Mitsubishi has given a preview of its new Racing Lancer rally car, which combines elements from both its new Lancer sedan and previous Pajero rally vehicles and is ready to tackle the rally circuit. The Racing Lancer features a sportback profile as seen in the recently previewed Lancer Sportback five-door, and Mitsubishi is hoping to entice a new generation of car purchasers by building on its racing heritage for its new production models.
Developed as a cross-country rally car, the Racing Lancer is being groomed to make a splash at the 2009 Dakar Rally. The Dakar’s move from Africa to South America will prove an interesting challenge to the new Racing Lancer, and Mitsubishi is hopeful of a podium finish following the successful trial period of the new engine.
The car is powered by a 3.0L turbocharged V6 diesel race engine, designed to raise Mitsubishi’s diesel profile - in much the same way that Audi did with its R10 Le Mans car.
Mitsubishi is also planning on launching its new passenger car strategy at the Paris Motor Show, and one of the key elements of this will be a focus on diesel technology for a ‘green solution’ to current fuel and environmental issues.
