"French rallyman Mark Champeau was killed during a reconnaissance test on the route of a special stage for the 1999 Rallye du Mont-Blanc, in Haute-Savoie region, France. On Monday, 30 August 1999 he lost control of his Subaru Impreza WRC and crashed into a lorry, being killed upon impact. His codriver Gilles Thimonier escaped the accident without major injuries.
At the time of the accident Champeau who was considered a rising star of French rallying scene, was second in points in the national Rally Championship, behind Philippe Bugalski. In 1998 he was 4th in the series, at the wheel of a Renault Mégane. Champeau's achievements include wins at the Rallye Grasse Alpin and another rally in Brive in 1997, racing for team France Espoirs. He was also second at Rallye d'Alsace in 1998 and at the Rallye du Rouergue one year later. Champeau had made his racing debut as a co-driver in 1993 before moving behind the steering wheel one year later."
