kurt Mattila. Production company: Prologue Pictures. Run time: 5 min 57 sec.
Additional chapters will appear each Tuesday throughout the month of February. To allow viewers to better engage with the films and to add to the ongoing dialogue, BMW designed an innovative new video player specifically for the films. Viewers can access additional content around a theme, quote, or speaker in real time, while giving them the option to pause the main viewer. Additionally, they can also post their own thoughts or comments directly to specific moments of the film for others to see and react.
About BMW Documentary Films "Wherever You Want to Go"
BMW Documentary Films "Wherever You Want to Go" is a collection of four films, broken into chapters, which focuses on the future of mobility, cities and technology. The series is inspired by the launch of the BMW ActiveE, an electric vehicle. Each film features interviews with a diverse range of thought leaders to create a holistic look into the opportunities and challenges of our future world.
Developed in collaboration with kirshenbaum bond senecal + partners, the films precipitate a unique collective engineering project, dubbed "Activate The Future" designed to build a community of people who are passionate about working together to create the future, rather than waiting for it to happen to them. Participants are encouraged to discuss, share and actively participate through use of proprietary technology.
About ActiveE
The BMW ActiveE will be an electric vehicle based on a BMW 1 Series Coupe that will use electric motor and battery cell technology developed in-house. It will represent the second phase of a three-phase electric vehicle development plan that will lead to a dedicated electric vehicle that will launch in 2013. The BMW ActiveE will be available for lease beginning this summer.
