I’ve just spent an engaging half-hour in the company of Gayu Eusegi, Mitsubishi’s global product director.

Mostly we talked about the new Global Small Concept, which will be built in Thailand and sized somewhere between a Toyota Aygo and the Colt supermini. It’ll go on UK sale in 2012, effectively replacing the Colt in the line-up.



But also he told me some news, which seemed to surprise a few Mitsubishi Europe bods as much as it did me.

The Lancer Evolution X, Eusegi told me, will be the last Evo. “There is still a demand [for the car],” he said, “but we must stop.” Eyebrow up.

“Our influence now is EV technology,” Eusegi said, adding that the decision was a “policy change”.

It seems Mitsubishi, which is going to introduce eight full electric or hybrid cars by 2015, has decided its image is about lowering CO2, not making lurid replicas of rally cars that don’t go top-level rallying any more.

Eusegi said that customers would find it “easier to understand” what Mitsubishi was about if it was no longer in this motorsport-inspired market.

He seemed to put the rumoured diesel hybrid Evo replacement to bed, too. So the X will be the last Evolution model? “Yes. Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles,” said Eusegi. “Maybe then we can enter the market again.”

Until then, prepare yourselves for the end of an era.

Será que dão prejuízo? o que entendem por prejuízo? o carro em sim até pode dar, mas se atraves dele conseguirem publicidade gratuita, credibilidade, paixão, vontade de querer ter pelo menos um semelhante,..., no final de contas acho que que podem sair a ganhar!

Actualmente os consumidores já não vão muito nessas cantigas... o que realmente interessa é a qualidade dos produtos nos segmentos que vendem mais.

Se calhar tocaste no ponto, o problema não são os carros que dão prejuízo, é a falta de qualidade, se eu tiver uma gama de qualidade e tiver uma mostra do melhor que há, o pessoal talvez pensasse menos vezes na altura de se associar a minha marca.

E podemos ver isso com a Porsche durante toda a sua vida ganhou credibilidade e acima de tudo uma imagem de marca, agora faz modelos que a descaracterizam um pouco, mas que lhe dão lucro porque vendem a custa da tal imagem de marca que ganhou a custa dos seus desportivos!

Não sei até que ponto as vendas ao público do Evo e do STI são importantes. São carros feitos para competir no agrupamento de produção dos rallys. Parece-me que é um daqueles casos em que as vendas ao público vêm por acréscimo.

Acho que é apenas mais um rumor.. Há uns tempos atrás também se dizia que o próximo Evo ia ser a Diesel + Electrico.

quero ver a antiga luta subaru vs mitsubishi como era antigamente, sedans ( e nao hatch como o subaru de agora) de altas performances a discutir curva a curva a coroa do grip. E os rallys nunca mais foram os mesmos sem estes dois. Choremos irmaos

Eu ainda era um puto, mas tenho ideia que estamos a passar (com contornos um pouco diferentes) uma situação idêntica à que se passou no final dos anos 70 início dos anos ´80...ou seja, produtos muito racionais para enfrentar uma conjuntura muito adversa, que não deixa margem para grandes extravagâncias (tirando poucas excepções). Os construtores japoneses são, normalmente, quem percebe muito rapidamente como reagir a esta situação, no fundo adaptar a sua oferta doméstica ao resto do mundo
