Here in the United States, heavily-polluting vehicles are hit with a gas-guzzler tax. In Paris, they may soon be banned outright. Parisian lawmakers are considering new regulations that would outlaw SUVs and other highly-polluting vehicles from entering the city limits.
On paper, the pending legislation may be aimed at reducing pollution, but it’s apparent that city officials also have their sites aimed at decreasing the number of large vehicles within the city limits, namely SUVs. Older vehicles with diesel powertrains may also be subject to penalty under the new law.
“I’m sorry, but having a sport utility vehicle in a city makes no sense,” deputy mayor of Paris Denis Baupin told RTL radio in France. “Sell it and buy a vehicle that’s compatible with city life,” said Baupin to owners of incompatible vehicles.
Lyon, Grenoble, and Aix-en-Provence will join Paris in its efforts to reduce environmentally unfriendly — SUVs — within their cities. Details including exact borders, hours of the day, time of year, and penalties have yet to be finalized, but citizen living within or frequently visiting the cities should plan for the changes by late 2011 or early 2012.
London already has a low emission zone encompassing most of the city but currently only affects large trucks. Starting in 2012, London will further restrict its boundaries, charging drivers of most large vehicles a $155 daily fee just to enter the zone.
