2012 Chevrolet Malibu

Chevrolet’s current Malibu was a huge success when the company needed it, winning a place on our 2008 10Best list and proving that the bow-tie brand could build more than monster SUVs and pickup trucks. Now that the compact Cruze, even smaller Aveo, and minute Spark are all on their way, the Malibu is up for a little refresh.

The current car is sleek enough, but the overall design isn’t particularly elaborate. The 2012 model will change that with a bit more rake to the beltline, echoed by a faint crease in the body side. The nose and tail will certainly see the most change, but our spies weren’t quick enough with their cameras to catch the front of the car. In the tail, we see additional ornamentation around the trunk, which is recessed deeper into the surround sheetmetal and plastic. The top of the decklid appears to taper into a sort of flat, ducktail shape, like the more-controversial BMW designs of the last decade.

While it won’t look worlds different, the new Malibu will be comprehensively altered beneath the skin. It will join the Buick Regal and LaCrosse on GM’s new Epsilon II platform, an evolution of the current car’s Epsilon I bones. It will be slightly wider and a little taller, alleviating our primary concerns about the interior. Materials used inside the car supposedly will be vastly improved, although we hope the money to do so didn’t come out of the design budget—the stylish cockpit is one of our favorite things about the current car. Expect to see the HiPer strut system recently unveiled on the 2010 Buick Lacrosse to find its way onto top Malibu trim levels.

No doubt this is just the beginning for spies stalking the Malibu, as the car’s introduction probably won’t happen until the 2011 Detroit auto show. Stay tuned for more photos—maybe we’ll even get one of the nose next time.

USA: fourth quarter of 2011
Restantes Mercados: Alguns meses antes

It's been a while since we've heard about the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu. In its current form, the aging 'Bu is a competent aging dog in need of some new tricks, but General Motors is hoping to put its mid-sizer back at the top of the segment with the all-new model. Early predictions lead us to believe that the 2012 Malibu would show its face at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in January, but we're now thinking that a New York debut is in order.

For 2012, the Malibu will be shortened, riding on the smaller Epsilon II platform that underpins the Buick Regal. Sources who have seen the finished product tell us that while the exterior dimensions have shrunk, there's no shortage of space inside the car, and we expect the interior to be a giant leap forward from the cabin found in the current model.

Earlier reports have suggested that the 2012 Malibu will only be offered with four-cylinder powertrains (like the Regal), meaning GM's 2.4-liter direct-injected inline-four is a safe bet for the base engine, and the more powerful 2.0-liter Ecotec turbo-four will likely replace the V6 option. A hybrid powerplant is also understood to be in the works. All engines will come with six-speed transmissions, and we've even heard rumblings about optional all-wheel drive for the Malibu. Currently, only the Ford Fusion and Subaru Legacy mid-size sedans are available with all-wheel drive.

Production of the new Malibu is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2011, though rumors have been circulating about an even earlier start date. Initial production will begin in China and Korea several months before the North American-spec version, as GM is prepping its Fairfax and Detroit Hamtramck plants for 2012 Malibu duty. While you're waiting, check out the latest set of high-res spy shots in our gallery.

DETROIT, SHANGHAI – The all-new Malibu will transcend time zones and embrace the diversity of cultures around the world when Chevrolet simultaneously unveils it at the Shanghai Auto Show and on Chevrolet's Facebook page.
Chevrolet provided a sneak peak glimpse today of its all-new Malibu. Chevrolet will unveil the new Malibu live starting at 8:30 p.m. EDT on April 18 (2:30 a.m. CET on April 19) at http://www.facebook.com/chevrolet. Consumers are encouraged to post questions during the reveal on Twitter using #MalibuReveal or on Chevrolet's Facebook page in the Malibu tab. Members of the Chevrolet team will be on hand to answer questions during a live moderated question and answer session following the web reveal.
The timing of the Web reveal coincides with the April 19 auto show debut of the new Malibu in Shanghai. The new Malibu will also be shown at the New York International Auto Show, which is open to the public April 23 through May 1.
"The new Malibu takes Chevrolet's established and award-winning nameplate to new places and introduces it to new audiences around the world," said Susan Docherty, vice president of GMIO Sales, Marketing and Aftersales. "Whether the Malibu is sold in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, or Australia, it was designed from the ground up to meet the needs of customers around the world."
The Malibu will feature a global family of fuel-efficient and powerful four-cylinder engines, along with six-speed transmissions that also contribute to efficient performance. The Malibu was designed to stand out in all markets around the globe. The new Malibu is Chevrolet's first midsized car to be sold globally. It will be sold in nearly 100 countries on six continents and built in multiple locations, including China and two facilities in the United States.
The Malibu was Chevrolet's – and GM's – best-selling car in the United States in 2010, with sales of nearly 200,000 vehicles. It is among Chevrolet's most decorated vehicles in the United States, earning more than 40 industry awards since 2008. The Malibu was the only midsize car in the industry to win the Consumers Digest Automotive "Best Buy" award the last three years – 2011, 2010, 2009. The Malibu has also been named the "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety the last two years.
With the new Malibu, Chevrolet continues to position itself for worldwide growth. General Motors' largest brand is in the midst of introducing a global family of fuel-efficient cars including the Cruze, Volt, Sonic/Aveo, Spark and Malibu. These new cars compete in the four largest vehicle segments in the world, which accounted for 54 percent of all non-luxury sales in 2010. The global segment that Malibu will compete in represented 9 percent – more than 5.7 million vehicles – of global sales in 2010.
Last year, Chevrolet sold 4.26 million vehicles globally, or an average of one vehicle every 7.4. seconds. Eight of the top 10–selling markets for Chevrolet in 2010 were emerging markets – Brazil, China, Uzbekistan, Mexico, Russia, India, Argentina and Colombia. Emerging Markets are expected to account for more than 50 percent of Chevrolet global sales by 2012.
More than 600,000 Malibu cars have been sold globally since 2008, when it was named the North American Car of the Year. The 2013 Malibu represents the eighth generation of the nameplate, which was introduced in 1964.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu leaks online

2013-chevrolet-malibu-large-2.jpg

Well, what do we have here? It seems that the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu has leaked online on General Motors' own media site. Only this lone picture has surfaced, but it gives us a very good glimpse at the next-gen Malibu ahead of the car's official debut at the rapidly approaching Shanghai Motor Show.

Despite the fact that we can only see one angle of the car, it's clear that the 2013 Malibu will be a nice looking piece of sheetmetal. Up front is the latest incarnation of the stacked Bowtie grille of the currentChevrolet range, flanked by a pair of multi-element headlights. The flanks are well sculpted, with a distinct Coke bottle kink that catches the eye.

We can't see the rear of the car from this shot, but we know that the 2013 Malibu will sport tailights reminiscent of the Camaro's four-pack of red lenses. And, judging by the few teasers of the interior, GM intends to pack its next midsize entry to the gills with all the latest technology.
