A 400hp monster that you can drive to work or the track everyday. Leading into SEMA this year, Volkswagen put together a GTI Tuner Challenge and enlisted four aftermarket companies - APR, ABD, WRD and H&R - to build out GTI's to compete on the track, on the dyno and on build quality and detail (you'll be able to read all about the tuner challenge itself in EuroTuner, European Car and Sport Compact car in a few months). In the end Volkswagen chose APR's car below as the winner of the competition. APR's car put close to 385hp to the wheels (more than 400 crank horsepower) with a new forthcoming "big turbo" kit utilizing an APR-specific Garrett GT series turbo. We had a chance to drive APR's car just before it left for Las Vegas and can tell you that it is very, very quick yet drives and feels much like a factory tuned car - power is fantastic. mais
Golf R GTI
Volkswagen's U.S. design team takes the "R" concept a step further with the R GTI. With an APR "big turbo" kit bolted to the standard 2.0T engine this carbon fiber cloaked GTI put 355hp to the wheels (which really means the horsepower figure quoted below is just a bit underated) - YIKES!
Our Take: First, this car just doesn't photograph well. The overall design and concept looks mean as hell sitting on the show floor with deep black metallic paint, generous carbon fiber pieces and huge red rimmed wheels. While it might not look like it, the VW Design Center in California flared the front fenders approximately 20mm which enabled them to fit 265 wide tires underneath the front end. APR also did the engine tuning on the R GTI utilizing the same Stage 3 big-turbo kit found on their SEMA car but tuned for regular pump gas and good for 355hp to the wheels - or about 400hp at the crank. At the GTI Tuner Challenge Motor Trend was able to get the R GTI from 0-60 mph in about 4.8 seconds thanks to the extra wide rubber and a Quaiffe limited slip differential. The design team at VW also created the one-off wheels and to lower the stance and improve handling they installed an adjustable H&R coilover suspension. Making all that power come to halt required a set of Brembo brakes that were custom painted in a German-flag pattern. To make sure karma is on this R GTI's side, the design team hid a "FAST" in the front passenger side brake duct without telling anyone. Of course, leave to us to find it while we were crawling around on the ground looking to see if the front bumper brake ducts were actually functional (they are) however we hope the FAST is "fastened" properly for the ride! mais
Volkswagen thunder bunny
Volkswagen introduces a concept vehicle that reflects its roots in the sport compact tuning community.
The story began back in the early ‘80s, with a man named Bill Neumann. Bill founded the California based tuning firm Automotive Performance Systems (APS). He was frustrated with the fact that Volkswagen’s hot hatchback GTI had been sold in Germany since 1976, but hadn’t yet come to America. Bill had driven the GTI in Europe on several of his parts-searching trips, and he was convinced it would be a big hit in America. So he sent letters to the factory. He wrote to enthusiast magazines and lobbied Volkswagen dealers for support. Then, he put together the proof that a Rabbit-based performance car was capable of generating both stunning performance numbers and lots of attention from the American automotive press corp.
Thus was born the original Thunder Bunny. mais
VW GOlf GTI 30th aniversary versão UK
Volkswagen UK (so far) has announced a 30th Anniversary GTI for their market with an uprated 2.0T with 230hp mated to DSG.
Our take: We've known for quite some time that VW has been planning a 30th Anniversary GTI for the European market and a similar 25th Anniversary GTI for the U.S. market (yes, the U.S. market got the GTI five years later). VW UK has released two photos and a press release on the UK version of the 30th AE while VWAG has so far remained silent on the model - but we expect that to change. mais
