    Gordon Murray Design - T.33 + T.50

First details emerge about Gordon Murray's newest endeavor

At a recent launch party for Gordon Murray Design, the firm's namesake let the first details fly about his latest project, which he's apparently been working on for the better part of a decade. Murray describes it as "a new class of vehicle" that through lightweight materials, a straightforward design and a small footprint, will stand the motoring world on its head. If there's anyone able to do it, it's Gordon Murray.

The idea behind the T25 (Murray's 25th clean-sheet vehicle) is to make a vehicle that will use less resources, both during production and on the road, while at the same time be a functional means of transport for first-time buyers and for families in need of second car. Inspiration has come from several different directions, but in the automotive world, comparisons to the Smart ForTwo are the Fiat 500 of yore are inevitable, but Murray is looking far beyond such staid means of schlepping.

He doesn't care what the end product is powered by, as it won't be produced by his company, instead he's allowing manufacturers to purchase the design and rebadge it as they see fit. Ideally, the cost will be under £5,000, it will require less than a quarter of the ownerships costs of an entry-level Golf and it should come in below 1,200 pounds. Naturally, it will be geared towards consumers in Europe and Japan.

Murray's design house is able to work on three projects at any one time; the first being this new micro-MPV, while the other two include a Le Mans racecar and a new sports car, due to launch in 2010. Murray says that this newest supercar will match the McLaren F1 in terms of driver involvement and engineering prowess, but for far less cash.

Expect the new Murray logo – taken from the man's clan crest – to pop up at several automotive shows in the next few years, with what may arguably be the most intriguing vehicles we've seen in recent memory.

Gordon Murray’s Designs Small-car plans for the father of supercars

What's next for Gordon Murray (center) and his band of merry engineers? Try a compact city car.

When one of the world’s most-respected auto engineers decides to go it alone and create a revolutionary small car, it’s time to take notice.

Gordon Murray—whose credits include Gran Prix-winning Brabham race cars, the McLaren F1 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren—has set up his own design consultancy, Gordon Murray Design, in England to get his revolutionary small car into production.

“I’ve been thinking about doing a really clever and different small car for the best part of the 12 years since we finished the F1, and now we’ve put together a team to do it,” says Murray.

Known as the Type 25 (T25) because it is the 25th Murray design, the diminutive car could be seen as a Smart-beater. “It’s about Smart size, but more compact in all dimensions. We like to think of it as a radical approach to mobility,” says Murray.

Murray will keep details—engine, suspension and steering designs—secret until closer to production, which is at least five years away. But key targets are good handling and refinement, low fuel consumption, light weight, innovative body architecture and adaptable body design.

Up to 14 body variants are planned. The interior will be more flexible than the Smart ForTwo, with seating for more than two. One interior, for example, would seat one adult and two children in their own seats.

Innovative material use is also important: “Nothing exotic, just well-known plastics and metals in parts where they aren’t used today,” says Murray.

Murray knows that many details of today’s cars are dictated by embedded factory equipment and methods. He believes a clean-sheet design can match radical new assembly methods. “Innovative manufacture is as much part of the project as design is,” he says. “We can design the T25 to be put together in a different and more efficient way.”

The T25 also will carry strong green credentials. Considerable research has already gone into the cradle-to-grave environmental cost of materials, parts and assembly.

Murray is planning a larger model for the U.S. market, along with a car for emerging markets that will feature a different engine from that planned for Europe and the states.

Silicon Valley venture capital firm Mohr Davidow Ventures is a significant backer, and managing partner Jonathan Feiber, formerly of Sun Microsystems, sits on the board of Gordon Murray Design.

Another major backer is Caparo, a British steel and car parts group. Caparo recently revealed a high-performance, lightweight sports car, with Murray as project consultant.

The focus for Murray and his team of 13 managers and engineers (many of them former McLaren employees) for the next 18 months is to build a running prototype of the T25 while trying to persuade a major carmaker to buy exclusive rights for production.

“We don’t want to become carmakers, but to develop the design and let carmaking experts get the T25 into production,” says Murray.

The team will design and build a prototype in workshops adjacent to buildings that once housed Ferrari’s GTO shop where F1 cars were designed in the mid ’90s.

He is already taking advantage of those facilities to work on a secret new sports-car project for a client. All Murray will divulge is “it’s a lightweight, low volume, performance sports car.”

                  Parece-me bem.

                                      iStream®- Process

The process centres on a separate body chassis assembly process.
The assembly process is separate. During the first part, the powertrain, wiring harnesses, brakes, suspension and all major components can be fitted directly onto the chassis prior to the body panels being fitted.
The body panels are delivered to the line pre-painted.
The body panels are ‘married’ to the completed chassis near the end of the assembly process, helping to reduce paint damage normally associated with a standard assembly line. All external panels can be mechanically fixed to the chassis

GORDON MURRAY DESIGN REVEAL T.25 CITY CAR SEATING LAYOUT

Gordon Murray Design's T.25 City Car is not only designed around a central driving position but an MPV package offering 6 internal layouts within the same vehicle, each layout being easily achieved within 30 seconds.

The T.25 City Car has been packaged to accept three 95th percentile occupants and the central driving position has been named 'iCentre®', although the actual concept dates back to 1966 when Gordon Murray first came up with the idea during his Mechanical Engineering studies at Durban Institute of Technology in South Africa. The three-seat configuration was put into production with the McLaren F1 and then resurrected in 1999 during the original study for Murray's City Car - then known as Project 3.

The central driving position gives unparalleled control and visibility whilst supporting the ultra-flexible interior space. This gives the T.25 a potential market advantage over the Smart Fortwo which is purely a two-seater with a small luggage capacity. In maximum 'shopping mode' the T.25 can be driver only but offers 750 litres of stowage space which is equal to 6 shopping trolleys in volume!

The two pedal vehicle does not have a gear lever but instead relies on push buttons with the options of fully automatic or manual using Forward, Reverse & Neutral.

Gordon Murray Design are currently in discussions with several interested parties to move the car into production using the iStream® Manufacturing process. iStream® is a unique, innovative method of producing cars invented by Gordon Murray Design which, amongst other things, reduces the area and investment of a typical car factory by 80%.

                                              T27 electric car

British design entrepreneur Gordon Murray has won a £4.5 million grant from the government-backed Technology Strategy board to build a three-seater electric city car, based on his recently revealed T25 petrol prototype.
The deal was announced today by transport minister Lord Drayson, who also took a drive in an early T25 prototype.
The car, dubbed T27, will be the product of a partnership between Murray’s company and British-based technology company Zytek, who will build the powertrain. The project is the upshot of a meeting between Murray and and business secretary, Lord Mandelson, last March.
The deal is worth £9 million in all, with the remaining £4.5 million of non-government funding provided equally by Murray and Zytek, who will provide.
The partners will build four prototypes over the next 16 months, one running car and three “laboratory” cars to test properties like crash structure and electrical architecture.
The first running prototype should be ready about halfway through the project, but the styling won’t be firmed up for at least six months. “We prefer to get the important bits right first,” says Murray.
Murray believes the T27’s amazingly low weight of 750kg (150kg more than T25, including a bank of new-tech lithium-ion batteries big enough to deliver a 60-70 mile range) will be a big factor in making it “the most efficient EV in the world”. He calculates that its whole-life emissions will be 27 per cent lower than its nearest rival.
Other advantages will be the T27’s compact dimensions, the fact that it is an all-new design and its use of Murray’s own super efficient iStream manufacturing process that eliminates the need for inflexible and expensive stamping processes.
The T27’s overall proportions and three-seat, mid-engined layout will draw many carry-over parts from T25, Murray says, but the car will need a new motor, gearbox, battery mounting system and inverter. Its controls and instrumentation will also have to change. “We have a good start,” says Murray, “but it’s really a matter of doing the T25 all over again.”
Zytek’s Bill Gibson and Gordon Murray have previously met briefly through motorsport, but have never co-operated before on a project. However, Murray says he’s deeply impressed by Zytek’s achievements, and believes the T27 project is going to be “a great partnership”.
He also believes it will provide a realistic opportunity to keep the first application of the iStream process in Britain, one of Murray’s long-held objectives.
“This project is jaw-droppingly imaginative,” says David Bott, director of innovation platforms at the TSB. “If we get this right it can change the world.”

No site dele existem infos acerca deste processo.
