Scuderia Toro Rosso breaks cover
Liuzzi on track in the RB1 chassis

Michelin-shod RB1 chassis
Red Bull’s new Formula One team, Scuderia Toro Rosso began its charge today.

Making its first official outing on the opening day of a three-day test in Barcelona, the team took to the race track as Scuderia Toro Rosso for the very first time.

Running a restricted-V10 Cosworth powered RB1 with Michelin tyres, the team completed 325km of testing, as it began to develop its technology ahead of 2006.

Although the team’s livery and its 2006 chassis is yet to be revealed, the test gave the team its first chance to experiment with the technical set up of the current RB1 and observe how it handled on the track.

Despite low ambient temperatures of between 5°C and 16°C, the team and drivers gained valuable data and experience during the day’s testing.

Vitantonio Liuzzi completed driving duties today and is set to continue tomorrow, while young American driver Scott Speed will take over for the final day.

Williams unveil interim livery
Priaulx to test in Barcelona

A retro look for the Williams Cosworth FW27C
WilliamsF1 today released details of an interim winter livery that the team will carry over the December and January tests ahead of the launch of a wholesale change of the team’s identity on January 27, 2006.

Fashioned on a base palette of midnight blue with white detailing, the FW27C will carry the white flying chevrons and white nose flash that graced Frank Williams Racing cars in the late 1960’s and the early 1970’s prior to the formation of Williams Grand Prix Engineering in 1977.

Inspiration for the interim livery at Williams
The livery came to prominence in 1969 on Piers Courage’s Brabham BT26. This livery re-connects Williams with its lengthy pedigree which extends over three decades. The team will run in these colours until the team’s new identity and livery is revealed on Friday January 27, 2006 when the FW28 is launched at the team headquarters.

The team takes to the track in Barcelona tomorrow for an all-important debut run with new Cosworth V8 technology to meet the 2006 technical regulations. In addition to marking the first on-track activity with the team’s new engine partner, tomorrow’s test will also mark first time in five seasons that the team has taken to the track on Bridgestone tyres.

The team also confirmed that recently-crowned World Touring Car Champion, Andy Priaulx, would be joining the team to assist with the first winter test in Barcelona at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain. Priaulx will assist regular drivers Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg, pending the nomination of a full-time test driver for the 2006 season.

F1 prestes a mudar de mãos

[xx(]??? ou [:X]???

Ecclestone sells F1 stake, but what will it mean?

It has been a six-year battle for the control of Formula One, involving not only the ever-powerful Bernie Ecclestone, but two German media companies, a bevy of banks, the Bambino Trust, and the breakaway Grand Prix Manufacturers' Association.

But the battle now looks to have finally been resolved, with the sale of both Ecclestone's and Bayerische Landesbank's stakes to CVC Capital Partners, a UK-based private equity firm with over $18 billion in investments -- including, notably, ownership of Dorna, the commercial rights holder of MotoGP, the equivalent of F1 on the motorcycle racing side.

Mr Ecclestone himself, is not about to disappear from the scene, in spite of his 75 years, and is expected to continue to stay involved on a day-to-day basis.

"CVC is committed to a flourishing and successful FIA Formula One World Championship," said Donald Mackenzie, one of CVC's managing partners. "We will support every effort being made to maintain Formula One at the pinnacle of world motor sports."

The challenge will be to convince the GPMA, which is planning to launch its own breakaway series in 2008, to abandon those efforts and to sign up long-term with the new F1 ownership. Mackenzie underlined the need for those negotiations: "CVC has given its full support to the current discussions between Formula One, the teams and manufacturers to enable a successful extension of the current Concorde Agreement."

Billions change hands

The saga began six years ago, in late 1999, when Mr Ecclestone agreed to sell 12.5% of his holding company, SLEC -- which had by then gaine commercial control of Formula One -- to Morgan Grenfell Private Equity, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank, for $325 million.

MGPE had an option to buy an additional 37.5% but was unable to exercise it, so in early 2000 Mr Ecclestone sold that 37.5% share to a venture capital firm called Hellman and Friedman for $975 million. A mere month later, Hellman & Friedman joined forces with MGPE to form Speed Investments, and then sold the SLEC holding through a sale of Speed Investment shares to EM.TV, a leading German media firm for $1.6 billion, or a profit of $300M.

Later that year, EM.TV went through a financial crisis, with its share price plunging from $88 to $3, and EM.TV was forced to look for help from Leo Kirch, the head of another German media empire. Mr Kirch drove a hard bargain, and was able to take a 78% stake in Speed Investments (and thus 39% of in Formula One) for $550M. Kirch also had Speed Investment exercise an existing option held to purchase an additional 25% SLEC for a round number of $1 billion.

At this point, then, Kirch owned 58%, EM.TV 17%, and Mr Ecclestone and his wife Slavica 25%. Mr Ecclestone was $2.3 billion up on the deal, MGPE and Hellman and Friedman had made $300 million -- and EM.TV had lost $700 million.

Acrimony on track and in the boardroom

By this time, though, the manufacturers -- companies like Mercedes, BMW and Honda -- had realized that they were bearing the risks and costs of participating in Formula One, but the SLEC paychecks had several more zeroes to them. With their hands tied by the Concorde Agreement, the manufacturers started planning a breakway series that would provide them with they viewed as a fair share of the revenues and of the control of the series.

This initiative eventually grew into the Grand Prix Manufacturers' Association, and the plan to launch a rival series in 2008 -- but, naturally, at the cost of depriving Formula One of many of its star attractions, such as McLaren-Mercedes, Williams-BMW, Honda and Toyota.

Meanwhile, in the world of finance, there was no shortage of intrigue. Kirch's media empire had begun uraveling in 2002, and in June 2002, the arm that held the Speed Investment shares -- it had meanwhile acquired the remaining shares from EM.TV -- became insolvent, and ownership of Speed Investments, and thus 75% of SLEC, passed to a group of banks: Bayerische Landesbank, JP Morgan Chase and Lehman Brothers.

However, Mr Ecclestone was not about to cede control of Formula One to a group bankers. In spite of owning mere quarter of the shares, Bambino Trust, the Mr Ecclestone family's Liechtenstein-based trust which held 25% of the shares, used rather unconventional techniques that took advantage of a multi-layered corporate structure to elect SLEC's board of directors and exercise effective control of F1.

The banks did not take this sitting down, though, and sued Mr Ecclestone to gain control of the associated companies, winning an initial judgement against Mr Ecclestone and Bambino in late 2004.

The legal issues are now cleared up with the CVC acquisition -- and Mr Ecclestone has now made an impressive $3.3 billion from the four separate sales of SLEC shares, surely moving him up several notches on the list of the world's richest individuals.

The new world order

The new ownership structure, with a company that is experienced in operating a motorsport series at the highest levels -- through Dorna and MotoGP -- then holds much promise.

"We are delighted to have CVC as a shareholder whose long-term strategies and vision will provide the stability for teams, promoters and manufacturers," Mr Ecclestone said. "They are knowledgeable about motor sport and make an ideal partner for Formula One."

However, many teams and manufacturers are still digesting the implications of the news.

"It's extremely positive news for Formula One," said Ron Dennis, the team principal of McLaren Mercedes and one of the leading team owners.

But will the manufacturers be convinced? GPMA's statement said that the organization was looking "forward to entering into a constructive dialogue with Alpha Prema (the new holding company formed by CVC) as we pursue our objective to further develop the sport for the benefit of all stakeholders and, in particular, the fans. However, we will continue the preparations for the new series."

Much more will surely become clear as the dust settles from this latest episode in the saga of Formula One commercial rights.

FIA unveils radical wing concept

Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has revealed plans for an innovative rear-wing design which it says could dramatically increase the amount of overtaking in the sport.
The Centreline Downwash Generating (CDG) Wing is effectively two small rear wings - one over each wheel - with a clear gap in between. This gap would create a wake in which a following car would generate more downforce, allowing them to run much closer to the car in front through corners, hence making passing easier.

The FIA hopes to see the design introduced as early as 2007 in conjunction with a return to wider wheels and slick tyres. The idea will be presented to a meeting of the Formula One Commission in London on Monday, where future regulations will be discussed.

The CDG Wing marks the first results of the FIA’s collaboration with technology partners AMD, researching ways of improving the aerodynamic performance of a car when trying to overtake.

“This new research is important for the future of Formula One,” said FIA President, Max Mosley. “By introducing the CDG wing we can give motor sport fans exactly what they have asked for, wheel-to-wheel racing with much more overtaking.

“It is our hope that the teams will collaborate with us in the optimisation of this radical new idea so that the aerodynamic benefits can be introduced into Formula One in 2007 rather than having to wait until 2008.”

Major revisions to the aerodynamic regulations introduced in 2005 achieved their objective of cutting speeds. The downside was increasingly intricate bodywork designs which created high levels of turbulence behind the cars, making it more difficult for following cars to overtake.

Klien fastest as Barcelona testing gets busy

Winter testing started in earnest at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya this week and after only three cars were present on Monday, 10 drivers were on track on November 29th. Red Bull and the debuting Scuderia Toro Rosso, formerly Minardi, ran restricted V10 engines while McLaren, Toyota, Williams and BMW Sauber all worked with V8s. It was also Toyota and Williams' first trip out with Bridgestone tyres.

Christian Klien was at the top of the times for Red Bull with a best of 1:17.567. The team also had newly-signed official test and third driver Robert Doornbos at work. The Dutchman, who most recently raced for Minardi this season, was eighth quickest.

McLaren, who were fastest yesterday with DTM champion Gary Paffett, fielded testers Alex Wurz and Pedro de la Rosa. They were second and fourth on the time sheet respectively and both drove an interim MP4-20B chassis. McLaren will take a scheduled break on Wednesday and return on Thursday with Juan Pablo Montoya and de la Rosa behind the wheel.

Toyota's new TF106, the first of the 2006 challengers to be unveiled, took to the track for its maiden outing. Team tester Ricardo Zonta was third fastest and Jarno Trulli was fifth overall. Ralf Schumacher is also scheduled to be at work this week, then Toyota will move to Jerez for two more test sessions in December.

Toro Rosso, running a Red Bull RB1 chassis with Michelin tyres, had Tonio Liuzzi sixth on the time sheet. He will continue on Wednesday before Scott Speed takes over on Thursday. Red Bull has yet to confirm its driver allocation but Liuzzi and Speed driving the cars of the new squad this week increases speculation that the pair will race for Toro Rosso in 2006.

Toro Rosso was initially thought to be continuing Minardi's partnership with Bridgestone but it now seems the team will run on Michelin tyres. Along with Williams and Toyota, Ferrari and MF1 Racing, formerly Jordan, will be the teams on Bridgestone rubber.

Recently elevated from tester to race driver at Williams, Nico Rosberg was seventh fastest. The car was liveried in the interim winter colour scheme of dark blue with white detailing. The team also had World Touring Car champion Andy Priaulx behind the wheel and he rounded off the times in 10th. Williams has yet to announce an official test driver and Priaulx will assist Rosberg and Mark Webber in the meantime.

BMW Sauber was the other team at work and Nick Heidfeld was ninth on the time sheet in the B spec C24 chassis. Data acquisition was the main task of the day, focusing on the BMW P86 V8 engine. Heidfeld completed 26 laps but a fuel leak meant his running was halted in the afternoon. He will continue tomorrow with engine and system evaluation.

Michael Schumacher consegue voltar à frente de Giancarlo.
FA: "O quarto é o Fisi ou o Michael?"
RN: "És o terceiro. Raikkonen está na frente. Dezessete segundos depois vem o Montoya. Vinte e quatro segundos depois está Alonso. Mais 15,8 segundos, Michael. Mais 4,9 segundos, Fisi. Todos já pararam, menos o Kimi."

Volta 59:

RN: "12 segundos.

RN: "Excelente trabalho, Fernando. Assim como em todas as corridas de 2005..."
FA: "Somos campeões do mundo!!!"

Eu aposto no Kimi Raikkonen ou no Jason Button!
Porque continuo a acreditar que o piloto tem mais importância do que o carro. O Kimi é o melhor piloto mas a McClaren não foi muito fiável.A ver vamos
