Bentley estuda novo modelo para concorrer com Porsche Panamera

Novo modelo da marca britânica está apenas dependente de autorização da administração do Grupo Volkswagen

A Bentley estuda a possibilidade de lançar um concorrente directo de Porsche Panamera e Aston Martin Rapide. O futuro modelo poderia basear-se no Audi A7 – o novo coupé de quatro portas topo de gama da marca alemã -, aproveitando sinergias do Grupo Volkswagen.

De acordo com Franz-Josef Paefgen, director geral da Bentley, o estudo está em fase muito prematura e dependente de autorização da administração do Grupo Volkswagen, de forma a não afectar a carreira do Porsche Panamera e Audi A7, que chega no inicio do próximo ano.

A confirmar-se, este modelo passaria a ser o Bentley mais acessível, não só pela redução de custos com a partilha de componentes com o Audi A7, mas também com a adopção do futuro V8 Turbo de 4 litros, que está a ser desenvolvido pelas duas marcas para o Continental GT.

New Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer inherited a high-end marque with only two product lines; the recently refreshed Continental GT and the spanking new Mulsanne. The two vehicles are tasked with continuing to prop up the brand after sales dropped to only 4,616 units in 2009, and according to a The Detroit Bureau help could be on the way.

During an interview with outgoing Bentley boss Franz-Josef Paefgen, the CEO said that Durheimer is tasked with noodling the idea of a third model. If we were the betting type we'd place our chips on a high-end electric car to help the brand reach rising emissions standards or an "entry model" under $150,000 to help increase volume – and the latter seems far more likely. At any rate it appears a third Bentley is still years out even if Durheimer and his team decide to expand its product lineup.

Bentley's ice breaker for Geneva

To celebrate it’s world ice speed record breaking Supersports convertible, Bentley has announced that it will make a limited production run.
Limited to just 100 units and revealed at the Geneva show, the all-wheel drive, biofuel-powered 6-litre, 12-cylinder Continental Supersports convertible will feature ‘vibrant and muscular styling cues that reinforce the uncompromising performance credentials of this extreme Bentley convertible,’ according to the company.
Among these are the ‘Ice Speed Record’s’ three stand-out exterior colours - Beluga, Quartzite and, fittingly, Arctica White – as well as 20-inch, 10-spoke Supersports wheels with a dark tint finish.
On the inside, you’ll find diamond-quilted Alcantara to doors, quarter panels and seat facings, and ‘soft-grip’ leather on the steering wheel and gear lever. Also included are high-gloss carbon fibre on the dashboard, centre console and roof panel, featuring red weave. The seats, too, are piped in red and a touchscreen infotainment system from the new Continental GT also features.
Powering the ‘Ice Speed Record’ is the firms six-litre, twin turbo-charged W12 engine, producing 631bhp and 590lb ft of torque. This is mated to a ‘quickshift’ six-speed automatic ‘box launching the convertible from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds according to Bentley.

Even if Bentley claims it’s a new generation we still think it’s just a bigger face lift. Just with the recently released Continental GT, the “new” GTC will get a new front with head lights in Mulsanne look, and a new front bumper. And if you look closely you will notice the more upright grille. Also the lines on both front and rear fenders are looking sharper than before. At the back, there will be new rear lights.

Inside there are new seats and an updated dash with a new sat nav. But there are also some news under the hood, the W12 has gotten a refresh with more power and less CO2, and soon you will also be able to order your GTC with a 4.0 liter V8.
