New Mondeo blasts off
his week's mag has the proof that Ford is going for gold in the family car class! The sensational newcomer, set to replace the functional yet plain Mondeo in 2007, has hit the road. And Auto Express was first behind the wheel in a world exclusive drive.
Codenamed CD345, we didn't have to look for too long to realise that bland has been banned at Ford's design studio. The four-door model, which is currently badged Iosis, is the first to use the firm's new 'Kinetic Design' philosophy to be shared with models across Ford's range. Iosis, a word used by alchemists to describe the transformation of lead into gold, is a name that sums the car up perfectly. Revealed late last year, it was designed by Martin Smith, who also penned the Astra and forthcoming Corsa for arch rival Vauxhall.
Not only is the Iosis a bold step for Ford, but the production machine will also be a daring addition to the family car class, as it will blend swooping coupé lines with the practicality of a hatchback. Showcasing an all-new shape for the firm, the raised bonnet is Ford's answer to the latest pedestrian safety legislation.
With the gullwing doors wide open, clambering into the spacious interior for an exclusive drive at Ford's Essex test track is easy. As with the RX-8 from sister firm Mazda, there's no central pillar to block your access, so both front and rear seats are simple to get into.
The first thing to hit us was just how distinctive the orange trim finishing the cabin of our test car is - as are the wafer-thin seats. However, the dashboard gives the best sign of what the new Mondeo's

interior has in store. The design for the next-generation family model has already been completed, and Ford is keen to preview its new ideas.
The most controversial aspect of the interior is the central control system, which is similar in approach to Audi's MMI set-up and iDrive from BMW. The ultra-modern steering wheel is a neat touch, as is the sequential gearshifter, which was inspired by the lever found in the firm's Focus World Rally Car. Set high in the dash, it's crafted from solid aluminium and finished with orange leather. But best of all, it incorporates the engine starter button.
After giving it a quick press, the car's four-cylinder engine spins smoothly into life. Another set of buttons lowers the four doors, and with no central post, they slot together neatly.
Driving such an important prototype can be a nerve-racking experience - not so with the Iosis. According to insiders, it cost more to build than a Formula One car - and it shows. There are few metallic noises in the hand-made interior and no missing parts, either. The power-steering responds quickly and precisely to our inputs and the car is surprisingly stable once we get up and running.
The platform for the Iosis is shared with the firm's forthcoming S-MAX sporty people carrier, while the independent suspension is the same as the system used in the latest Focus.
We came away from our exclusive drive impressed, not only with the way the car looks, but also its spacious, practical interior and promising road manners. Ford's engineers can't work quickly enough to get the project finished!

Isto está difícil de perceber. Nos photoshop é parecido com o Iosis e espectacular. Mas nas fotos com a camuflagem não parece que vá ser assim. E aqui diz-se que não vais ser nada parecido com o Iosis...
