The man behind the Karma extended-range electric sports sedan, company boss Henrik Fisker, revealed some ambitious new plans to develop the brand's lineup during the European launch of the saloon model. According to one report from British magazine What Car?, Fisker confirmed the development of a new crossover that will combine elements from sporty estate and SUV models, and which will be revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show in September before it allegedly reaches showrooms in 2012.

No other details were given about the crossover, but we reckon it will most likely be shown in pre-production form.
Aside from the Karma and the as of yet unnamed crossover, Fisker is also said to be working on the production version of the 2009 Karma S coupe-convertible (pictured in our gallery) and a smaller and more practical model called the Nina, both of which are due to enter production in 2013.

In addition, Fisker said that the company has plans for a four-wheel drive version of the Karma as well as a new two-speed transmission designed to improve fuel economy and offer a higher top speed.

    Press release:

ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Fisker Automotive announced today the signing of an agreement with BMW that will cover the supply of engines and other components for future Fisker models.

BMW will supply a four-cylinder turbocharged engine for the next generation of Fisker cars, code-named 'Project Nina', which are scheduled to go into production in the re-commissioned former GM plant in Wilmington, Delaware at the end of 2012 and be on sale globally in 2013.

Fisker will show a new Karma shooting brake at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show.
Customers of the Karma have been disappointed by the boot space – pinched by the bulky batteries and range-extender hardware – so Henrik Fisker's team has designed a new shooting brake to offer an expanded luggage hold while retaining the grace of the four-door coupe.

Fisker shooting brake: a lifestyle estate

The shooting brake is understood to be spun off the Karma architecture, so will keep the range-extender hybrid drivetrain.
We'll see it finally at the Frankfurt motor show on 13 September 2011.
The Karma is the first in a swelling range of Fisker electric cars. It plans a new executive sized model in 2013 dubbed Project Nina, which will use a BMW powertrain.

A BMW engine? Are they doing deals with everyone now?

Munich is keen to do powertrain supply deals. It's already offered its 1.6 petrol engine for use in future Saabs, and now it's agreed to supply Fisker with its 2.0 turbo petrol for use in future models.
Fisker CEO and founder Henrik Fisker said: 'The BMW engine was an obvious choice for us, as BMW is known for producing the best and most fuel efficient gasoline engines in the world. We are very pleased to have signed this agreement with BMW.'

Fisker has opened a new office in Munich to smoothe over the engine supply deal.
It expects to sell 40% of cars in the US and Europe each, with the remaining 20% of global sales headed for Asia.

Fisker Surf Concept Preview: Plug-In Hybrid Shooting Brake

The Frankfurt Auto Show is ramping up its action a full week out of the first press days, and the latest to join the fray is the FiskerSurf concept. In this teaser image, we get an idea of what to expect, and it's good.

Fisker hasn't had a hard time generating the right curves and lines to get people interested in the Karma for reasons other than its green plug-in hybrid/range-extended powertrain, and from the looks of the Surf's preview sketch, it won't either.

Best of all, it looks to be wearing a shooting brake body style, making it the latest in the rebirth of the two-door sports wagon among high-end automakers. The current benchmark for the shooting brake realm is the Ferrari FF, and while we don't expect the Fisker Surf to approach the FF's performance levels, it should still be quick and luxurious--and of course, fuel efficient. The Karma, for instance, manages 408 horsepower, 5.8 seconds to 60 mph, 125 mph top speed, and 50 miles of all-electric driving before tapping into its gasoline onboard generator.

For more on the technology that's likely to underpin the Surf, check out our preview of the production Karma from last year's Paris Motor Show.

Frankfurt 2011: Fisker Surf, verde y voluptuoso
