The best supercars money can buy

been high-performance showcases for the best manufacturers and rather expensive toys for the richest of car enthusiasts. Today, the technical and performance elements remain, but with a modern twist: the vast majority are designed to be used every day if needed.
‘Supercar’ is a broad term that has come to describe a range of high-performance vehicles; from hugely powerful grand tourers to mid-engined racing cars for the road, there are plenty of high-end machines that could qualify for inclusion in this list of the best. Here, we’ve brought together some of the fastest, most accelerative and exclusive cars on sale today, all of which could be used every day if you’re lucky enough to be able to afford their six-figure prices and sizeable running costs.
We’ve deliberately avoided hypercars – a category that exists on an entirely separate plane of power, exclusivity and price. For our money, each of the following is almost as fast, far more attainable and still deeply special.
    McLaren 720S

It’s one of the newest cars on this list and also one of the fastest: the McLaren 720S does 0-62mph in just 2.9 seconds, 0-124mph in 7.8 seconds and its top speed is 212mph. It offers performance that can humble some of the fastest cars from the class above, yet it remains comfortable and useable in everyday motoring – a duality that McLaren brings to all its cars.
The 720S ticks all the other boxes, too. Its dramatic styling incorporates all manner of aerodynamic aids and weight-saving touches, as well all-important wing-like ‘dihedral’ doors. The interior is covered in Alcantara and carbon fibre – the accepted combination for the raciest of supercars. It all combines to create a real sense of occasion that’s hard to match.
It’s one of the most exciting cars here, but the McLaren 720S is also one of the most useable. As in other McLarens, there are great seats that give you a fantastic driving position, which, when paired with the deliberately low dashboard and large glass area, make for a car that’s surprisingly easy to drive. The clever active suspension can be adjusted to offer a very comfortable ride and the car will even do around 22mpg – not bad for a 710bhp twin-turbocharged V8!

    Ferrari 488 GTB

The successor to the legendary Ferrari 458 Italia, the 488 GTB is better in almost every measurable way. Some might miss the bellow of the 458’s 4.5-litre V8 engine, as the new 3.9-litre V8’s turbochargers mute the roar, but one prod of the accelerator will convince you of its greatness.
Its three second 0-62mph time is fearsome, but the way the car behaves in corners is not. At speed, the car’s balance means it can corner very hard, and very, very fast, in a way that’s not at all intimidating.
While the interior of the McLaren is all very minimalist, the Ferrari 488 GTB feels as complicated as Sebastian Vettel’s F1 car with buttons where you’d expect stalk controls. There’s one very good reason for this: it means the space around the gearshift paddles is uncluttered, which is something you’ll appreciate when you’re focusing on driving.
There are two even bigger reasons why you’d choose a 488 GTB; because it looks stunning and carries the most evocative badge in the business. That it’s an exceptional car is almost a bonus.
    Porsche 911 Turbo S

The other cars in this list look and feel very exotic, but the Porsche 911 Turbo S is based on the standard 911 – itself a relatively common sight on the road.
Understatement isn’t likely to be top of a typical supercar buyer’s list, but in this company that’s exactly what the 911 Turbo S offers. To the untrained eye, it doesn’t look too different to a standard 911 Carrera, but enthusiasts will love the wider bodywork, bigger wheels and extra vents.
They’ll also love the 3.8-litre engine, which in the Turbo produces an incredible 572bhp. That translates to 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds and – thanks to huge reserves of low-down power – warp-speed overtaking ability. The Turbo S is intended as comfortable yet devastatingly quick grand tourer with a supercar-like edge, and that’s exactly what it delivers, all wrapped up in a fairly unassuming (and practical) body.
It might not be the most involving car to drive on this list, but the 911 Turbo S is certainly one of the fastest in point-to-point terms; four-wheel drive, huge reserves of grip and traction, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) and a slick PDK automatic gearbox all combine make the Turbo S a truly effortless car to drive quickly.
    Ferrari 812 Superfast

The latest in a long line of front-engined V12 Ferraris, the 812 Superfast is as potent as its name suggests. Its 6.5-litre engine – which sits roughly in the middle of the car for weight distribution reasons – produces an incredible 789bhp and almost revs out to 9,000rpm. Needless to say, it sounds fantastic – unlike so many cars on this list, the 812 doesn’t have any turbochargers to stifle its bark.
It really is ‘super fast’, too, with a 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds and 0-124mph taking just 7.9 seconds. It’ll accelerate all the way up to 211mph – although it’s unlikely many owners will find space to make the most of the Superfast’s top speed.
Continuing a modern Ferrari trend, the 812 Superfast is bristling with technology that makes even this fearsomely powerful supercar a doddle to drive at normal speeds. Push harder and the 812 demands respect, but it’s far more forgiving than you’d expect such a powerful car to be. Rear-wheel steering and fast, accurate steering help make the car feel light and agile, while its suspension can be made as soft or aggressive as your mood demands.
The 812’s interior is as modern and well finished as any other Ferrari’s, with titanium air vents, luxurious leather and an optional readout screen for the passenger side all helping make it feel worthy of the car’s huge price tag. At well over £250,000, the 812 Superfast is the most expensive cars here, but it’s also one of the very best of the breed.

      Audi R8

The Audi R8 is among the handful of cars here that you could realistically drive everyday. Now in its second generation, the years have dulled the R8’s visual impact – you might even call it understated – but there’s no doubting its depth of ability.
You can choose from two versions of a 5.2-litre V10 developing 533 or 602bhp. Before anyone dismisses the R8 as a big, expensive Audi TT, remember that the R8’s engine is also fitted in the Lamborghini Huracan.
There’s no manual gearbox available, but the seven-speed automatic gearbox offers super-quick shifts. The R8 has a four-wheel drive system that can send power to the front or rear wheels as required, making it easy to drive very quickly indeed. At higher speed, you’ll be grateful for the sharp steering and taut chassis, which help keep the car stable.
Inside, the R8 couldn’t be further removed from the complexity of the Ferraris on this list; many of the controls will be familiar to anyone who’s recently driven an Audi A3 or Audi A4.
      Ford GT

Ford is a manufacturer synonymous with everyday cars but not so much with supercars. It’s worth remembering that its original supercar, the GT40, won the Le Mans 24-hour race four times in succession in the 1960s. In 2005, the Ford GT was introduced as homage to the original, and in 2016 the latest version was launched 50 years after that original Le Mans victory.

      Best supercars to buy 2017

There’s no doubting the new Ford GT’s credentials. It’s constructed from lightweight carbon fibre and is powered by a 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine – from the same family as the 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine you’ll find in a Ford Fiesta. Admittedly no one outside of Ford has driven the 2018 Ford GT yet, but with the initial two-year production run being doubled to four, there are no shortage of buyers agreeing with us that it is one of the year’s most exciting cars.
What we do know is that it looks sensational, with active aerodynamics, suspension inspired by race cars and dihedral lifting doors. It’s unlikely to disappoint.
      Mercedes-AMG GT R

Taking a car that’s already very quick and making it faster and more track-focused is a common recipe for supercar success. The Mercedes-AMG GT R is a prime example of the breed, taking the standard GT and adding more power, racier bodywork and a sharper, track-optimised driving experience. The result is a car that looks like it belongs on the starting grid of Le Mans.
It sounds the part, too, with an uprated titanium exhaust system that emits a trademark AMG rumble, as well as playing a part in the power increase from 515bhp in the GT S model to 577 in the GTR. The twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 is a brutish engine that suits the GT R’s racey character perfectly.
If you like to unleash your six-figure supercar at trackdays, the Mercedes-AMG GT R is a great alternative to the more obvious choices like the Porsche 911 GT3. It’s not a bad road car, either – adjustable suspension and traction control mean that the car can be configured to suit your mood or the road at hand.
Remarkably, the GT R actually rides better than the standard car, even in its most extreme setting. It may be a hard-edged supercar built by AMG for the track, but this is still a Mercedes at heart – useable, high-quality and very well built.
Read on to discover the rest of the world's best supercars, including models from BMW, Lamborghini and Honda.

        BMW i8

The BMW i8 doesn’t look like a car that went on sale 2014. It wouldn’t look out of place in a new car showroom in 2024, such are those space-age looks. The collection of curves, sharp angles and those upward-opening doors look unlike anything else on the road.
Yet that’s not the most impressive thing about it. Nor is it the clever and environmentally friendly way that the carbon fibre used in the i8 is created. It’s the fact that this is a plug-in hybrid car.
It just happens to be an extremely fast one.
Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre petrol engine from a MINI, but it’s joined by an electric motor. Because the motors give instant power, it’ll accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.4 seconds. Drive it carefully, and it’ll drive using electricity alone for up to 22 miles. BMW claims fuel economy of 134.5mpg and CO2 emissions of just 49g/km. Supercars don’t come much more striking, frugal or kinder to the environment.
        Lamborghini Huracan

Critics say the Lamborghini Huracan doesn’t look as wild as a Lambo ought to, but it’s certainly the most usable car the firm has ever made. That’s because it shares much of its DNA with the Audi R8, the best ‘everyday supercar’.

It loses little of its visceral appeal as a result. Its 5.2-litre V10 isn’t short on drama or power. With 572bhp in the rear-wheel-drive LP580-2 or 602bhp in the four-wheel-drive LP610-4, acceleration is in the low three-second range.
It’s cheaper to run than the Lamborghini Gallardo it replaced, but much of the kit you’d expect from a £180,000 supercar is optional – including parking sensors, sat nav and Bluetooth.
That’s missing the point, though. The Huracan is designed to be theatrical, and with all that power, sharp styling and a clever four-wheel drive system, it is exactly that.
        Honda NSX

The Honda NSX shares its name with a mid-engined supercar that first arrived in 1990. That car was famous not only for the part that the late, great Ayrton Senna played in its development, but also for its genuine day-to-day usability.
Today’s all-new NSX takes a few points of reference from the old car – mid-mounted V6 engine, comfortable interior, striking looks – but adapts them to suit the 21st century. A far cry from the 276bhp of the original, the new car’s 3.5-litre engine produces 573bhp with help from two turbochargers and three electric motors. You can even travel entirely on electric power in Quiet mode for short periods of time, or let the car’s performance loose in Sport, Sport+ and Track modes via a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The NSX is a relatively heavy car thanks to all that technology, but it does well to hide it – not least because it’s very fast and feels light on its feet from behind the wheel. The 0-62mph sprint takes around three seconds and you’ll accelerate on to a top speed of 191mph if you have a closed runway or racetrack to play on.
Four-wheel drive means you’ll never be left wanting for grip in corners or traction off the line; you’ll be thankful for its inclusion when the weather turns, too. The NSX is a supercar that’s aimed squarely at its most usable rivals like the Audi R8; despite its supercar credentials and advanced technology, the NSX could easily be used every day – exactly as a Honda should.

                  Topgear:

That's right, BMW has made the world's first and only petrol-electric hybrid supercar. It's about as far from the usual BMW template as you can get. The engine is a tiny 1.5-litre turbo three-cylinder, mounted transversely ahead of the rear wheels

Put to rest any doubts you may have. It’s radical and other-worldly but the BMW i8 works like a charm as a sports car. You’d almost never believe it was an eco-chomping hybrid, doing an amazing impression of a 340bhp straight six rather than a little turbo triple (although synthesised, the noise is surprisingly convincing). It doesn’t quite feel 911-fast, despite a 4.4-second 0-62mph time, because high-rev drama and violence is lacking. But it’s still ruddy quick, and traction is fantastic.

Cornering is equally wonderful, despite the mish-mash of power sources and options for front and rear axles.

                  Parece um supercarro .

                    E concluem assim:

All things considered, the post-grant list price of £99k is an absolute bargain. This is a supercar from the future that out-headturns a Ferrari and is more appealing to drive and own than an Audi R8

of course, most people won't buy it to track, and when i had the opportunity to street the i8 for a week, i was well and truly impressed. so much grip! and that from such thin tires. the sound was almost cool enough to make you forget that it was synthesized through the stereo (though it gets awful repetitive). and the car is so comfortable and space-aged once you get in — i think the iDrive system is the best on the market — that you feel somehow drenched in luxury even though the cabin is fairly spartan. i really considered buying one myself. but at the end of the day it was a little too expensive, with a wait list too long and a seating position too low. i went with the 911 instead. sounds like a beast and daily drives like a champ, not as grippy in RWD though...

BMW M4 is less fun than i8:

Agora imaginem quando vier o i8 2018 (4 anos em hibridos e como 20 anos em combustao):

                                      De um forum:

of course, most people won't buy it to track, and when i had the opportunity to street the i8 for a week, i was well and truly impressed. so much grip! and that from such thin tires. the sound was almost cool enough to make you forget that it was synthesized through the stereo (though it gets awful repetitive). and the car is so comfortable and space-aged once you get in — i think the iDrive system is the best on the market — that you feel somehow drenched in luxury even though the cabin is fairly spartan. i really considered buying one myself. but at the end of the day it was a little too expensive, with a wait list too long and a seating position too low. i went with the 911 instead. sounds like a beast and daily drives like a champ, not as grippy in RWD though...
M4 is never less fun than an i8.

This is not the Aventador we know and – mostly – love. The outgoing car was a mighty thing, but it didn’t have the liveliest chassis. You were aware it was a heavy car, dominated by its engine, not something that wanted to dance to your tune. The S is a car transformed. I’d stop short of saying it’s outright playful, but the agility, the steering, the weight management, the integration of all the systems… it’s a big, big step forward.

Central to this is the new 4WS system. Everyone is fitting these now, but Lamborghini does seem to have pushed the system further than most. The rear wheel can turn up to three degrees at low speed, giving the sense that the Aventador has a 500mm shorter wheelbase. Rarely do car firms line up old against new on a launch, but they did here, and through a slalom the difference was amazing – the S was far more agile, you could feel both ends helping out, where the old car seemed to be dragging an anchor behind it. At higher speeds the rears turn the same way as the fronts, making the wheelbase seem 700mm longer. Up goes stability and up goes confidence.
On circuit it feels much more alert, too. Now, while the pictures you’re looking at show a lovely dry track, the reality was pouring rain and flooded corners. No matter which way you cut it, or how many wheels you divvy it up between, 730bhp is a lot to cope with in these conditions. Especially when it’s spat at the tarmac through 255/30 ZR20 front tyres and colossal 355/25 ZR21 rears. Due to the rear steering Lambo teamed up with Pirelli to develop a brand new P Zero compound for the car.

Now because it was wet, all the Aventador S did when you turned in, was understeer. You’d hear the tyres grumble and push wide, but although this wasn’t ideal, the important thing was that you could feel what the car was up to and do something about it. The S has a variable steering rack. Normally I hate these, but this set-up didn’t offend me. It’s very direct off-centre, but without feeling nervous because it’s balanced and assisted by the rear steering.
So when the front end slid, I could back off the throttle and the car would tighten its line. It’s surprisingly adjustable and wears its weight lightly (1,575kg is a dry weight – actual kerbweight is probably around the 1,700kg mark).
This behaviour changes depending on driving mode. On track you can ignore Strada (street) because the gearshifts are too slow and the engine not quite alert enough. Sport is spot on for wet circuit driving, sending up to 90 per cent of torque rearwards, while Corsa, which is focused on fast laps, can only direct 80 per cent aft. In Corsa you also have to put up with a fairly savage ride and a completely savage gearchange. New is Ego, which allows you to select your own settings for the steering, suspension and drivetrain. About time too.
The Aventador S retains the sequential manual ISR seven-speed gearbox. Lamborghini claims to have sharpened it up and improved it, but compared to the latest twin clutchers, it’s a dinosaur. It may be lighter and easier to package, but the shifts are either noticeably slow or head-bangingly savage. Of course you can lift-off to smooth them out, and you could argue that this is good character-building stuff. But compare it to an Audi R8 or Ferrari 488 and it feels 20 years old.

The gearchanges punctuate the wild excesses of the engine, spoil its flow. This V12… oh my god. The old adage of buying the engine and getting the rest for free? That’ll do. It’s mesmeric, howling and punching forward, making the car feel like an unstoppable force. You’re not going to notice the extra 40bhp. Lamborghini still claims the same 2.9sec sprint to 62mph, and although it’ll hit 124mph in 8.8secs and 186mph in 24.2secs, in reality that’s no faster than a Ferrari 488 GTB or McLaren 570S (we figured the 488 at 8.5secs to 124mph, the 570S at 8.6secs). But that’s not the point. This V12 doesn’t just generate noise or vibration or acceleration, it has its own life force. The same can be said for Ferrari V12s, too, so the Lambo’s not unique, but god bless them for sticking with it. This is transcendental. The top end as the needles whips up past 6,000rpm and you know there’s still 2,500rpm to enjoy… oh my.

Out on the road, well, it copes. There’s a lot of road noise, the tyres can get distracted by cambers and the like, and on light openings the throttle is snappy, but it manages and the steering doesn’t lose its way. But every Aventador you see trundling around town is missing out. It needs space to perform, and when given it and taking everything together, the Aventador S is a car you now really have fun with – and not just for the way it accelerates.
I’d love to have driven it in the dry. I reckon it would have contained the understeer much better (although the difference in tyre widths, 255 vs 355, is abnormally large) and allowed the engine to really lean on the chassis and show both off to full effect.

                                                  Espectacular:

Lamborghini doesn’t do great seats. The ones in the Aventador SV are basically two paving slabs. These are better, but they’re mounted too high and you don’t snuggle down into them properly and the side bolsters aren’t big enough to hold you in place.
The dash layout hasn’t changed much and nor has the centre console.

The dash layout hasn’t changed much and nor has the centre console. You’ll cope, but since we’re forever criticising Bentley for their ageing VW-sourced infotainment systems in the Conti GT, it’s only fair to have a pop at Lambo for the same thing. I vaguely remember seeing this system in an A4 about ten years ago. It really could have done with a refresh here, but I’m not going to argue with where Lambo spent its money – the driving experience is more important.

You can lease a Lamborghini, and I expect some people do. But the monthly payments will be bigger than most mortgages, putting you in the potentially exciting position of considering this an either/or purchase against your house. From what I remember, £271,146 is more than the average house price in the UK…

"Of course trying to write logically about a Lamborghini purchase is daft. Buying an Aventador S is a decision driven by ego and a bank account that can afford the figure in the same way you or I might lay out for a coffee at a motorway services - we’re aware it’s not great value for money, but we just want it, OK? Right now before latte/Lambo withdrawal kicks in.
CO2? The best part of 400g/km, while averaging a claimed 24.4mpg. Call it 17mpg. Or 7mpg if you’re doing what most Aventador owners do and trundling between Knightsbridge and Chelsea. Options prices haven’t been announced yet, but suffice it to say you won’t have much trouble sending the price spiralling past £300,000. Just get busy with the carbon and Lamborghini’s in-house Ad Personam department. Apparently 50 per cent of all new Lambos are now specced with some form of Ad Personam content, be it paint to match your loafers or your family crest emblazoned on the bonnet. Who knows? What’s important is that this Lambo has a strong enough personality to carry this stuff off."

" Yes, it does still understeer and it’s too heavy to be genuinely playful and the gearbox is disappointing, but a fast drive in one of these is now way more manageable, controllable and exciting."

Para mim? Venha o E63S AMG. Lamborhgini é para show offs :D
