Honda to build new engine plant in Ontario

Honda Canada Inc. will build a $154 million engine plant in Alliston, Ont., which will create 340 jobs, the automaker has announced.

The new plant is scheduled to open in 2008 and will be built near its two existing manufacturing facilities in the small town 90 kilometres northwest of Toronto, which has a population of about 10,000.

Alliston's two operations produce 390,000 vehicles each year. The new plant is expected to produce about 200,000 engines a year, supporting Honda Canada-built vehicles, the company said.

Parent company Honda Motor Co. announced further expansions plans, saying it would invest $640 million US to build a new plant in Japan and $400 million US to build another in the United States.

Honda hasn't yet decided where it will build its U.S. plant, which will produce 200,000 vehicles a year. Some analysts predict the company will build a second assembly plant in Alabama. Honda also has a plant in Ohio and Mexico.

Honda Canada is expected to hold a press conference Wednesday morning in Toronto, along with representatives of the federal and Ontario governments.

Honda sold 1.65 million units in North America last year and forecasts sales will reach 1.72 million units this year.

The company has annual North American production capacity of 1.4 million units with five plants, meaning it must import vehicles to meet North American demand.

Provincial government sources told The Canadian Press on Tuesday they haven't been anticipating new vehicle assembly plants since Toyota announced plans last year to build a new factory in Woodstock, Ont., in 2008.

Assembly employment in Canada has remained relatively stable in recent years at about 45,000 in Canada, while parts employment has grown from about 70,000 jobs to about 100,000 jobs, said Canadian automotive industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers.

He noted auto parts giant Linamar Corp. announced last week it will add 3,000 new jobs in Guelph, Ont., and spend $1.1 billion over the next five years as it develops a new research and development complex.

The Guelph expansion will add 1,000 more jobs than Toyota is contemplating with its Woodstock factory.

É pena não conseguirmos captivar mais investimentos destes para Portugal, em especial quando a GM está a ponderar seriamente fechar a sua fábrica na Azambuja...
