(...)Roger Angel, a University of Arizona boffin in the field of astronomical adaptive optics, has been looking at ways to cool the Earth in just such an emergency. Chiefly, he's been studying the practicality of deploying shade devices in space to shield the Earth from the Sun's radiation. NASA thought the idea had potential and funded him six months ago to develop the concept further. Now, his first paper on the idea has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.(...)

(...)This phenomenon is also observed during volcanic eruptions. Crutzen uses the Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1991 as a model for his idea . The volcanic eruption injected sulfur into the stratosphere. The enhanced reflection of solar radiation to space by the particles cooled the earth's surface by an average of 0.5OC in the year following the eruption.(...)
