Ford Fiesta plant to build new 'mini Mustang Mach-e' electric car from 2023

New all-electric Ford 'mini Mustang Mach-e' will be built on the VW Group’s MEB platform at the Fiesta’s home in Cologne

Ford has confirmed that its next electric car will arrive in just two years and it's set to be built at a redeveloped Cologne manufacturing plant. The factory will become the Ford Cologne Electrification Centre - a dedicated electric car manufacturing site that will produce two Ford EVs developed specifically for the European market.
The first vehicle to be built at the new Cologne site will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric car platform, following the announcement in 2019 that Ford had signed a deal to use VW’s tech. It’s likely to take the form of a small SUV, incorporating design inspiration from the brand’s new all-electric performance SUV - the Mustang Mach-E - and becoming the third member in a growing Mustang family.

The first MEB car launched was the Volkswagen ID.3 and the new Ford is expected to be similar in proportions to that car, but with a more crossover-like body style. That’s the route Ford went down with the new Mustang Mach-E and it’s expected that Ford will take a similar approach with the new ‘Mini-mustang’, previewed in our exclusive images.
VW’s ID.3 is 4,261mm long, putting it in between Ford’s Fiesta and Focus in size and very close to the 4,186mm long Puma SUV. Although the platform is modular and can be extended or shortened with different battery options, it’s expected that Ford’s new EV will be similar in size, allowing clear space between it and the 4,713mm long Mustang Mach-E. However, interior space of the ‘Mini Mustang’ is likely to be in excess of that in the Focus and closer to that in the Mondeo.
Using the VW Group’s MEB skateboard platform for their new EV means Ford will also have to use the same battery technology – which is likely to mean a choice of 58kWh batteries with power outputs of 201bhp or 143bhp or a 77kWh battery also with 201bhp, but with a longer range. To be competitive with other MEB models and their rivals, the baby Ford EV would have to offer between 250 and 350 mile of range. Fast charging will also be offered with an 80 per cent charge expected in a little over half an hour.

Auto Express revealed in late 2019 that Mustang design influences were likely for the smaller EV, when Ford of Europe’s chief designer Murat Gueler told us: “The Mustang influence wasn’t considered until an earlier direction with the car wasn’t really working. Once we introduced Mustang as inspiration, it came together quickly. We’re really excited by what this brings to the electric car, and yes we have already talked about expansion, to some sort of family.”
Gueler also confirmed that the new car would have a different profile to the Mach-E, but that it would almost certainly be a crossover.
When the new EV arrives in 2023, we would expect it to be positioned below the Mustang Mach-E, meaning a price range from under £30,000 to just over £40,000.
Ford now says that it is already considering the potential for Cologne to be the manufacturing site for two electric vehicles, raising the possibility of another MEB platformed car being built there.

VW-Underpinned Mini-Ford Mustang Mach-E Reportedly Coming To Europe In 2023

It will apparently be built at Ford’s Cologne plant where the Fiesta city car is currently built.

Ford gambled when it gave its first electric crossover Mustang design cues, but it seems to have been a gamble that has paid off. Sure, there are still those who don’t agree with the decision, but the majority of people seem to like it, and in two years’ time, they will apparently be able to buy a smaller interpretation of the same formula, underpinned by a VW group platform.
AutoExpress sheds more light on Ford’s recently announced electrification plans for Europe. The Blue Oval has officially announced that it will buy 600,000 MEB platforms from Volkswagen over a period of six years starting in 2023. It also confirmed that the vehicles it will underpin with these platforms will be assembled at its plant in Cologne, which the manufacturer wants to turn into a hub for electrification.

According to the source article, at least some of the 600,000 MEBs purchased from VW will be used to underpin what AutoExpress describes as a mini-Mach-E. Basically a smaller version of the Mach-E crossover that we’ve already seen, although it will be more mechanically similar to a VW ID.3 and ID.4 than to the actual Mach-E.

The sub-Mach-E crossover will be about the same size as a Ford Focus, but as we’ve seen with other MEB-underpinned cars, interior room will be closer to that of cars from a class above. We don’t currently know any specifics, but the mini-Mach-E will probably use the same batteries and motors already used by its VW group stablemates (58 or 77 kWh battery packs and power outputs between 143 and 201 horsepower for standard models).

And this Mustang-inspired model may not be the only EV to come out of Cologne within the next few years. With the order for 600,000 platforms, there is a good chance that not all of them will be used for the same model - Ford may choose to build more than one MEB-underpinned pure-EV at its Cologne site.
The source article also features a 2019 quote from Ford’s design boss for Europe, Murat Gueler, who said
The Mustang influence wasn’t considered until an earlier direction with the car wasn’t really working. Once we introduced Mustang as inspiration, it came together quickly. We’re really excited by what this brings to the electric car, and yes we have already talked about expansion, to some sort of family.

Ford Will Sell Only Electric Passenger Cars In Europe From 2030

ommercial vehicles will be either plug-in hybrids or EVs by then.

Ford is intensifying its electrification efforts in Europe where it plans to discontinue the combustion engine from its passenger car lineup in the next nine years. Yes, the Blue Oval will only sell zero-emissions cars from 2030, meaning traditional models such as the Fiesta and Focus will lose their gasoline engines.
The first step towards a purely electric passenger car lineup is to electrify the entire portfolio by the middle of 2026. In other words, Ford will only sell plug-in hybrids and EVs in five years from now, before discontinuing the ICE altogether four years later. The electrification process has already started with the Mustang Mach-E and plenty of hybrids, be them mild hybrids or PHEVs.

There are similar plans for commercial vehicles, but going entirely electric will take more time. By 2030, Ford estimates two-thirds of its commercial vehicle sales will be represented by plug-in hybrids and EVs. By 2024, the likes of the Transit and Tourneo will be offered with all-electric or plug-in hybrid powertrains alongside traditional engines.
In order to achieve its ambitious eco-friendly targets, Ford will be investing $1 billion in its assembly plant in Cologne, Germany to prepare it for EV production. It’ll be dubbed as the “Ford Cologne Electrification Center” and will kick off production of an unnamed volume electric passenger car for the European market from 2023. A second EV is already being considered for the same factory.

With the plan to turn all passenger cars sold in Europe into EVs by the end of the decade, it effectively means the next-gen Fiesta and Focus coming in the next few years will be the last to offer a combustion engine. The Mondeo is expected to morph later this year into a high-riding wagon with a hybrid powertrain, and an eventual second generation would lose the ICE.
Ford still makes the EcoSport alongside the Puma at its Romanian plant, but only the latter has been electrified by offering a mild-hybrid powertrain. Of the two small crossovers, the Puma seems to have a brighter future up ahead and has bigger chances of being around in 2030 when the company will pull the plug on traditional engines.
