Ralph Gilles, CEO da SRT confirma Viper Roadster

Every single previous generation of the Viper was first shown as a roadster, with the coupe models entering the lineup at a later stage. With the new 2013 Viper that dropped the Dodge nameplate and adopted the SRT badge, Chrysler turned the tables around by launching the fixed-top coupe.

Does that mean we will not see a roadster of the new generation model? When Wards Auto popped that question to SRT boss Ralph Gilles at the Chicago Auto Show, he confirmed the development of a brand-new Viper Roadster.

Given that, with the previous iteration of the Viper, it took Chrysler four years to present the Coupe after the open-top model, the publication asked Gilles when does he expect SRT to release the roadster: "We won’t wait that long to begin selling a convertible version of the new Viper," replied Gilles. What this means is that we could see the Viper Roadster within the next couple of years.

The Chrysler executive added that the automaker designed and engineered the Viper to be a convertible from the offset. "Under the skin is a convertible chassis. It’s already there – the stiffness is there. It’s extremely easy should that come, but we’re not in any rush," he said.

The always-talkative Gilles answered a few more questions in relation to the coupe model, in which he revealed that more than 80 percent of the first 800 buyers opted for the more expensive $120,395 GTS version vs the $97,395 base model. Chrysler had forecasted that 70 percent of initial sales would be GTS models.

"I’m very proud we can do the SRT at that price point," he told Wards Auto. "I can’t think of another car on the planet that powerful and fast, capable of 206 mph (332 km/h) and under $100,000."

Gilles also said he doesn't see the new Corvette as a direct rival due to the higher price tag and exclusivity of the Viper, but welcomed its presentation. "Corvette allows Viper to exist, and vice versa. But I think they are very different cars. We are very low volume, race-special, bespoke, more exotic in a way than Corvette is."

SRT's boss also pointed out that he is extremely pleased with the quality of the new Viper's cockpit. "I would put that interior up against anyone in the world," he said. "The fit-and-finish is on par with the very best. I’m including Aston Martin in this, as well as the Porsche 911."

SRT Viper ACR coming in 2014, might be neutered for Ferrari's sake - report

Office politics could limit a legend

The Dodge Viper ACR managed to set two production lap records at the Nürburgring Nordschleife and a new report is indicating the next-generation model is due in 2014.

According to Motor Trend's sources, the next super snake will have an aerodynamic body kit with a front spoiler and a massive rear wing. We can also expect a reduced ride height and a sport-tuned suspension with adjustable dampers, stiffer springs and beefier anti-roll bars. The car is also slated to feature high-performance brakes, bespoke Pirelli tires and a multitude of weight saving measures.

Interestingly, the magazine is reporting that office politics could determine if the ACR gets a power boost. SRT CEO Ralph Gilles has previously suggested the Viper wasn't allowed to exceed the power-to-weight ratio of the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta so they matched it at 5.2 pounds per horsepower. Sources have hinted the Viper’s 8.4-liter V10 engine could produce more power than the F12's 6.2-liter (6262cc) V12 which develops 730 bhp (544 kW). Ferrari, as you can imagine, isn't too happy about this possibility so it seems like the ACR could be hamstrung by their Italian counterparts.

            SRT Viper TA (Time Attack)

Time Atack.

SRT Viper: European imports | evo

Fancy an SRT Viper? The latest V10 supercar will only officially be sold in America, but a handful of Vipers have made it to Europe via import.

GeigerCars, a German importer set up in 1979, is bringing the Viper to its homeland, though at 139,900 euros (around £120,000), it’s priced considerably higher than its 97,395 US dollar price (circa £65,000). That takes it away from undercutting the Porsche 911 Carrera to fighting the Audi R8 V10 and new 911 Turbo. Though the likely Viper buyer is probably intentionally seeking its extreme rarity and muscle car brutishness.

The 2013 SRT Viper uses a 640bhp, 600lb ft 8.4-litre V10 engine. Its carbonfibre and aluminium body helps to a 1521kg kerb weight, enough for a 428bhp/ton power-to-weight ratio – the same as a Ferrari F50 or Lamborghini Murcielago SV, cars which top 200mph.

GeigerCars currently have three 2013 Vipers for sale, in red, black and yellow. Click here if you’re tempted

Hennessey com mais de 700cv testa o Viper GTS Venom 700R

                    0-60 mph in 3.1s

Hennessey Performance is continuing its testing procedures for the 2013 Viper GTS-based Venom 700R which was announcedabout a year ago.
The Venom 700R package is compatible with both Viper and Viper GTS models and manages to squeeze 705 bhp (526 kW) at 4,400 rpm from the V10 8.4-liter engine. Torque figure is up to 695 lb-ft (941 Nm) and these changes are enough to grant the car with a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) run in 3.1 seconds. It will do the quarter mile in 10.7 seconds at 134 mph (215 km/h) and is capable of achieving a top speed of 216 mph (347 km/h).

To get to these figures, Hennessey had to install high-flow cylinder heads and stainless steel long tube headers, K&N air filter, three-inch stainless steel exhaust system and high-flow catalytic converters. Optional goodies include carbon fiber front splitter and canards, rear spoiler and wing, along with a rollbar, fire extinguisher, rear differential cooler and a Penske double adjustable coilover suspension.

The Venom 700R can also be configured with lightweight monoblock wheels and a five-point Sabelt racing harness. Other carbon fiber interior trim bits and pieces are available upon request, together with custom painted stripe options and various tuner badges.

SRT Viper TA first drive review Review | Autocar

                        What is it?

Less than a year after its introduction, the first special-edition SRT Viper has arrived, the SRT Viper TA, and in keeping with the car's racing success, this new variant is a capable track-day special. TA stands for 'time attack', referring to the qualifying-style competitions popular among American racing sanctions.
Fundamentally, the configuration of this American supercar is unchanged from its outrageous original spec. The massive 8.4-litre V10 makes the identical 640bhp and 600lb ft as the standard SRT Viper, and still delivers neck-straining acceleration. The ratios for the short-throw six-speed manual gearbox and final drive are unchanged.

Yet the devil is in the details, as they say, and mostly under the skin. The suspension is thoroughly improved for track work, with spring rates up 20 per cent. Stabiliser bars are over 30 per cent stiffer and the two-mode, electronically adjustable Bilstein DampTronic dampers, which are revised to suit the changes in stiffness, are restricted to just Sport and Race settings. There is no Street setting.
SRT fits the lightest available original-equipment forged alloy wheels, finished exclusively in matt black, and wraps them in wide Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres. The aggressive alignment settings are specific to the TA and are more suited to chasing lap times than enjoying long-distance drives through California.

The cockpit is kept refreshingly simple and focused, and is finished in black with contrasting orange stitching throughout. The Sabelt-supplied buckets are trimmed with back-to-basics cloth inserts – a welcome choice over cowhide for track-day drivers. The leather-covered, flat-bottomed steering wheel is the perfect size and shape, too, and the sort of ideal wheel you get when the company’s CEO is both a designer and a racer.
The TA gets the six-outlet bonnet that's optional on lesser Vipers, with the addition of a new, two-piece, ankle and driveway-friendly splitter design. In a tip of the hat to the longevity of the splitter elements, each includes a replaceable rubbing strip. The tall rear spoiler includes a cut-out to help rearward visibility, but the view out of the hatch has gone from passable to barely usable.

                        What is it like?

Acceleration, both on the circuit and from a standing start, is breathtaking. SRT quotes a 0-62mph time in the low-3.0sec range, and forward thrust remains raw and brutal but a drag racer this is not. Instead, the TA was designed to help its driver extract the best possible time around a circuit, lap after lap.
The soft, steamroller-width Corsa tyres deliver virtually limitless grip. Turn-in response is sharp, directional changes immediate and steering feel is well above average for this hydraulically-assisted system.
While cornering, the chassis maintains a predominately neutral balance, and even this 1538 kg thriller can be flicked in to turns, drifted and caught confidently. Power oversteer is available, but only with highly aggressive throttle inputs.

The TA’s aerodyanmics help. According to SRT, downforce is up 600 per cent at 150 mph, although those improvements in downforce also markedly increase drag coefficient from, .369 to .433. This results in a 193mph top speed versus the standard car's mind boggling 206mph.
The new brakes feature a new front rotor design from Brembo that increases swept area by 13.5 per cent. Pagid supplies a new brake pad shape with a more track-orientated compound. The brakes offer exceptional feel and modulation, and so much stopping power that maximum braking demands the use of six-point race belts. Thankfully, the seats were designed to accommodate them.

                        Should I buy one?

As ultra-high-performance cars become filled with more layers of tech, the Viper TA stands alone, a beacon of sorts, representing all that is good in a track-day special.
But the aero, suspension, and alignment changes tame this Viper – to a degree.

The SRT Viper TA is a straightforward package with epic power, tremendous grip and sharp steering and dynamics that lend the driver confidence to explore the car's – and their own – limits.

SRT Viper com "Grand Touring Package" e nova cor "Stryker Green" - Detroit 2014

The newest, high-impact exterior paint color for the SRT Viper was shown today for the first time at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The Chrysler Group’s SRT (Street and Racing Technology) brand introduced “Stryker Green,” an evolution of the iconic Snakeskin Green exterior color that first appeared in 2008, which features enhanced green and yellow pigments and a “liquid mercury” appearance. The color is the perfect choice for SRT enthusiasts that want to take their SRT Viper to the next level of exclusivity with a vivid and unique color that reflects light to show off the dramatic curves of the Viper.

“We’re continuing to develop and build unique, low-volume, special-edition colors for the Viper that adds to the exclusivity of our American-built flagship supercar,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, SRT Brand and Motorsports. “Every SRT Viper is painted with a process that is very similar to what we use for our show cars. The application of the new Stryker Green exterior paint is a very detailed and intricate process, taking approximately eight hours to complete. The process first starts with a base color coat followed by a green-tinted mid-coat and topped off with a clear finish. Each coat application adds depth and accentuates the curvature of the Viper’s exterior design.”

Also making its debut on the 2014 SRT Viper is the Grand Touring (GT) special package featuring standard Nappa leather seats, five-mode Electronic Stability Control and the two-mode Bilstein® DampTronic Select suspension, both previously only available with the Viper GTS price class. The GT option package will be limited to the new Stryker Green and Venom Black exterior colors.

Stryker Green exterior color will be available starting in February on the Viper GTS price class, and the SRT price class with the new GT package.
The fifth generation of iconic American-built supercar returned in 2013 as the SRT (Street and Racing Technology) brand’s flagship performance machine with more power and performance, superior craftsmanship, new technologies and creature comforts. Power from the 8.4-liter mid-front V-10 engine delivers 640 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque.

Chrysler vai parar a produção do Viper durante 2 meses devido ás baixas vendas

Chrysler Group has suspended production of its SRT Viper sport coupe for at least two months because of slow sales, the automaker said today. As a result, 91 hourly workers at Chrysler’s Conner Avenue Assembly in Detroit will be laid off, a spokeswoman said. The Detroit Free Press reported the production suspension earlier today.
“Chrysler Group confirms that its Conner Avenue Assembly Plant will be down, beginning the week of April 14. Production will resume the week of June 23,” the company said in a written statement.

Through January and February, U.S. dealers had sold just 91 of the 640-hp two seaters, and had 756 vehicles unsold on March 1, a 412-day supply. Vipers have traditionally not sold well in winter in part because its specialized tires do not grip well in cold weather.
SRT brand head Ralph Gilles launched a new marketing campaign for the Viper late last year in which factory teams visit Viper dealers to allow consumers to test drive the hand-built sport coupe.

Gilles said that many dealers keep the expensive cars, which list for over $100,000, locked in their showrooms, limiting sales. The test drive teams started their marketing push in the South over the winter, and will expand north as warmer weather returns.
