Lexus has formally unveiled in Geneva a new set of upgrades for their LFA supercar. The Nürburgring Package, first announced in March 2010, includes a series of improvements to the LFA to make it a more track-oriented car. Those who purchase the package also get 'Ring driving lessons, and a one year pass on the course.

This kit will not be available on all LFA units, as the company is only producing 50 packages. That means that only 10 percent of LFA owners will be able to purchase the upgrades, and it is not clear if the package can be retrofitted to first production year models.

Engineers tweaked the 4.8-liter V10 engine, boosting output by 10 hp (7.46 kW / 10 PS) to 562 hp (419 kW / 570 PS). Also upgraded is the six-speed sequential transmission, now capable of a 0.15-second gear change, a 0.05-second improvement. Included in the kit are several carbon fiber body pieces, including a fixed rear spoiler with fins, finned side spoilers, and a big front spoiler, as well as lightweight alloy wheels wrapped in racing tires.

All of the changes have lead to a 0-100 km/h sprint of 3.7 seconds, but the top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph) remains the same. The car also gets a 10mm drop in ride height, and a retuned suspension.

The Lexus LFA Nürburgring Package was announced as costing $70,000 (€50,939), but limits exterior paint choices to black, matte black, orange and white. European units will also get carbon fiber sport seats lined in Alcantara, as well as a carbon fiber center console and door inserts.

Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition faz 7:14 no 'Ring?

Some significant news broke today on Twitter — according to EVO writer Chris Harris & Lexus Europe, Lexus driver Akira Iida posted a 7:14 lap time of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a LFA Nürburgring Edition — good enough for either the fourth or fifth all-time fastest lap on the famed German track in a production vehicle (the exact time has yet to be announced). Even more impressive, regardless of milliseconds, this is the fastest lap ever by a mainstream manufacturer.

                                ...

Autocar põe as mãos no LFA Nürburgring Edition

                                What is it?
It is, of course, now de rigueur for almost every manufacturer to namecheck the Nürburgring when they’ve a new sports car to sell. But Lexus has more justification than most for doing so, because its LFA supercar has won its class in the Nürburgring 24 Hours three years running.

Which is all the excuse it needs to bequeath ‘Nürburgring Package’ upon 10 per cent of the 500 LFAs that it will build. Visually, said package includes a bigger front spoiler with added winglets, more effective side skirts and a fixed carbonfibre rear wing. Together, they help to produce a third more downforce than the standard car.

But with downforce comes drag, so the 4.8-litre V10 engine has been tickled up 11bhp to 562bhp to allow claimed performance to remain unchanged. Lowered suspension, track-day tyres, different wheels and a carbon and Alcantara interior complete the picture. All told, it adds £63,600 (nearly a 911) to the £339,500 list price of the standard car.

                                What’s it like?

No prizes for guessing where I drove it. A sighting lap in a standard LFA provided a useful reference point before climbing into the great orange beast and heading off around the Nordschleife to try my luck.

Much will come as no surprise to anyone who has followed the LFA’s fortunes of late.
It’s artillery shell quick in a straight line, makes Desert-Island-Disc-grade noise at 9000rpm and stops so fast it hurts. What the ’Ring package does most notably, apart from making the car an unspecified number of seconds quicker, is to make it easier to drive.

You notice the extra grip, but it’s mainly mechanical and down to the new suspension and tyres. The downforce is not the kind that lets you drive upside down; it just makes the car feel more settled on its springs, less tippy-toed into the ’Ring’s many fast, bumpy curves. The extra pace comes in part from the car but mainly from a driver made more confident to push it hard.

                                Should I buy one

Of course, the money is insane but, at this rate, only one or two will come to the UK. So if the price doesn’t matter and you want a car to make Veyrons look common, once you drive it, it’ll pretty much sell itself.

                                          First impression:
Almost beyond belief on the track, but for road users, the normal car is probably better.
                                          ...
Ultimately, this isn't a car for a hooligan. It's for someone who appreciates (and can pay for) the finer things in life — the sort of person who'll happily spend $10,000 on a Swiss chronograph knowing it hasn't a hope of keeping time as well as a bit of battery-powered junk costing 1,000 times less. It is a car for connoisseurs and collectors.
And they, we think, will love it forever.

Unlike most other halo models, proof of concept vehicles and supercars, the Lexus LFA does not make any compromises. It is a pure single-mission driving machine seemingly very content in its very own niche. With the exception of the ho-hum navigation unit, every ounce of carbon-fiber, every square inch of Alcantara and every drop of titanium alloy is contributing to that narrowly focused objective. It is a single-purpose stimulant, formulated specifically to induce euphoria in the driver. Masterfully executed, it is not a supercar - it is a narcotic.

SURPRISE! Lexus LFA Roadster makes appearance at drift event

Despite reports of its demise, a vehicle which appears to be the Lexus LFA Roadster has made a surprise appearance during the Tokyo Auto Salon today.

A previous report from Car magazine said Toyota decided to cancel development of the LFA Roadster due to the turbulent market conditions, and instead decided to focus energies on a new sports car program speculated to be a Supra revival.

During the D1GP Kick Off Drift event outside the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba, the LFA surprised the crowd doing a few brief drifts before coming to a rest.

Although, the highly excited MC almost drowns out the amazing sound of the V10 engine, we can hear just enough to know that the vehicle is a real LFA. Whether its an official Lexus prototype or a one-off custom job, we're not sure.

However, for better or for worse, there is a cumbersome looking roll bar just behind the head rests extending the width of the vehicle. This leads us to believe this is a privately owned custom job.

Certainly Toyota would have opted to use a cleaner setup with tensioned roll bars that suddenly shoot up in the case of a rollover. However, since this LFA was not structurally designed to be a convertible, the owner of this LFA sacrificed looks and used a solid roll bar instead to help give lateral stability to the structure without a roof.

                                                    What do you think?
