Toyota sales No. 1 in world in first half of 2007
The Toyota Motor Corp. group said Friday that its sales in the first half of the year surpassed General Motors Corp. and was No. 1 among world's automobile manufacturers.
Sales data released by Toyota showed that Toyota alone boosted January-June sales 8 percent to 4,212,000 units, while one of its group members Daihatsu Motor Co. expanded its half-year sales by about 13 percent to 453,000 units.
In the whole, the automaker group's vehicle sales sealed a year- on-year rise of 8 percent to reach some 4,716,000 units.
The automaker ascribed the progress to the popularity of its fuel-efficient small passenger cars in North America, Europe and Asia against the backdrop of rising crude oil prices.
Toyota's global sales exceeded that of GM for the first time in the first quarter of the year. Market analysts predicted that the group is expected to take the lead for the whole year.
