a Toyota falha muito neste aspecto que é não ter uma linguagem de design própria.
eu acho exactamente o contrário, a mania de meter a mesma frente/grelha na gama toda estraga por completo o design de qualquer marca

            Rumores sobre a motorização

Toyota has teamed up with BMW to develop a new sports car platform that will underpin a new Supra from the Japanese automaker and a replacement for the Z4 from the German side. BMW is thought to be doing most of the development work for the platform and engines that will power the cars, in return for hybrid and fuel cell technology from Toyota.

Citing an inside source at Toyota, Japanese magazine Holiday Auto (via Motoring) claims the new Supra will feature a complex hybrid system combining a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine sourced from BMW with a trio of electric motors. In similar fashion to Acura’s new NSX, the new Supra will feature an electric motor at each of the front wheels and a third electric motor integrated with the engine and transmission.

The setup was previewed in last year’s Yaris Hybrid-R concept and a beefier version is featured in Toyota’s TS040 Hybrid Le Mans prototype. Incredibly, the setup relies on a supercapacitor to store electrical energy and this is expected to feature in the new Supra. A charging port will allow owners to plug the car into an electrical outlet, making the new Supra a plug-in hybrid. Peak output of the system is expected to be more than 350 horsepower, which might not sound like much but you have to factor in that the target weight for the car is less than 3,086 pounds.

Despite a previous report claiming the BMW sports car will also get the technology, it’s now thought that the new Supra will be the only recipient. This makes sense in terms of vehicle differentiation: Toyota goes the all-wheel-drive, hybrid route for the new Supra, while BMW sticks with conventional powertrains (in-line four- and six-cylinder units) and rear-wheel drive for its Z4 replacement. Note, some suggest the Z4 replacement will be badged a Z5 to reflect its higher positioning in the BMW lineup and to leave room for a potential smaller roadster.

Both cars are expected to be revealed before 2017. Not much is known about the styling of the BMW, but for the Supra we can expect a look inspired by the lines ofthe FT-1 concept car unveiled earlier this year.

Upcoming Toyota Sports Car May Cost More than Chevrolet Corvette

On the heels of confirmation that the long-gestating BMW/Toyota joint sports-car project is still, well, gestating, we now have an idea of where the Toyota version will play in the sports-car segment.
According to information we’ve received from an inside source, the mid-size sports car—which Toyota is said to be discussing in terms of the FT-1 concept pictured above—is likely to cost more than a base Chevrolet Corvette, which currently starts at $54,995. If Toyota plans to play in the Corvette’s league, one should expect output in excess of 400 horsepower, likely from a turbocharged and/or possibly hybridized V-6. Rear-wheel drive is a given, but the car’s name—FT-1 or Supra or something else—remains to be seen.

And then there’s this interesting question: If the Toyota ends up costing more than a Vette, how much might the BMW version cost? If the Bimmer commands a premium, it may be too pricey to be a direct replacement for the Z4, as has been rumored. If the two cars are priced commensurately, they’ll need to be suitably differentiated for the existence of both to make sense, such as offering the Toyota only as a coupe and the BMW only as a convertible. And then there’s the tantalizing possibility that the BMW may wind up being both more expensive and more powerful—and maybe lean heavily on that brand’s newfound carbon-fiber expertise—which means we’d have a Jaguar F-type and Porsche 911 fighter on our hands.

Whatever the case may be, it sounds like these new sports cars will be more aspirational than affordable. We’re looking forward to finding out more—and hopefully soon.

Toyota S-FR Trademarked: Is This the New Supra?

Toyota has trademarked a new automobile title, hinting at a name for a future sports car. Toyota S-FR has now been protected with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and will be used for “automobiles and structural parts thereof.”

Following the naming structure introduced for FR-S, which stands for front-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car, the new name may stand for sports front-engined rear-wheel drive. We’re hoping that the ‘S’ stands for ‘super,’ which would make it a super front-engined rear-wheel drive car.
Toyota wants to have a three sports car lineup, consisting of one car that would sit above the FR-S and one that will sit below. The name could be used for either, though the larger of the two new cars is expected to arrive much sooner.

The high-end sports car will be a spiritual successor to the Supra and will take its styling cues from the Toyota FT-1 concept. It is currently being developed in cooperation with BMW.
The Toyota S-FR trademark application was filed on May 28, 2015.

Toyota poderá vir a apresentar no próximo ano um novo concept do Supra

What's got a sequential manual gearbox, is co-developed with BMW, features a turbo-hybrid powertrain and could step on Lexus' toes?

Why, the born-again Toyota Supra of course.

In a wide-ranging interview in Tokyo overnight with a group of Australian journalists, Toyota's chief engineer for sports vehicle management (read: the bloke in charge of sports cars), Tetsuya Tada, said the upcoming hybrid flagship sports car will exceed expectations.

When motoring.com.au asked if another concept car would precede the production model, Tada-san responded: "Of course. We already prepare [a concept]. It's a surprise for next year."

It's not clear when the concept will drop, but the Detroit show in January is likely.

When the production version eventually appears, Tada insists it will not only be special, but worth the drawn-out reveal campaign, which can be traced back as far as the 2008 FT-HS concept and most recently included the 2014 FT-1 concept.

"There are so many high-end sport cars available in the world with 700 horsepower [515kW] or more [that are] not so special anymore," he said.

"So we try to realise something new and a new surprise for customers. Nobody will expect or imagine the new technology," he said.

The man behind the Toyota 86, Tada confirmed one of new technologies the Supra will take advantage of.

"Of course we are now investigating some new technology, a sequential gearbox," he confirmed.

But just because it makes use of a motorsport transmission, don't expect the Supra to be a 500kW-plus beast.

"That kind of horsepower makes no sense for our car. Almost all customers are not like professional racing drivers. They just want to enjoy, to feel something fun," said Toyota's sports car engineering chief.

We've written before that the new 'Supra' is expected to pack a six-cylinder turbocharged hybrid powertrain worth around 350kW, and although Tada-san wouldn't confirm vital statistics nor even the type of powertrain, he did say it would outperform some of Germany's most famous sports cars.

Asked if the Toyota 86's 'big brother', as he calls it, would be better than a Porsche, Tada-san didn't hesitate: "Yeah, of course".

Likely to reprise the Supra name, which "has a long heritage of Toyota sports, therefore Supra has a really good image and direction," the Japanese giant's new-generation sports flagship is expected to be roughly the same size as a Porsche 911, and could take design cues from the FT-1 (pictured).

But therein lies the problem for Toyota.

By developing this flagship sports car with whiz-bang technology, loads of power, exceptional handling dynamics and striking looks, it could ruffle a few feathers over at sister brand Lexus.

"It's easy to imagine it could be close to Lexus. It's difficult to position it [without encroaching Lexus], yes," agreed Tada-san.

But stepping on the toes of cars like the Lexus RC F may be the least of Toyota's worries.

With Honda's new NSX hybrid supercar almost production ready and Mazda confirming it will jump back into the rotary coupe arena, Toyota's reborn Supra won't have it all its own way in the Japanese sports car market.
