"NISSAN GT-R HITS 60MPH IN 3.3 SECONDS
'Secret' launch control makes GT-R even quicker...
When we were told that the new Nissan GT-R is capable of 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds we, like most people, were very impressed. But the big news today is it won’t, it will in fact do it in 3.3 seconds.
OK that’s not a huge difference but when you consider the original figure already made it one of the quickest cars in the world, and it’s likely to cost around £60,000 in the UK, and it’s a Nissan, it makes it even more impressive.
But the best bit is the way it recorded this mind-blowing figure.
According to online mag Edmunds Inside Line they have discovered a secret launch control akin to pressing down, down, up, up, X, X, R1 and R2 on a PlayStation controller.
They got hold of a production GT-R in Japan with 1,500 kms on the clock, that is owned by journalist Jun Nishikawa.
The launch control is known to some but is not something the company wanted to shout about for some reason.
To activate it you need to configure the transmission, dynamics control and damping adjustments properly.
The transmission and damping switches have to be set to the R mode and the VDC must be switched off completely by holding the VDC-R button down for a few seconds.
It’s is then just a matter of holding the brake with your left foot and pressing the throttle with your right, similar to if you wanted to do a burnout.
But that doesn’t happen – what happens is the computer holds the engine at 4,500 rpm and waits for you to lift your left foot off the brake pedal.
When you do all hell breaks loose and the GT-R posts a 0-60mph that a Porsche Carrera GT cannot match, let alone a 911 Turbo.
And according to the road tester the surface was fairly low grip and produced a bit of wheelspin.
