                        AutoMotorundSport: Hypercars Hype

The first generation was at least partly the claim in the room, to set the benchmark: Porsche stood with the 918 Spyder the super test of sport car to prove that this car is the benchmark. Marc Lieb set a new unofficial lap record on the Nordschleife with a time of 6,57 minutes. McLaren also seemed to want to go the classic way of argumentation: For weeks practiced with the P1 on the Nordschleife, then there was a lengthy press release in November 2013, in which announced a new record, but the time was not mentioned.
Is it still about performance? Or just marketing?

Here was the first big crack in the credibility of the new hypercars. Was it really about performance? Or just marketing? Of course there were no "hard" tests with the 916 hp P1, only "soft" beautiful stories. As the Berliner used to say: "It crashes, it hisses, you can not see it." While Porsche at least seriously tried to demonstrate the efficiency and to support what was said with the awarding of test cars, the competitors refused to prove the suitability

                        LaFerrari

Ferrari and the LaFerrari are excused here, although the result is unfortunately the same: The Italians had it because of their unique status in the world of sports cars never needed to prove the performance of their super or hyper cars. It was the pure proclamation, so it was already the Enzo, the F50, the F40 - and also the 963 hp LaFerrari.

                        Mercedes-AMG Project One: Misaligned postponed

Mercedes and Aston Martin are the two brands that shoot the next bullets from the Hypercar revolver - albeit with some delay. Because in both prestige projects it creaks quite loud in the timbers. Mercedes presented the AMG Project One at the IAA in Frankfurt in 2017. Tenor: The F1 car for the road.
The launch was promised in 2019 - and now secretly postponed to 2021.
The reason: problems with the engine.

Valkyrie 1.0 licked, Valkyrie 2.0 too

This is also to be feared at Aston Martin: The Valkyrie project is under massive time pressure, the delays are already on several months. One reason: the car is being worked on at several corners - and not from a single source: Red Bull F1 design guru Adrian Newey draws the car. Which automatically means that the creators and translators have to iron out incredibly many things, because Newey has no idea of road cars or registration requirements. His trademark is his radicalism and his technical inflexibility, not his familiarity with crash test standards. Those Aston Martin associates who are familiar with the details of the Valkyrie project just roll their eyes: the list of issues is longer than the place for this story.

The first chassis was much too heavy, engineering partner Multimatic - who incidentally also contributed the chassis for the Mercedes-AMG Project One - had to put on a second version. The first version of the gas tank licked, the second as well. The wiring harness was not waterproof, the Bosch electronics were missing the connections for lighting and headlights.

Ford GT only for soft stories

We once had the same hope with the Ford GT. Although the Ford GT has no complex hybrid technology on board and is at 655 hp at most in the supercar area, he therefore does not play by definition in the Hypercar League. All the more startling is the statement by Ford Motor Europe's top product communicator at Le Mans in 2019: His two test cars were only available for "soft" stories, not for "hard" tests.

Ford GT: brake too hot, cars flared off

Who knows: Maybe it was just about the race car, maybe the road car is a waste product, which was "derived" with little effort. That might explain why "hard" tests were originally planned (we at sport auto had a fixed date in September 2018) but were then canceled. There were technical problems: At the WEC race in Spa, the rides had to be suspended with VIP guests as the brakes overheated. Last year, the car had to be recalled because of numerous fires: The hydraulic system for the high-flying rear wing was leaking, oil dripped on the exhaust, cars torched off.

Hypercars are supposed to shift the boundaries of dynamics. But they can not prove it. Maybe because they do not push the borders? The suspicion is obvious, because most hypercars must not be tested. Why are they ever built? High-priced limited special models are highly profitable, collectors pay themselves stupid and daft, regardless of how high-performance the cars are in truth.

The conclusion is sobering: With the exception of the Porsche 918 Spyder no hypercar has tried even to begin to prove performance in tests. Proclamation instead of legitimation, marketing instead of performance. Will that be better in the future? Anyone who has seen the last Hypercar projects at the Geneva Motor Show must doubt. These were electric fantasies with 2,000 hp and more. Maybe we should just settle for supercars - and just ignore the hype about the hypercars.

Porsche is plotting a new hypercar - and, what’s more, it could have a Formula One drivetrain.

The German manufacturer has reaffirmed plans to use a hybrid set-up sourced from the company’s aborted attempt to re-enter F1, potentially giving a 918 Spyder successor the green light. We’ve got all the gossip on the would-be Aston Martin Valkyrie slayer.
