                          Skoda-backed teams announced

Red Bull SkodaAs predicted on wrc.com, Skoda Auto has confirmed its support for two privateer teams which will field Fabia WRCs in the 2006 World Rally Championship - a two-car, Red Bull-backed, Austrian team and a single-car effort for Czech youngster Jan Kopecky. Citroen refugee Francois Duval is still a possible driver.

The Red Bull team will be run from Austria by the Baumschlager Rally and Racing Team, run by Raimund Baumschlager. It has already confirmed 21-year-old Austrian rising star Andreas Aigner as one of its drivers. Rally Australia winner Duval is tipped to drive the other, though as yet the official word is just that a driver with international experience will be confirmed soon. This team will contest 10 rounds in the 'Manufacturer 2' category which allows officially-backed teams to contest the WRC without entering all 16 rounds.

The Czech-based team will field one car for Kopecky on 10 European rounds of the WRC. Both squads will receive extensive technical support from Skoda Auto including a parts package and provision of factory engineers on events.

Skoda's support of these programmes is designed to maintain a presence in the WRC and leaves the door open to a full-time return to the WRC in the future. Detlef Wittig, chairman of the board of directors of Skoda Auto commented: "We have given our future participation in the World Rally Championship a lot of serious thought and we believe that this is the most cost-effective way in which to maintain the Skoda brand's presence in the series. I am confident that both partners will be excellent ambassadors for Skoda Auto in the coming season"

Harald Ludanek, director of research and development, added: "Skoda Auto will continue to observe the development of the championship and its regulations and will decide at some point in the future whether or not we will one day return as a factory team."

                                  O C4 está lindo. Parece-me excessivamente baixo.

As provas a fazerem paridade são: Monte Carlo e Suécia, Espanha e França, Itália e Grécia, Alemanha e Finlândia, Austrália e Nova Zelândia.

Philippe Bugalski tests the new C4 WRC
Exclusive interview with Citroën test driver

Bugalski pleased with initial C4 test
Since 2003, Philippe Bugalski has been the official test driver for Citroen Sport. Earlier this week, the Frenchman had the opportunity to test the C4 WRC, the car that will be used by Citroen when they return to the World Rally Championship in 2007.

Citroen Sport decided to conduct the C4 WRC's first asphalt test in southern France, on a road between Col de Gratteloup and Roquebrune. Testing started on Tuesday and lasted three days. Bugalski covered more than three hundred kilometres on a dry surface.

The former French Champion gave us his first impressions : “We covered over three hundred kilometres without experiencing any problem, which is a very good point. I was at ease with the car very quickly. That's very important because it is difficult to make progress with a car when we don't have this positive feeling.”

“We tested the C4 WRC on different types of asphalt and the impressions were the same,” added Bugalski. “It's an extremely reliable, confidence-inspiring car and fun to drive. It's a successful start, that's for sure!”

Citroen Sport have achieved their goals for this first test on asphalt: “This test was mostly to do some mileage. To do a lot of distance and get as much data as possible for the team's engineers, that was the priority for these first two days of testing,” explained Bugalski.

After being involved for three years in the development of the Xsara WRC, Philippe doesn't want to make comparisons with the C4 WRC, at least not for now: “It's too early to compare the Xsara and C4. We should know very soon if the C4 is different from the Xsara, faster or slower. For now it is too early to say,” concluded the Citroen Sport test driver.

Philippe Bugalski was replaced on Thursday by Sebastien Loeb, who took over behind the wheel of the C4 WRC for the third day of testing.

                                            Solberg: '2006 will be hard'

Petter Solberg expects to have a real fight on his hands in 2006 as he tries to regain the World Championship title which he first won in 2003. The Norwegian Subaru star reckons that his battles with fellow champions Sebastien Loeb and Marcus Gronholm will be as tough as ever.

Solberg is the only one of rallying's big three who will have no team changes to cope with in 2006 as Gronholm makes the big switch from Peugeot 307 to Ford Focus and Loeb moves from a factory Citroen Xsara to one run by Kronos Racing.

"I think the championship will be harder than ever," Solberg told wrc.com. "It will be a very interesting season. To say that Sebastien Loeb is not in a factory car is bullshit. Guy Frequelin is still there, you know, engineers, mechanics, full-spec Michelin tyres, everything. And obviously Marcus will be very tough too."

Solberg is nonetheless far from pessimistic about his chances. He has already tested his 2006 mount and will do so again at the end of this week, but he is reluctant to reveal too much of his first impression. "We have a good feeling," he said, "but that's the only thing I can tell you."

                                                2006 entry list released

WRC driversWorld motorsport's governing body - the FIA - has confirmed the entry list for the 2006 World Rally Championship, with a total of six teams eligible to bid for the manufacturers' title under new regulations introduced for next season to allow privately-funded outfits to compete with factory-backed teams.

French manufacturers Citroen and Peugeot, Czech car firm Skoda and Japanese motor giant Mitsubishi have all pulled out of the WRC for next season, but a number of privateer outfits have stepped in to fill the breach. Under new Manufacturer 2 rules for 2006, they are eligible to fight with the remaining works teams from Subaru and Ford for the official makes' title.

Belgian outfit Kronos Racing will run a pair of Citroen Xsara WRCs backed by fuel company Total, while the French firm prepares for its return as a fully-feldged manufacturer in 2007 with a new car - the C4 WRC. Double champion Sebastien Loeb will lead the line-up, with Spaniard Xavier Pons nominated as the second driver for the season-opener in Monte Carlo. Reigning Junior WRC title holder Dani Sordo is also scheduled to drive a car on up to eight rallies next year.

Bozian Racing have linked up with German fuel company OMV to run a pair of Peugeot 307s on 12 rounds of the schedule, with Henning Solberg and Manfred Stohl taking the two seats. Energy drinks firm Red Bull will back a Skoda Fabia WRC team to be run by rally preparation ace Raimund Baumschlager, with Austrian hotshot Andreas Aigner taking one seat and a top international driver - rumoured to be former Ford and Citroen driver Francois Duval - taking the other.

Works Ford outfit M-Sport has also confirmed that it will run a B-team, although it has yet to name any of its drivers. Rising British star Matthew Wilson and Finn Kosti Katijamaki - a protégé of works Ford signing Marcus Gronholm - have both been among those linked to driving roles in recent weeks.

Several other privateer teams look set to bolster the registered manufacturers' entrants on selected rounds of the WRC next year. ORECA and PH Sport have both been linked to deals to run Citroen Xsara WRCs, while Czech star Jan Kopecky will drive a privately-run Skoda Fabia WRC. Former Ford driver Toni Gardemeister has already announced he will drive a privateer Peugeot 307 WRC, run by the Astra Racing team, on the Monte Carlo season-opener as he looks for a full-time seat for next year.

                                                  Loeb beats F1 champ

Sebastien Loeb - CitroenSebastien Loeb has been named as motorsport's top driver of 2005 by the respected British magazine Autosport. The Citroen ace was rated above new Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso and all the other grand prix stars, as well as drivers from a variety of other motorsport disciplines.

Loeb's dominance in the 2005 World Rally Championship, in which he won an unprecedented 10 rallies, brought Loeb this accolade, though he admitted to the magazine that he believes his records will mean more to him in the future than they do now. One record he is interested in is Carlos Sainz's total of 26 wins. "That record is interesting to me," he said, and he doesn't rule out reaching it in 2006. His current tally is 20.

Five rally drivers made it onto the list. Loeb was joined in the hall of fame by Petter Solberg, who dropped four places from his 2004 ranking to appear at number eight; Marcus Gronholm, who was up five at number 14; Junior World Rally Champion Dani Sordo - a new entry at number 36; and comeback man Colin McRae, who was a re-entry to the list at number 43.
