The next-generation Mazda CX-9 will adopt the elongated hood, swept-back stance and narrow headlights of the Mazda6 sedan, recent spy photos show.Mazda has redesigned the 2017 three-row crossover with a new platform and powertrain, its first full overhaul since it was introduced for the 2007 model year. The new CX-9 is scheduled for debut in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show and will go on sale in the first quarter of 2016.
The images show that Mazda borrowed heavily from the design of the current Mazda6, which won design awards when it was introduced in 2013. Compared with its rivals, the Mazda6 has a long front overhang and hood, implying a powerful engine, and a cab-rearward design.
Mazda followed a similar strategy with the CX-9. While rivals such as the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander tend toward boxy, functional looks, Mazda has outfitted the CX-9 with a stretched hood and a gently sloping back end with a lip spoiler.
The CX-9's front fascia features the shield grille used across Mazda's lineup and significantly slimmer headlights than those of the outgoing model.
