    Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 - Concept (Coupe 2 lugares)

    New Bentley two-seater sports GT concept set for Geneva show | Autocar

    Bentley will unveil a super-performance, front-engined two-seater sports GT at the Geneva motor show in two weeks’ time, as a preview to a new model aimed squarely at stealing sales from Aston Martin and Ferrari.

    The car, a concept, is likely to be powered by a specially configured version of the 500bhp Audi-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 introduced recently into Bentley’s other models, although higher-powered, differently engined versions would be likely if it went into production in order to ensure that the car could match the 200mph top speed of some of its saloon siblings.

    Bentley is likely to say the car’s main purpose is to test the reaction of potential customers, but the new model was first mentioned as a production possibility by returning CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer in a press conference last summer. Autocar understands the car is likely be positioned beside the Continental GT, not below it.

    He also revealed the possibility of a saloon between the Continental Flying Spur and Mulsanne, and there have been suggestions since of a more compact SUV than the forthcoming full-sized Bentayga, which is due to hit the market next year.

    If built, the new two-seat coupé would extend the Crewe company’s product portfolio to five distinct models and push annual volume beyond 12,000 units, although production would probably be lower than the 3000 tipped for the Bentayga, which is already in demand from the biggest markets such as the US and China.

    The GT, certain to be designed in Bentley’s Crewe studio, would probably use the Volkswagen Group’s MSB flexible architecture, designed for cars of all formats positioned above the Audi range. Its front mid-engined engineering layout would likely be informed by Bentley's recent experience with its successful GT3 racing cars.

    Bentley is still in the throes of extending its Crewe production facilities for Bentayga, so if okayed for production the new GT would be unlikely to reach buyers before 2018. In today’s money it would be expected to start around £120,000-£140,000 and go upward from there, depending on bespoke equipment.

    Bentley has a long history of launching concepts at the Geneva motor show. The concept that produced the Bentayga SUV was first seen there three years ago, as was the mid-engined Hunaudières prototype (which foreshadowed Bentley’s return to Le Mans) in 1999. A small Bentley convertible, the Java, also made its debut there in 1994 but did not reach production.

The concept is a British interpretation of a high performance two seater sportscar using modern automotive design, highly skilled handcrafting, the finest materials and advanced performance technology.

    From the racing success of the company’s early years to the international motorsport success of today, ‘speed’ is part of Bentley’s DNA. This inspiration is expressed throughout the EXP 10 Speed 6, where iconic Bentley design cues are fused with progressive craftsmanship techniques and modern technologies.
    Copper elements are used as accents to both exterior and interior features to highlight the performance hybrid potential of the concept’s advanced new powertrain. Performance goals including top speed are set to challenge competitors and define a new segment benchmark.

    Contemporary Design, Yet Unmistakably Bentley

    The exterior design of EXP 10 Speed 6 is an expression of muscular, athletic surfaces inspired by the aerodynamic shapes of aircraft fuselages and wings. The ethos of the design was to develop contemporary interpretations of Bentley styling cues, which have been brought together with beauty and precision. The result is a coupe of clean, modern surfaces whilst remaining unmistakably Bentley.

    Creating exciting contemporary ideas from classic starting points is evident across the car, from the new interpretation of the iconic Bentley matrix grille and four-round headlamps to the paint colour – a deeper, richer and heavily metallic version of British Racing Green. The principles of established Bentley luxury have been applied in new and invigorating ways that use the latest technologies and techniques.

    The shapes and lines of EXP 10 Speed 6 represent a dynamic sculpture, creating harmony between sharp lines and flowing surfaces and using twisted surfaces to imply speed. Combined with muscular proportions and an athletic stance through the use of a short front overhang, long bonnet, low grille and wide rear shape with a long C-post, the exterior styling hints at high speed potential of the car.

    Every exterior material and each individual detail is designed to modern Bentley style. Cutting-edge 3D metal printing technology has allowed the grille mesh, exhausts, door handles and side vents to be delivered with micro-scale design detail precision. The iconic Bentley mesh grille, for example, is no longer a flat plane of latticework but includes varying depth with a complex 3D geometry only visible when viewed at an angle. Bentley’s renowned quilted leather has inspired three dimensional texture to the precision glass of the headlamps.
    These exterior elements come together to present a Bentley for the next generation – lean, toned and exquisitely precise, designed around new evolutions of the design elements that unite all Bentleys – past, present and future.

    Bentley’s Most Performance-Orientated Luxury Cabin

    The inspiration for the interior comes from the continuous line that runs around the cabin, driving through the console and into two symmetrical wings before flowing into the door and looping back into the console armrest. Two elegant quilted sports seats are positioned either side of the narrow centre console which houses exquisite driver controls and a highly intuitive 12” touch screen. These features combine futuristic technology seamlessly with progressive Bentley craftsmanship.

    Each detail has taken core Bentley interior DNA principles and moved them forwards. For example, the classic and purposeful Bentley knurled surface is a feature throughout the controls of the car, but now created using steel and copper together to create a two-metal 3D texture.
    Continuing the fusion of traditional materials and contemporary design statements, the doors of EXP 10 Speed 6 feature 3D quilting, milled directly in to solid straight-grain cherry wood. Each resulting diamond is finished with a copper centre.

    The centre console integrates digital information with tactile controls via a curved touch screen housed in an aluminium frame. The fascia instruments deploy from a flat position into the drivers view as the car is started using the floating “B” button integrated in to a non-symmetrical gear lever finished in aluminium, copper and cherry wood. A mechanical rev counter and digital display combine to provide the perfect balance of modern driver information and analogue beauty.

    The rear interior space is divided into two compartments designed to house a specifically designed four-piece luggage set. Like the rest of the interior, the rear has been trimmed by the master craftsmen at Bentley in the highest quality Poltrona Frau leather.

            O malfadado EXP9 foi a primeiro experimento da Bentley para pensar um novo aspecto para seus modelos que, ao mesmo tempo, rompam com as linhas inauguradas pelo bem sucedido Continental GT, mantenham certa imagem aristocrática e desportiva, mas sem remeter à agora arqui-inimiga Rolls Royce. Agora temos uma nova tentativa. No meu julgamento as ópticas dianteiras têm aspecto bem conseguido, mas a grelha dianteira está muito mal feita, parece um esboço, um simplório trapézio - quando surgiu o Continental faz melhor figura. O perfil geral do carro também não agrada, recorda aos Aston Martin, porém sem a mesma elegância.

                Curiosamente, este foi o 1º carro que me lembrei quando vi este EXP10.



                E talvez seja por isso que também gosto do perfil deste Bentley. Ainda mais do que no Aston, que tem uns "overhangs" demasiado grandes.

                    É um continental GT encurtado com uma traseira de um Viper. Não gosto tanto como do concept do Maserati, mas gosto muito. O interior então, é de babar. Este segmento está a ficar bastante concorrido e com ofertas bem apetecíveis: este EXP 10, AMG GT, Alfieri, F-Type e a praga de sempre, o 911 . Só espero que a "minha" Aston Martin lance o Vantage para breve, o actual já tem 10 anos...

                                    By Design: Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept by Robert Cumberford

                                    It looks heavy,” I said to Luc Donckerwolke, Bentley’s design director, as we regarded his new Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 coupe concept in Geneva earlier this year, hastening to add “and that’s a good thing.” After all, Walter Owen Bentley’s entire engineering background was established by 19th-century railroad technology, and given the relatively unsophisticated metallurgy of the time, his practice of making things big and strong so they wouldn’t break was a sound strategy that paid off in multiple Le Mans wins in the ’20s.

                                    That was effective in solidifying Bentley’s reputation for the next 73 years until it won Le Mans again in 2003, albeit with a thinly disguised Audi racer. I wouldn’t want to see a Bentley with the delicate grace of a Bugatti or the minimalist fragility of a Lotus, nor would the faithful clientele Bentley retained through two changes of company ownership.
                                    “Yes, we had to add a little mass here and there,” Donckerwolke acknowledged, proving that this very good Belgian designer—whose background includes leadership roles at Škoda, Audi, Lamborghini, Seat, and Volkswagen in the past couple of decades—has a proper appreciation of his present marque’s real heritage. He also has the sensibility to evolve the Bentley look back toward true British sportiness, which was completely lost in the VW Phaeton-derived W-12 coupes and sedans that were entirely too Germanic. In size, the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 is comparable to other luxury GT models such as Porsche’s current “fat” 911s and the Mercedes-AMG GT. These cars are really too well-padded and lavishly trimmed to be considered sports cars, despite the prodigious horsepower they possess. At least this Bentley and the AMG make no pretense of having a “plus two” capability, and they are better for that, close in spirit to early Ferrari coupes.

                                    SangYup Lee, the Korean-born head of exterior and advanced design at Bentley, has obviously weighed all the expectations of wealthy buyers of luxury GTs and balanced those with design elements that have become traditional for the Rolls-Royce-era Bentleys. That there hasn’t been a two-seat Bentley in decades is irrelevant. It’s an idea whose time as come, and it is very well expressed here. This is not a finished design. Putting baggage in the back only through a lift-up backlight is obviously not going to play with future owners— production hasn’t been announced, but only a fool would believe that this car won’t soon hit the market. These owners are likely to go Grand Touring with substantial amounts of (no doubt bespoke) luggage. I see this concept as a beautifully executed 3-D sketch of a car that will be important to Bentley’s future, one that should and will receive a thorough polishing. The designers all hope that the oft-heard “don’t change a thing” will be ignored by management so they can refine and perfect their ideas. We hope that, too. The Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 concept is too good not to merit being made even better.




                                    1. The use of hard lines in surfaces is typical of Luc Donckerwolke’s personal style, as seen in current Seats. The rear fender profile works well with the wheel opening.

                                    2. I suppose that the curve at the lower rear portion of the quarter window keeps it from being a straight crib of BMW’s Hofmeister profile, but it’s very close.

                                    3. The slightly depressed center section of the roof is very apparent in this view, where you can see the hard upper edge of the transitional surface.

                                    4. The front fender profile’s hard edge is interesting in that it tucks under from the wheel center aft, fading at the back edge of the door. Crisp and hard to make.

                                    5. Although you don’t easily perceive it, there is a sharp, hard edge across the main headlamp that continues in the metal and in the smaller outer headlamp before fading away. Very subtle and very nice.

                                    6. Again, a hard edge to the fender profile drops to the transverse hood surface, itself punctuated by a further depression and a central rib.

                                    7. The grille simply seems too big on the show car. Its upper edge is about as low as it can go for pedestrian safety, but the bottom line could easily be a little higher.

                                    8. Painting the model number on the radiator itself recalls common practice 90 years ago, a nod to the Bentley’s distinguished past as a racing touring car.

                                    9. This little spear, cantilevered from the outer molding section, is a decorative element that calls attention to the air inlet for brake cooling.

                                    10. After the disaster of the huge holes in the front of the Bentley SUV concept four years ago, the composition of two very differently dimensioned lamps respects tradition in a new way.

                                    11. Yet another hard edge, this time justified by the engine-compartment hot air outlet in the front fender, which then follows the rising door cut. Classical and elegant, one of the best features of the Speed 6.




                                    12. Double-spoke wheels are huge and look appropriately strong. The rear tires are wider, as befits a rear-wheel-drive sports machine.

                                    13. This engine-compartment outlet vent is functional and attractive.

                                    14. More hard lines in the surfaces, one above the side window, the other in the roof panel.

                                    15. The rear fender profile line runs all the way across the rear, creating a spoiler lip.

                                    16. The outer rooftop crease flows toward the rear spoiler lip where it fades, with the rear window inset from the nominal surface.

                                    17. Oval lamps are set out from the concave surface that traverses the tail of the car, itself marked by an indent between the lamps.

                                    18. No imitation racing diffuser here, just a rising surface with a central rib joining the bulging pods housing the exhaust outlets.

                                    19. Beautiful oval outlets are carefully integrated into the corner pod shapes.

                                    20. Once again, a hard line fades as it reaches another hard-line feature, here the rear wheelhouse opening.




                                    21. Over the top? Yes, but it’s rather magnificent, all these bas-relief pyramids machined from a single piece of wood, with metal squares affixed to each summit.

                                    22. The double-cowl effect in the cockpit recalls an infinity of British sports cars as well as the first Corvettes, which of course had the same inspiration.

                                    23. Bentley’s trademark lozenge seating pattern is repeated here in sculpted, thin, but supremely comfortable sport seats.

                                    24. Knurled thumbwheels abound for various adjustments. There’s even one on the transmission shift lever. They look and feel good, and they work beautifully.

                                    25. Interior design chief Brett Boydell paid close attention to every part of the interior, including these elegantly detailed pedals.

                                        Os faróis não casam com as grelhas (que me parecem estar na medida certa). Ficam desproporcionados (pequenos).
                                        A traseira precisa de um elemento a criar um corte entre a parte superior e inferior, introduzindo algum drama.

                                        Por favor, não comparem isto com o DB7.
