    2017 ● Chrysler Pacifica apresentada

If it's attention that Chrysler wanted, it sure got what it asked for with the most secretive concept model of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, the 700C minivan. And this despite the fact that the automaker didn't even issue a formal press release on its conceptual people carrier.

But all for good reason as Chrysler brand global boss Saad Chehab explained in an interview with Australian news site Drive at the Cobo Center.

Chebab told the website that Chrysler did not release any supporting information on the 700C because it "wanted unsolicited opinion about the car and its potential" from the motor show visitors. He also said that the 700C was a last minute addition to Chrysler's Detroit Motor Show booth.

“This is the first step we are taking into it to see what the feedback would be from customers, from the media, to see if this is something we might see in the future that maintains the useability of people-movers, but at the same time giving something more to the driver and the passenger next to them," Chebab explained.

We also learn that the 700C is based on the current Town & Country's running gear and that the designers' goal was to redefine the category not by reinventing its packaging features but rather the interior and exterior styling.

“It’s a styling exercise for us, looking at the future of mobility, of people-movers,” said Chebab. “What’s the Swiss Army knife of cars going to look like in the future? “It’s the first step into the future and we are asking people ‘what do you think?’... Is it stupid, beautiful, crazy…?”

And with that, Chebab gave us the idea for our poll, which you can vote on below right after you take a look at the comprehensive gallery that follows.

[Fotos espia] - Chrysler Town & Country (2017)

What It Is: You are looking at an exceptionally rough early prototype for the next-generation Chrysler Town & Country minivan. Even though it is covered from wheels to roof in baggy, plastic covers, key visible bits such as the headlights, taillights, grille, and some interior pieces hail from the far reaches of the Fiat/Chrysler spectrum, indicating that, along with the minivan body, this cobbled-together vehicle is one of Chrysler’s first 2017 T&C development mules. Why It Matters: Besides possessing one of the most historic names in the industry, the Town & Country, when it appears sometime in 2016, will carry Chrysler’s minivan torch alone. The van’s longtime sibling, theDodge Caravan, is to be killed that same year and replaced with a three-row crossover along the lines of GM’s mid-size Lambda-platform CUVs such as the Buick Enclave and the GMC Acadia.

Chrysler, too, will get a version of the new three-row crossover, meaning the T&C will need to fight for relevance in Chrysler showrooms. Apparently, Chrysler recognizes the future Town & Country’s significance, and, per the company’s most recent product-plan update, will give the van a plug-in-hybrid powertrain option. We hope it works; for as much as we poke fun at minivans’ mulish nature, the Town & Country is a direct descendent of the vehicle that spawned the modern minivan, and it’d be a shame to see the segment and its namesake wither.

        Platform:
Even though we know the Town & Country will survive for another generation, the minivan isn’t far enough along in the development process for even these spy photos to give us a clear idea of what architecture it will use. Our spy photographers managed to capture the prototype while it sat near a current-generation Dodge Grand Caravan, and it’s roughly the same size, albeit with a lower, tapering roof. The floor appears lower, which might mean that Chrysler is abandoning its second-row, fold-into-the-floor Stow ’n Go seating this time around.
While it is possible Chrysler could recycle the current T&C’s platform for the 2017 model, we expect that the company will drum up a new, lighter structure for it. It’s fairly likely the new minivan will use bits and pieces from the aforementioned three-row crossovers due out around the same time. Based on this test mule’s basic profile, it looks as though Chrysler will try to imbue the minivan with at least a semi-crossover-y look; the roofline tapers into a steeply raked rear window, and the front end is less bulky than most minivans’ mugs, too. It may retain its sliding doors, but Chrysler is clearly aiming to make this thing stylish.
As for the rest of the prototype, well, it’s less an all-new vehicle than an assemblage of contemporary Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, and Ram pieces. The headlights and grille appear cribbed from the Chrysler 200, while the taillights look to be Dodge Durango units. The door mirrors are from theDodge Challenger, and the interior features a Dodge steering wheel and digital gauge cluster.

        Powertrain:
Just as it’s too early to surmise what platform will underpin the new Town & Country, it’s rather too soon to tell what will power it. That said, Chrysler has confirmed that the van will get a plug-in-hybrid powertrain. But there currently isn’t an equivalent setup anywhere in the U.S.-market Fiat/Chrysler lineup, so details are elusive. If Chrysler can keep the minivan’s weight down, we could see a four-cylinder engine—possibly turbocharged—paired with an electric motor or motors.
Alternatively, a hybridized version of Chrysler’s excellent Pentastar V-6 would fit nicely. We anticipate that some version of the Pentastar six also will serve as the van’s nonhybrid means of motivation. Front-drive will be standard, while all-wheel drive likely will be available as an option—something the current minivan does not offer due to the space eaten by the Stow ’n Go seats. The ZF-sourced nine-speed automatic from the Chrysler 200 and Jeep Cherokee probably will be the only transmission choice.

Competition: Honda Odyssey, Kia Sedona, Nissan Quest, Toyota Sienna.
Estimated Arrival and Price: Per Chrysler’s stated future product plans, the new Town & Country will debut sometime in 2016 before going on sale as a 2017 model-year offering. It’s far too early to speculate about pricing; given the Dodge Grand Caravan’s departure and Chrysler’s sometimes-upscale ambitions, the T&C could be positioned as a more luxurious option than it is today, or it could be offered at the same $30,000-ish base price as most of its minivan competitors.

              Automotive News
DETROIT -- Fiat Chrysler plans to abandon the bottom end of its minivan lineup next year as the redesigned 2017 Chrysler Town & Country replaces the existing model and the Dodge Grand Caravan.

That means that Fiat Chrysler's sub-$25,000 minivan -- the Grand Caravan's American Value Package starts at $22,390, including shipping -- will disappear.

Instead, the redesigned Town & Country will start around $26,000 and climb to $45,000 and up, depending on features, Chrysler brand head Al Gardner told Automotive News.

"The reality is that the [American Value Package] is a very difficult price point to get if you're going to build the technology, the content, the vehicle, the platform that we want to build," Gardner said.

"At some point, those customers are wonderful customers for us, and we would love to be able to sell them something, but it may not be a Town & Country, if we look at the segment," he said. "That price point is really hard to do, and none of the competition can do it either."

Fiat Chrysler plans to interrupt production at the Windsor Assembly plant in Ontario for about three months beginning in mid-February to prepare to build the next-generation Town & Country.

Gardner said the redesigned Town & Country will start in price “down where the segment is” at about $26,000.

He added: "What we do very well today with the Town & Country is effectively $30,000 and above, and we can run content-appropriate pricing all the way up to, call it $40,000. That's where the segment peaks.

"The volume is minimal when you crack $45,000. But we do know that, if you're going to be Chrysler, you have to be competitive in the segment. You have to run $26,000 all the way to $40,000 plus."
