    Suzuki GSX-R1000 [Video inside]

'Zero to 60 takes under three seconds'

'You can ride the wheels off the GSX-R and it feels safe'

'It'll make over 160bhp through its 190-section rear Bridgestone'

'How does 116mph in first gear sound?'

    «It's your choice, a 59bhp Ford Ka or a 160bhp Suzuki GSX-R1000. 96mph vs 186mph. Bring on the Gixer

Until recently the evolution of road-going 1,000cc superbikes has been developing very nicely indeed.

Each year one or more of the big four Japanese factories delivers a nice new version of their latest and greatest rocketship to play with, and each time they get slightly more powerful, lighter and even easier to handle.

Well, Suzuki has just upset the apple cart with its new GSX-R1000. It hasn't just raised the bar slightly; it's taken it and battered the competition over the head with it.

It's the biggest step forward in superbike development since the iconic 1992 Honda FireBlade, 1998 Yamaha R1 and Suzuki's own original 2001 GSX-R1000.

Let's talk power figures first. Stick this fuel-injected 999cc in-line-four cylinder GSX-R1000 on a dyno, and it'll make over 160bhp through its 190-section rear Bridgestone. And it gets better; it's the lightest of all these re-breathing superbikes too, weighing in at just 166kg.

All this adds up to fierce acceleration, and a simply staggering, huge top speed. You want figures? How does 116mph in first gear sound?

What about 156mph in third? And will a speed-limited 186mph in fifth and sixth gear do you? Zero to 60 takes under three seconds and the ton is reached in five. Best of all, it's the cheapest in its class, so you can have all this for £8,799!

The Suzuki rolls on a brilliant chassis featuring the latest spec suspension, which is set-up to perfection straight out of the box. You can ride the wheels off the GSX-R1000 and it feels safe, and if you do start to push too close to the limit, it'll warn you in plenty of time.

There's also a device in the engine known as a 'slipper clutch', which lets the clutch slip as you change down gears approaching a corner. It keeps the bike more stable, and lets you ride faster.

It's doubtful Suzuki's rivals will thank them for the GSX-R1000. It means they've all got to raise their game and make something even more special.» TOPGEAR
