Vauxhall Vectra GSi V6 (Revista EVO)
Vauxhall Vectra GSi V6 | Long Term Tests | Car Reviews | evo
"Why do so many of you have such a low opinion of Vectras? Maybe it's because most of the cooking versions are worthy but deeply hum-drum, a sort of Travis of the car world. Perhaps because the saucier ones, the SRis and so forth, always seem to be driven by thrusting junior executives, jacket on the coat hook, Nokia wedged between ear and shoulder, brain in the cupholder. Even in this office there are Vectra snobs (step forward, Lord Metcalfe) who get all sniffy when the Vauxhall keys are up for grabs. Whatever the reason, the general consensus seems to be that Vectras are a bit naff, not quite the full Mondy.
Well, you're all wrong. Or rather, you're wrong about this one. Pin back your ears, roll up your eyelids, open your minds - the GSi, with its meaty, beaty, quad-cam V6, is a proper evo motor. And if you can get your petrol-head around that, you'll join a small but enlightened band.
Our GSi first scrunched up the gravel drive to Evo Towers just over a year and a half ago, with a mere 116 miles tucked under its fat Yokohamas. I'd reckoned the estate version was by far the coolest choice of the three GSi variants - saloon, hatch or wagon - and since the Tomalin household comprises Mr & Mrs T, three kids and two dogs, it was also the pragmatic choice. First expense was a sturdy steel-mesh guard (£84) to keep the hounds in their place. Unfortunately Vauxhall is yet to devise something similar for children.
GSis start life as SRis, which are then given a thorough working over by MSD (Motor Sport Developments) in Milton Keynes. This involves some pretty tasty kit - in our case 215/45 Yokohama AVS Sports (now standard issue on the Aston Vanquish and Porsche Boxster, incidentally), cool six-spoke 17in OZ alloys, bitier brakepads, thuggish Magnex tailbox, racerish Irmscher spoilers, and inside, hip-hugging Recaro seats, alloy gearknob and a hunky steering wheel with part leather, part shiny plastic rim.
But the heart of this conversion was the extra 24bhp that MSD squeezed out of the 2.5-litre V6, lifting peak power to 192bhp, chiefly by dropping in reprofiled camshafts (there's now a 2.6-litre version, with fewer horses but extra torque, more of which later). It didn't take long to suss that the engine was what makes the GSi special. It had a really purposeful burble at idle, and when you took it to the red line it went all Alfa on you, tightening to a nape-prickling yowl. Even Lord M liked that. Only problem was, it seemed to have a couple of flat spots as the revs climbed and only pulled with real vigour over the final 2500rpm. Combined with long-striding gearing, this meant plenty of shifting to keep it simmering - full-blooded redline lunges were fine when you were in the mood, but a bit of a bind when you weren't. Initial fuel consumption was a bit scary - even on long hauls we couldn't better 25mpg, though when it was thoroughly loosened up it was quite possible to achieve high-20s. During the fuel crisis (what did you do in the fuel crisis, daddy?) it actually topped 30.
But the GSi wasn't just about straight-line urge. Lotus had a hand in retuning all the Vectra chassis a couple of years ago, and those wide, low-profile Yokohamas sharpened the GSi up still further. It wasn't the last word in fluidity or delicacy, but there was a tautness and a connectedness that made it a genuinely satisfying steer. It's amazing what a difference having decently supportive seats makes too, and those Recaros were just superb.
Other likes included the kickin' CD hi-fi, the air-con, and the Trafficmaster. Dislikes? The wheels filled the arches to overflowing, which looked great but meant they were particularly prone to kerbing. In winter, first thing in the morning, the alloy gearknob felt like changing gear with an icicle. And I became increasingly conscious of the limited interior space. It's an age thing (the car's, not mine). Cars in this class have become bigger, roomier - the new Mondeo feels as tall and airy as a cathedral by comparison. The Vectra's got a decent boot, but it has no more passenger space than a Golf, and with three growing children competing for space, long journeys often felt like a couple of hours on the Gaza Strip.
If the Vectra didn't have the perceived cool of the Alfas on the fleet, it did at least have seemingly bombproof mechanicals. Or so I thought. If the GSi had left a month earlier it would have departed with a clean bill of mechanical health. Up to that point our visits to our local dealer, Wellingborough's York Ward and Rowlett, were purely for routine servicing (10,000-mile intervals, £145 for the biggest), and the engine used only half a litre of oil in between services.
Then one afternoon the GSi returned from a photo shoot with smoke seeping from under the bonnet. It looked worse than it actually was. A small oil seal had blown, depositing drips onto the exhaust manifold; an easy fix by the dealer, and no charge. But I'd also begun to notice a rumbling noise that crept in at around 60mph. We suspected a wheel bearing, and we were right. The front nearside bearing was worn at just over 30,000 miles. Replacing it cost £127.62.
Then there was a metallic rattle, almost a sort of 'pinking' sound, which we began to notice after about 25,000 miles and occurred when the engine was under load, accelerating hard from mid-revs. Never did get to the bottom of that one.
The Yokohama AVS Sports suited the Vectra right down to the, er, ground. Good grip, wet or dry, progressive breakaway and a decent ride too. With plenty of motorway miles and swapping the rapidly wearing fronts to the back when they were getting close to the wear indicators, they lasted 15,000 miles per set, which is good going for what is, by reputation, a sticky tyre.
What else went wrong? The Magnex tailbox almost slipped off its rubber donuts. The brake fluid light came on - the reservoir was topped up at the second service. The paint on the front spoiler suffered extensive stone-chipping. Otherwise the Vectra seemed extremely well screwed together. It was often commandeered to shift bulky loads and it stood up to the rough treatment pleasingly well. It even withstood the paws, claws and jaws of our hounds from hell.
Depreciation was steep. The thing is that people are shy of buying these hairy Vectras because of their reputation for freefall depreciation. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Nineteen months was plenty long enough to get to know the Vectra 2.5 really well. It's a seriously good car, if not a great one. What it needed, apart from more space (not much they can do about that till the all-new car comes along) was a more even spread of torque, a bit more life in the steering and bite in the brakes, and a little less roll in the body.
And we're about to find out if our wishes have been answered, because starting this month we'll be running one of the new 2.6-litre GSis. Another Vectra? No problem. Remember, they're OK.
