Color us befuddled. This is a McLaren P1, circling the Nürburgring. Not too out of the ordinary, right? Well, direct your attention to the very last photo in our gallery of spy shots (also conveniently located to the right), and notice the graphic: XP2R Prototype Vehicle.

Is this a new McLaren that's powered by an ion engine? Perhaps it burns refined goat milk rather than gas? The reality is likely far less spectacular. The XP2R is almost certainly the testbed for a more potent version of the already freakishly quick McLaren P1, or perhaps even a prototype of an upcoming endurance car to take the place of the 12C racer.

We're leaning towards the former rather than the latter, simply due to the seeming lack of racing-specific bits. The windows look like glass, rather than Lexan, and the aerodynamics package looks too close to stock to be for racing. There's also no evidence of racing-spec safety features in the cabin, although it's difficult to tell for certain from these images.

Or maybe McLaren just trotted out an old prototype of the P1 so we'd jump all over it and some engineers in the UK could have a laugh. Whatever the XP2R is, we're keeping our ears to the ground for any additional info and we'll be sure to update you as soon as possible.

Acho que este carro deveria ter-se distanciado um pouco mais do 12C, tanto a nível de motorização como em espaço temporal.

Poderia ter-se esperado um pouco mais e ter-se feito algo realmente extraordinário e revolucionário como foi o antigo F1. Algo como 1kg/cv e 1200cv ficaria perfeito e aí poderia até usar-se outra vez o nome "F1"

Fresh Videos of McLaren P1 XP2R Prototype and an Official Response On What It Is - Carscoops

When we shared pictures and a video of a silver McLaren P1 tester wearing a pair of discreet stickers that read "XP2R Prototype Vehicle", shot by our spy photographers on the 'Ring the other night, we admitted that, besides the red calipers, there was nothing different about this car over the Geneva show model and that we didn’t know what it was.

McLaren solved the mystery on Friday by telling Autocar magazine that the P1 XP2R is not a special edition, new version or a racecar variant, but simply a tester of the standard P1 that will soon be available and which combines a 3.8-liter bi-turbocharged V8 with a KERS hybrid unit to produce a combined 903HP (916PS) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft).

The McLaren spokesman went one step further explaining the code names of prototypes to the publication: XP stands for eXPerimental and denotes early testers; the VP tag indicates Validation for later prototypes and PP is for Pre-Production models. The number "2" on the specific prototype reveals that it is a second test car, while the "R" indicates that it is a Revised prototype. So there you have it.

Parece que a produção do P1 está quase toda vendida. Nas Américas, na Ásia/Pacífico e no Médio Oriente, não resta nenhuma unidade. Apenas no Velho Continente, o nosso continente, ainda existe um punhado de unidades por vender. Apesar disso, a marca não deve "pô-los à venda" noutro continente, de modo a preservar a exclusividade pretendida para parte do globo.

The McLaren P1 has nearly sold out, with only a few examples remaining for sale in Europe.

All examples of the P1 destined for the Americas, Asia Pacific and the Middle East have now been sold.

A small number remain available for sale in Europe, with McLaren unlikely to shift P1 allocation from one region to another to meet demand in order to preserve exclusivity of the car in each particular region.

The continued economic uncertainty in Europe is being put down as the reason why the P1 has not quite sold out in the territory yet.

McLaren received a sales push for the P1 in North America on the back of its appearance at the Pebble Beach after a McLaren F1 sold for $8.47 million at an auction earlier in the week, raising interest in the firm.

Around 80 to 90 per cent of P1 customers have opted for some level of unique design from McLaren Special Operations, pushing the average sale price of a P1 above £1 million.

Até ver testes dos 3 carros, este para mim é o melhor. O mais bonito, o melhor dimensionado para se conduzir em qualquer lado (o LaF é enorme), etc etc

Deve estar próximo da perfeição este carro; E muito próximo de ser O melhor carro do mundo

A unica coisa que continuo a não gostar muito nestes dois modelos McLaren, P1 e 12C é o som, pelo menos nos videos nunca achei nada de especial. Gostava de poder um dia ouvir um ao vivo a ver se a minha opinião mudava.

A Ferrari a nível de sonoridade é praticamente imbatível, salvo raras excepções (p.ex.: CGT, LFA).
O 12C inicialmente era muito "morto" e foi bastante criticado, mas depois a McLaren fez varias modificações que alteraram o barulho e agora está muito melhor. Creio que aprenderam a lição e que já tenham criado uma melodia melhor neste P1. Pelo video do Jay Leno pareceu-me bastante interessante, principalmente quando ele mete em Race Mode.
