      Porsche 911 (1972-73) Part 3: 911 2.7 Carrera RS

      The 2.7-litre Carrera RS is generally regarded by Porsche enthusiasts as one of the German marque's most legendary automobiles. Originally intended as a homologation special to satisfy the FIA's Group 4 regulations that required a production run of 500 road cars, in the end, demand for this, the first RS-badged Porsche was so strong that over 1500 were eventually manufactured. It was introduced at the Paris Salon during October 1972 and went into production almost immediately, Porsche wanting to satisfy the FIA's production requirements as quickly as possible in order to be able to race their 2.8-litre RSR's during 1973.


      Technically made in four variations, the first to arrive was the RS H (H in reference to homologation) of which only seventeen were built and all in the earliest days of production. Quickly superseded by the 2.7 RS in either Sport or Touring specifications then, the fourth version, the 2.8 RSR, was built for Group 4 Appendix J competition and is covered seperately in Part 5. Meanwhile, Porsche's hot 2.7-litre Typ 911/83 engines were dropped almost straight in to what was more or less a stock F-series 911 S chassis, the 2687cc displacement having been achieved with a bore and stroke of 90mm x 70.4mm respectively (the former having been stretched from 84mm). Indeed, this bore increase was facilitated by the use of nickel-silicon carbide plating for the aluminium cylinders, more exotic construction throughout helping output up to 210bhp at 6300rpm, thirty horses more than the series production S with its 2.4-litre engine. Compression went unchanged at 8.5:1, as did the Bosch mechanical fuel injection and five-speed gearbox. However, weighing in markedly lighter than the XXXXkg 911 S, performance figures for both Sport (975kg) and Touring (1075kg) versions were outstanding. Posting zero to sixty acceleration times of 5.5 and 5.8 seconds, and with identical top speeds of 153mph, these RS-badged 911's could outperform even the most extravagantly engineered products from the rest of Europe. Meanwhile, it's also worth noting that, with those handful of very early 2.7 RS H's weighing in at just 960kg, 15kg lighter than the subsequent Sport which replaced it, this tiny run would have proved the quickest 2.7 Carrera's of all. Visually, the 2.7's largely retained what is generally considered to have been Porsche's definitive bodywork for the 911 although a couple of subtle but important developments were made.

      And whilst H, Sport and Touring versions may themselves appear to be extremely similar to one another, there were key differences between each of them. Having said that, all three came fitted with body panels that were considerably lighter than those used for the 2.4-litre production 911's built concurrently, thinner sheet steel being used for the front and rear wings, front lid and roof. Other universal upgrades included a new front spoiler with provision for a supplementary oil cooler, a distinctive new ducktail rear spoiler mounted on the engine lid and subtly flared wheelarches to accommodate wider Fuchs forged alloy wheels.


      Carrera decals applied between the wheels were generally fitted as standard although customers could opt for these to be deleted. RS H decals were only available in black but subsequent Sport and Touring 2.7's could be specified with either black, blue, red or green stickers along with colour coded wheel centres. More importantly though, Porsche's RS H and Sport versions were fitted with new lightweight engine lids and one-piece bumpers manufactured from glassfibre. They also got thinner Glaverbel glass which further reduced weight, as did adhesive Carrera RS decals on the engine cover. Touring spec RS', meanwhile, retained most of the lighter body panels but featured steel bumpers, its rear pieces coming directly from the 2.4-litre 911 S. But it was inside that the most obvious differences between the Touring version and other RS' could be found. Indeed, with their cabins stripped of all sound-deadening equipment, carpeting and the rear seats, RS H and Sport 2.7's were sold with a very basic level of trim. The electric windows were junked whilst thin felt carpeting and rubber mats were joined by lightweight Recaro bucket seats. The Touring, however, got a far more luxurious interior that was imported almost directly from the 911 S, but at the expense of almost 100kg. Porsche's original objectives for their Carrera RS had been a limited run of 500 cars to facilitate homologation for the 2.8 RSR into the FIA's Group 4 class. They were not, however, anticipating such an enthusiastic reception and soon found themselves producing a second batch of five hundred followed by a third just a few months later.

      Indeed, having built over a thousand 2.7-litre Carrera's, Porsche found themselves quickly satisfying homolgation requirements for Group 3 where the RS would also sweep the board. So with all possible production requirements met, RS production continued, but now alongside the 911 S, Porsche, from April 1973, beginning to use some of the series production 911's heavier steel body panels, the German marque almost exclusively manufacturing Touring versions for the last few months. Production ran for just eight months between November 1972 and July '73, during which time some 1580 examples were completed in Sport (Lightweight) and Touring configurations.

                                                              nitrofurano, eheheh... tiveste lá! dizes "não me estraguem o tópico", mas postaste o 914, que foi a maior aberração que a porsche e a VW conseguiram fazer. só encontro utilidade nesse modelo para colocar esse motor nos carochas ;)

                                                              mas olha, qual é que era o motor disto, visto seres a maior autoridade de porsche's aqui do fórum? acho que era o unico V8 da porsche, mas... fica ao teu critério o resto.
