Depois de dados mais concretos sobre o sucessor do Mx5, notícias a confirmar um sucessor para a única criatura da indústria automóvel que recorre a um Wankel.

Só que não teremos um sucessor directo do Rx8, mas sim do ... Rx7.
ou seja... voltamos à fórmula de criatura mais hardcore, o que é simpatico

De momento só há uns sketches completamente distintos
um mais "futurista", muito precoce

As novidades começam na mecânica com uma evolução do Renesis, o denominado para já de 16X. Será maior que o Renesis, mas mais eficiente e limpo.
Para passar as normas EuroV parece que recorrerá a sobrealimentação, mas com um twist, com accionamento eléctrico do compressor ou turbos (ainda não apanhei informação mais concreta sobre o tipo de sobrealimentação).

Estima-se que a potência será algo a rondar os 300cv e o peso deverá andar pelos 1250kg.
A estratégia é a mesma usada para o Mx5, ao centrar as massas entre os eixos e ter um peso o mais comedido possivel.
O Rx9, partilhará com o futuro Mx5 muitos componentes ao nivel do chassis.

Se fôr tão bom como o último Rx7, teremos algo pelo que ansiar

Pessoalmente um Rx7 é "demasiado" para o dia a dia. Sempre gostei do Rx8 e pelos preços praticados cá andam "dados", mas custos de combustível e manutenção cara deixaram esse hipótese de lado. De facto têm de melhorar a eficiência do mesmo ou encontrar uma alternativa (híbrido).

Também concordo que não deveriam abandonar o rx8.
Talvez haja planos para 2 modelos com motor Wankel.

Word from deep inside Mazda's Hiroshima HQ is that development of its much-rumored, rotary-powered RX-9 is well underway. But as one source told us, the company has put the lion's share of its recent R&D efforts into its new SkyActiv engines and transmissions and the next-generation MX-5, hampering the RX-9's progress.

"We want to take the RX-9 to the next level but just can't find the man-hours to do it," says our insider. "We have a guideline. We know what we have to do. But as we must give priority to the next-gen MX-5, we only have a small band of guys working on the RX-9."

The image you see here is one artist's impression of what the next-gen RX-9 will look like. Taking strong styling cues from Mazda's recent Shinari concept car, the RX-9 is expected to receive some of the most flowing, fluid lines and edges ever given a Mazda sports car.

Unlike the outgoing RX-8, with its complicated rear-door setup, the RX-9 will be a coupe. This means it will be more of an RX-7 for the 21st century, but with a twist. That twist will reportedly be in the form of hybrid technology Mazda will borrow from Toyota, thanks in part to an agreement the automakers signed last year. Apparently Mazda will only use Toyota's hybrid drive unit, with the main power coming from the Mazda-built rotary. The hybrid unit will reportedly be used primarily as a power booster and range extender.

Our confidant inside Hiroshima tells us that there is no point in doing with a rotary what a current gasoline engine can do, hence the move to a hybrid-assisted setup. "If that was the case, we could pop a rotary into a compact lightweight car tomorrow. But there's no merit in that. There'd be no reason to continue using a rotary."

Just then, our source changed tracks and mentioned platforms. "Do you know why the MX-5 grew so much in size? Because we had to drop it onto the RX-8 platform, as both cars employ the same platform." And now, roles have been reversed. The next MX-5 will land in showrooms long before the next rotary-powered car, which will incorporate the MX-5's new platform, reportedly being downsized to dimensions that almost mirror the 1989 first-generation model.

"Smaller, lighter, cleaner, more fuel-efficient, and more fun to drive. That's where we want to take the next rotary car," says our source, who hinted at a late 2013 debut. And given the bad rap the RX-8 suffered -- fuel-guzzler, oil-guzzler, weak mid-range torque -- such a radical rotary rebirth is the only way to take Mazda's greatest legacy forward.

Praised for their unique design, smooth operation and trademark rotary engine note, it's an engine configuration that stood out from the competition and formed the bases for the legendary RX series of performance vehicles.

Today, there is void in the Hiroshima-based company performance line-up; the RX-8 has ceased production, leaving no other rotary powered option on their new car menu. All is not lost, as word has it that Mazda are readying a new chapter in Wankel propulsion, although fans will be in for a small wait due to it being earmarked as an 2017MY release.
While no test mules have been snapped to date wearing the next generation attire, one's collective mind does ponder about what shape the upcoming Japanese uber-coupe will take. With that in mind, I thought it would be a great opportunity to draft up a conceptual proposal to gauge feedback as to which direction Mazda should head stylistically. (...)

Autohoje - Sucessor do Mazda RX-8 será resposta ao BMW i8

A marca nipónica poderá comercializar um híbrido plug-in com extensor de autonomia, que utiliza um motor rotativo.Primeiro foi o CEO da Mazda, Masamichi Kogai, a desmentir os rumores que a marca estaria a trabalhar num novo motor rotativo. Agora, segundo a What Car, a marca nipónica estará a trabalhar num sucessor do desportivo RX-8 (na imagem), que foi produzido entre 2003 e 2012.

Previsto para 2018, o modelo topo de gama, de tração traseira e de dois lugares, recorrerá a um sistema propulsor híbrido plug-in, contando com a potência de um motor elétrico e de um motor rotativo como extensor de autonomia.
