Ford F series loses title as top-selling vehicle in May
The Ford F-150 pickup truck in May was dethroned as America’s favorite vehicle for the first time in a month since 1991 -- by four sedans. According to preliminary sales figures released by automakers, Ford Motor Co. sold 42,973 F-series trucks in May. The Honda Civic and Accord along with the Toyota Corolla and Camry all topped the F series.

impressionante. Cai o ultimo "rei" americano, ultrapassado por 4 japoneses.
O TOyota Camry já costumava ser o sedan mais vendido nos EUA há muitos anos, só ficando atrás das tradicionais pick-ups e um ou outro SUV.
O facto de ter sido o CIvic o mais vendido também não deixa de surpreender, até porque está um/dois segmentos abaixo do Camry, e sendo os EUA, um carro pequeno vender assim...

Major automakers today reported hybrid models and fuel-sipping small cars were snapped up in May, while sales of trucks, SUVs and luxury vehicles mostly languished.
The top seller for the month was the Honda Civic, at 53,299 units.
For the first time, the Civic and Honda's Accord, as well as the Toyota Corolla and Camry, each outsold Ford Motor Co.'s F-Series pickups.

For May, Corolla sales totaled 52,826; Camry sales were 51,291; Accord sales were 43,728 and F-Series sales were 42,973, as reported by the automakers.
Ford Group Vice President of Marketing and Communications Jim Farley described the drop in pickup sales and boost in car sales as "a sign of the times," in a conference call with reporters, adding that it was a "significant development" for the industry.
General Motors Corp. reported the steepest drop in sales at 27.5 percent for May. The company earlier today said it would shutter four truck and SUV plants by 2010.
The Detroit-based carmaker said poor truck sales were not offset by a gain in demand for its crossover models and popular smaller cars such as the Malibu sedan and Chevrolet Aveo.
GM also said it lost 15,000 to 18,000 sales in May due to production slowdowns caused by the strike at American Axle Manufacturing Holdings Inc. That strike, which affected the flow of parts and caused several GM plants to shut down, ran from February 26 to May 22.
Overall, the automaker shipped 272,363 units in May, compared with 375,682 in the same month a year ago.
Chrysler LLC said its May sales of 148,747 units was a 25-percent dip from 199,393 vehicles in May 2007.
The Auburn Hills auto maker, which is attempting to lure consumers with a fixed gas-price guarantee, said sales of most models dipped. Those that did attract more buyers included the Jeep Patriot, Dodge Caliber and Chrysler Aspen.
"There is an unprecedented shift in the industry that is challenging, but we are determined to provide customers what they need and want," said Chrysler Vice Chairman and President Jim Press.
Chrysler also said its sales to daily rental fleets were down 40 percent in May.
Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. reported May sales were off 4.3 percent. The company sold 257,404 units for the month, compared with 269,023 in 2007.
Truck sales posted double-digit losses while fuel-efficient models like the Yaris and Corolla gained.
Sales for Toyota's Prius hybrid were off from 24,009 units a year ago to 15,011 vehicles in May -- but the drop was due to limited availability of the Prius, Toyota said.
Ford Motor Co. also reported strong demand for its hybrid offerings, telling analysts and reporters that production of the Escape and Mariner small SUVs could barely keep pace with demand.
Ford said overall May U.S. sales dropped 16 percent compared with the same month a year ago, despite stronger demand for smaller sedans like the Focus and Fusion.
The company delivered 217,998 units for the month, down from 259,470 a year ago.
Reflecting the industrywide large-vehicle malaise driven by high fuel prices, Ford said SUV sales were down 44 percent while trucks and vans were off 29 percent.
Sales to daily rental car fleets were down 30 percent. Ford, like its rivals, has been deliberately withdrawing from such sales.
The Dearborn-based automaker said sales of its Focus compact were up 53 percent compared with a year ago, while demand for the Fusion rose 27 percent.
"Our dealers are selling the Focus at unprecedented turn rates," said Jim Farley, Ford's group vice president for marketing and communications. "Our small and midsize cars are outperforming the industry, and we're only just beginning.
Sales of Ford's iconic F-series pickup trucks, however, were off 30 percent compared with a year ago.
Today Ford begins offering employee pricing to all customers on all F-Series trucks. The deal runs until June 30 and applies to F-150, F-250 and F-350 models.
"We've been 31 years running the leading vehicle in that segment," Farley said. "We see this as an important merchandising strategy."
Ford plans to introduce a new version of the F-150 this fall.
American Honda Motor Co. Inc. was among the few automakers reporting robust May gains.
Honda said it sold 167,997 units for the month -- up more than 15 percent from 145,367 a year ago.
Gainers included the Fit, Accord and Civic models, all of which posted double-digit sales gains.
"The dramatic increase in car sales appears to be one of the most profound shifts in automotive buying patterns in more than a decade," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda.

As vendas do Prius também tiveram um mês mau, mas parece que tem sido problema de abastecimento de unidades para o mercado.

O Focus 1 nunca vendeu tanto.
A Honda sobe em 15%, com 2 modelos no topo.
E no geral, a Ford viu as vendas das suas pick-ups e SUV's cairem 44%, o que é uma queda bastante grande, tendo o número de unidades que costumam vender

Não estou surpreendido. De certa forma é a resposta dos consumidores à subida do petróleo. Além disso, os americanos chegaram à conclusão que SUV's e Pickup's não são solução para nada. Sendo assim, cada vez mais se vai assistir à procura carros do segmento pequeno/médio, inclusive a Honda colocou novamente unidades em stock do Accord Hybrid (16 unidades vendidas em Maio). Com o lançamento do Fit no Outono e com a chegada de novos híbridos em 2009 as vendas vão subir ainda mais.

A única surpresa passa talvez pelo recorde de vendas do novo Acura TSX (4.564 unidades vendidas em Maio, aumento de 53,7%). O carro era criticado por não oferecer um V6 mas parece que não é isso que os consumidores procuram. Parabéns à Honda por ter apostado num plano a longo prazo que começa a dar frutos.

Por cá, pouca gente está disposta a retroceder 1 ou 2 segmentos... antes pelo contrário. Dificilmente o cliente de um Passat, por exemplo, comprará um Golf e muito menos um Polo (o mesmo se aplica a clientes de outras marcas)... e hibrido nem pensar!

The tide is finally turning with regards to America's embrace of large vehicles.

With gas prices approaching or already having surpassed the $4.00 a gallon mark in the U.S., many Americans are looking to ditch their gas-guzzling SUVs for smaller cars and crossover utility vehicles (CUVs).

Nowhere was this more prevalent than the month of May for U.S. car/truck sales. The Ford F-150 has been America's perennial best-selling vehicle for the past two decades. It's month-to-month sales streak, however, came to a screeching halt in May.

The F-Series was beaten in monthly sales by not one, but four cars: the Honda Civic (53,299), Toyota Corolla (52,826), Toyota Camry (51,291), and Honda Accord (43,728). The F-Series was next in line with 42,973 units sold. The F-Series last saw the tail lights of a car in monthly sales way back in October 1991.

Ford Group VP for Marketing and Communications Jim Farley said that that thumping from Honda and Toyota was a "significant development" and that "it's not surprising, given the fuel price."

"That's just a sign of the times. I think May has been a watershed month," added Farley.

Alan Mulally, Ford's CEO, went even further adding, "We really believe we are seeing a structural shift with the fuel prices going through the $3.40-to-$3.60" range. It's interesting that a lot of others are saying the same thing now."

So I think we're seeing a structural shift where, with the prices being high in the United States, we're seeing exactly what happened in Europe a number of years ago, where the customers are going to make economic decisions, and they're going to move toward smaller and medium-sized vehicles."

Ford isn't the only American company feeling the heat from rising fuel prices and waning interest in large trucks and SUVs. According to the Chicago Tribune, General Motors has plans to close four of its truck and SUV manufacturing facilities. In return, the company plans to bring online a new small car plant in Ohio for the year 2010.

"We at GM don't think this is a spike or a temporary shift," said GM CEO Rick Wagoner in response to the shift from large vehicles to smaller cars.

In addition, GM's macho "Hummer" brand may be sold off according to Wagoner. Wagoner noted that GM is "undertaking a strategic review of the Hummer brand, to determine its fit with GM's evolving product portfolio" and that it is "considering all options for the Hummer brand... everything from a complete revamp of the product lineup to partial or complete sale of the brand."

Even GM's new hybrid SUVs have failed to spark much interest from consumers despite the fact that they manage to crack the 20 MPG barrier. GM managed to only sell roughly 1,100 units combined of the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and GMC Yukon Hybrid through the first five months of 2008 -- this is well off the projected pace of 12,000 units for all of 2008.

Manufacturers with more nimble, car-based product lineups like Honda are laughing all the way to the bank with America's newfound interest in efficient vehicles.

"The dramatic increase in car sales appears to be one of the most profound shifts in automotive buying patterns in more than a decade," said American Honda Executive Vice President Dick Colliver.
