Nissan Maxima (Concept Sports Sedan) - 8ª geração (2015)

Nissan Sport Sedan Concept - 2014

When the Cobo Center opens its doors in a couple of weeks for the Detroit Auto Show, there'll be plenty of new metal on display – and this is the latest.

Nissan announced today that it will bring a new Sport Sedan Concept to the Detroit show, releasing the short statement below accompanied by the teaser image above. Expected to hint at the next Maxima, the concept "previews a new energetic design direction that amplifies Nissan's legendary approach of applying sports car principles to a sedan."

That's about all Nissan is saying for now, so we'll have to wait a while longer to find out more. But the concept will be joined on the show floor by the IDx Freeflow and IDx Nismo concepts that'll be showcased for the first time in North American after their debut at the Tokyo Motor Show over a month ago.

    - Nissan Sport Sedan Concept offers an advanced look at a future production sports sedan
    - Embodies next-generation Nissan design signatures
    - Nissan IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO concepts make first North American appearances
    - Press conference set for January 13, 2014 at 3:50 p.m. EST

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan continues its rollout of show-stopping advanced concept vehicles with the world debut of the stunning Sport Sedan Concept at the 2014 North American International Auto Show. The Sport Sedan Concept will be joined by the North America debuts of the Nissan IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO concepts, which were among the most popular vehicles at the recent Tokyo Motor Show.

The Sport Sedan Concept previews a new energetic design direction that amplifies Nissan's legendary approach of applying sports car principles to a sedan. The IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO's innovative, eye-catching designs offer two different approaches to a next-generation compact vehicle – one expressing a casual, lifestyle-focused vision and the other an ultra-sporty design that looks as if it came directly from a driving video game.

The trio of concepts will be revealed at a press conference on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 3:50 p.m. EST and displayed throughout the public days of the show, which runs at Detroit's Cobo Hall from January 18th through 26th.

                  Nissan Sports Concept

The new Nissan Sport Sedan Concept is one of the most impressive world premieres at the2014 Detroit motor show, and while we are aware of the first question that will come to mind upon seeing the pictures – whether it previews the next generation Maxima, we can't give you a straight answer (yet), and we'll explain why.

Nissan never mentioned the word "Maxima" in the press blurb, but it does say that the study applies "real sports car performance standards and new design philosophies to a 4-door sedan", and that it "previews a future production vehicle intended for owners with a passion for cutting-edge design and driving dynamics".

It's also very close in dimensions to the current Maxima at 191.7 in. (4,870 mm) long, 75.3 in. (1,912 mm) wide, 54.3 in. (1,378 mm) tall, with a wheelbase of 111.2 in. (2,825 mm) – to be precise, it's a hair bigger in all directions but height.

All told, and unless Nissan has plans for a second big sedan with a sportier orientation, we think that the concept either very loosely or directly hints at the Maxima's replacement – hopefully, it's the former.
Besides talking plenty about the design, Nissan mentions that the study comes with a retuned version of its 3.5-liter V6 producing more than 300-horses backed by a sport-tuned Xtronic CVT driving the front wheels (21-inch all around), and that the car "features an innovative suspension layout with performance dampers".

Have a look at the photos below and give us your impressions of the concept in the comments

Well folks, if you liked the Nissan Sport Sedan Concept that's on display at the Detroit motor show, we have good news, and we'll get straight to the point by sharing the words of company Executive Vice President, Andy Palmer, who had this to say about the four-door study:"We will build this car and it won't be that different from the concept car. When we bring a concept car like this we are obviously testing the reaction. Obviously you want to deliver the best that you can," said Palmer.

"We're interestingly on the cusp of a very interesting shift with the so called Gen Z, the 17-year-olds of today. By the time some of those potential concepts come to market, they will be the customers, and they think differently from the previous generation," he added.
Now, we won't blame you for being skeptical as we're often mislead by carmakers when it comes to concept and production cars, but let us remind you that Nissan is the same company that dared with the Juke and even more so with the GT-R-powered Juke R, so we're not going to be judgmental, at least not just yet.

Fred Diaz, Senior Vice President of Nissan, said that sport sedans are deeply ingrained in Nissan's heritage and that prospective buyers will appreciate the concept's aggressive design.
"When you look at how gorgeous that vehicle is, the lines, the styling of that vehicle inside and out, the interior and exterior, I think it's definitely a halo and a huge kudos for our brand and our brand image and our relevance in the marketplace," said Diaz.
Unless Nissan surprises us with a different model, the concept should transform into the next Maxima.

As proporções estão a parecer-me algo estranhas. As ópticas traseiras parecem demasiado grandes.
