All-new Jeep Wrangler will feature eight-speed ZF automatic transmission
To cut fuel consumption by more than 9 percent
A filing this month with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) shows the 2018 Jeep Wrangler will get an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Scheduled to go on sale towards the end of 2017, the all-new Jeep Wrangler will be available with a ZF-developed eight-speed automatic gearbox which will replace the old-five speed 'box and cut fuel consumption by more than nine percent. It's the same transmission installed in the Ram 1500, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango.
It should be mentioned the 2015 Jeep Wrangler equipped with the aforementioned five-speed auto returns 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. It seems Jeep wanted to replace it with the eight-speed gearbox earlier than 2018 but apparently the more efficient transmission is not compatible with the current Wrangler.
The overhauled Wrangler is expected to retain the body-on-frame structure but receive an aluminum body which will enable a massive diet. Production will likely take place at the Toledo Assembly Plant, although initially Sergio Marchionne hinted the next Wrangler could be built elsewhere.
