Assim vamos verificar e tentar decifar quem fabrica o quê, claro assim haja interesse em querer vêr...

* Dual-core systems are faster computers, because they are essentially two CPUs (central processing units) on one chip.
* If you buy a new computer, make sure it has a dual-core processor.

Intel also plans a new program to be kicked off this summer. It has contracted with a number of laptop manufacturers to produce laptops with interchangeable parts and receive Intel certification. Laptop manufacturers include ASUS, Toshiba, and Quanta (which manufactures laptops for other resellers). These manufacturers provide laptops for Dell, Gateway, and others.

Intel will provide support for these systems thru their Intel products dealers, including Computing and Network Services' Technology Service Center. These dealers will be able to sell and service these laptops, and Intel will provide 24-hour turnaround time on repair parts.

GEN-X-PC has been in the laptop business since 1996. We realized many of the so called "laptop manufacturers" produce what seemed to be, an identical product. This seemed odd to us, so we dug a little deeper. What we found was very interesting. Hopefully, the information below will shed some light on who makes what.

Virtually none of the "Name Brand" manufacture their own laptops. The few notable exceptions are IBM, Acer, Toshiba, Twinhead and Apple. Yet, they even do not make all of their own. All of the rest buy their laptops from what is called an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM).

ODM - Original Design Manufacturers

ODMs are the true manufacturers who actually cast, and assemble the main unit which includes the motherboard, outside casing, and display. A few examples of ODMs are Quanta, Compal, Clevo, Mitac, Asus, AOPEN (Acer), Uniwill, and TwinHead-- perhaps you have never heard of these companies before. But you have definitely seen their systems under other well known brand names. ODMs are usually located somewhere in Asia, and may have distribution centers in the US. ODMs distribute their product to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Each ODM sells its computers to several different OEMs.

OEM's - Original Equipment Manufacturers

OEMs add the Memory, Processor, Hard Drive, Optical Drives and software to the systems. The OEMs perform final assembly and stick their label (Brand) to it, and call themselves manufacturers. Their products are then sold directly to dealers/resellers like GEN-X-PC or directly to the public (i.e. DELL). However most companies such as Dell now have their laptops assembled in Asia. Our OEMs are in the USA, assembled in the USA and our 24 hour 7 days a week Toll Free Tech Support is 100% USA. Once these companies add in these components, they have a complete laptop. They then put their label on it and market it.

For example:

* An ODM named Clevo makes the Sager NP5670 and the Alienware Area 51-M, the Voodoo MClass M550, the Hypersonic Sonic Aviator, and they are all the same computer. Clevo also makes the Sager NP8882 and NP8887 and the Voodoo MClass M600 and they are also the same computer. Of course, the Sager models have a much sweeter price tag!

* An ODM named Compal (not to be confused with Compaq) makes some of the the DELL, Hewlett Packard and Compaq line of laptops--plus some others.

* Quanta makes many of the Dell Latitude, IBM, and Sony Vaio laptops.

* GVC makes the Micron Transport Treck and Treck 2.

* Inventec makes many of the Compaq brands.

* Clevo and Kapok make certain models of the Sager Computer. Clevo and Kapok are different divisions of the same company and are among the largest and best in the world.

* Other ODM names are Mitech, Kapok, Clevo, ECS, FIC, Twinhead, and Uniwill--just to name a few.

Some call this the "Dirty little secret of the Laptop Industry."

A diferença está no grau de exigência de cada marca, perante o fabricante!
Por exemplo, conheço marcas certificadas que são produzidas nas mesmas que fazem as chamadas marcas de "linhas branca".
Contudo, o cuidado dado à produção não tem nada a ver, ao não estivessemos a falar de uma marca certificada e bastante re****da.

Tudo depende da exigência dessa marca....
Há marcas certificadas que são piores que outras não certificadas!
O problema é que em algumas industrias, para os fabricantes de topos de gama não interessa o certificado ISO da marca, pois, não lhes afecta as vendas e nem gastam uma pipa de massa para conseguir o certificado.
Dou-te um exemplo muito simples, o Oleo Fula é certificado e o 3ás ou Maná não são, apesar de virem do mesmo sitio e serem muito superiores

Já á alguns anos que quase tudos os componentes são feitos por uma mão cheia de fabricantes localizados quase todos na Asia.

Componentes esses que depois são feitos de acordo com as indições das variadas marca.

Por exemplo numa placa de som, a placa de circuitos pode ser feita no Vietnam, os condensadores na Malasia e os chips na India, sendo tudo montado na China (basta olharem para o hardware mais velhote que tem em casa e ler o que lá está escrito).

Claro que issto não é geral e os varias peças podem vir de varios países para serem montadas na China por exemplo.

Temos o caso da compra da IBM pela Lenovo como exemplo mais flagrante, os pc's continuam a ser feitos no mesmo local, mas agora tem a marca Lenovo (que por acaso tem feito um grande esforço para inovar e manter os altos indiçes de qualidade anteriores).

Não, mas já trabalhei com 2 Asus e já trabalhei com um Sony Vaio.

Apesar de se situarem na mesma gama de preços, o Sony tem uma montagem superior.

Já agora uma visão sobre algumas das empresas posicionadas nos 100 maiores da insdustria mundial de IT.

Interessante ver que algumas compraram os negócios de marcas conceituadas, ou então as parcerias que mantem, colocam o seu nome na sombra mas mantem nomes como IBM, Phillips e outros na ribalta, os produtos são essencialmente Made in Taiwan ou RPC.

On June 7, Novatek announced that May sales fell sharply, down 15%, as customers didn't see the surge in demand for LCD TVs ahead of the World Cup that they had expected.

Não, mas já trabalhei com 2 Asus e já trabalhei com um Sony Vaio.

Apesar de se situarem na mesma gama de preços, o Sony tem uma montagem superior.

Não gosto muito de me "meter" em guerras de marcas, mas por exemplo, o meu chefe tem um SONY de 2000€ que veio com o DVD avariado. Quando regressou com um DVD novo, passado 1/2 semanas começaram a saltar 2 teclas.

Sempre tive portateis ASUS, e na minha opinião, a qualidade de construção é bastante superior aos SONY que trabalhei.

Como dizem os ingleses, yesterday's news</u>...

Hoje em dia os processos de fabrico estão concentrados em poucas unidades e os de assemblagem estão mais disseminados.

É natural uma fábrica em Taiwan produzir um componente com 100% de qualidade garatida e na mesma linha de produção sairem produtos com 10, 15 ou 20% de qualidade. Tudo negociado e com o pricing adequado.

Mas quem fala em electrónica, fala em bicicletas, máquinas de lavar, componentes automóveis, o que vocês quiserem...

Agora podem ter a certeza que são produtos diferentes, em termos de qualidade e de desempenho. [8D]

As únicas marcas que fabricam os seus próprios portáteis são a Toshiba (parte), Asus (totalidade), Samsung (parte), LG (parte) e algumas outras mais pequenas (Fujitsu, etc.).

Os Asus são feitos ou na China ou em Taiwan, depende do estatuto de cada modelo.
