The new Defender is here at last. Auto Express can lift the lid on the long-awaited replacement for the legendary Land Rover after the firm released these first official pictures.

This is the DC100 concept, and it’s set to cause a stir at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show with its futuristic reinvention of the pioneering off-roader’s iconic design.

The car has been confirmed for launch in 2015, and although official details are still scarce, the Land Rover design team – led by Gerry McGovern – has aimed for what it calls a “functional and purposeful design” that celebrates the practicality of the original.

Trademark Defender styling cues such as the door mirrors and floating roof are set to go hand-in-hand with off-road extras such as a winch, sump guards and heavy-duty tow hooks. Headlights inspired by the Range Rover Evoque add a dash of upmarket style, as do the raised bonnet line and aggressive alloys.

In profile, the block-like shape is combined with sharp creases in the body. Angular glass all-round creates a rugged, wedge-like shape.

Under the skin, the DC100 is expected to feature an updated version of the heavy-duty platform from the Discovery 4. It also offers an enhanced Terrain Response System, as well as an advanced traction control set-up. Power is likely to come from a range of new four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, all developed in-house at Land Rover.

No details on interior design have been released, but the latest satellite navigation and communication systems are expected to feature. This will be a world apart from the agricultural design of the current model.

A few weeks ago, we reported on the huge responsibility Land Rover felt in replacing the Defender, with boss Colin Green telling Auto Express: “If we get it wrong, we are messing up one of the industry’s biggest icons.”

Design chief McGovern explained: “This isn’t a production-ready concept, but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century.

A Land Rover é uma empresa e tem de dar lucro e o actual Defender não ajuda a que tal aconteça, logo precisa de uma nova imagem. Desde que as capacidades fora de estrada se mantenham, força, até acho giro o concept.

Ui, isto ia dar sangue
Passei os olhos pelos comentários na página Land Rover no Facebook, e no meio de 70-80 comentários acho que só encontrei um positivo.

Visto em isolamento, temos um objecto sobre 4 rodas, no geral, até bastante conseguido.

Mas compreendo as criticas em contrário. Está demasiado "bonitinho", city-chic para se levar a sério como proposta para o sucessor do Defender.
As pessoas estavam à espera de testosterona, machão com pelos no peito, e sairam-se com as últimas tendências metrosexuais.
As linhas não expressam um modelo que deveria conseguir ir ao fim do mundo e voltar.
E, tendo em conta o tipo de clientela que o Defender costuma servir, desde forças de segurança a outras de foco bastante utilitário, até ao "lord" de veia rural que usa o seu velho Defender para percorrer os seus terrenos; as linhas não se parecem adequar ao propósito, apesar da inspiração óbvia.
Veria o actual Discovery, com o seu estilo brutalista, numa versão "back to basics", como um sucessor mais digno do Defender que este concept.

O caminho a seguir provavelmente terá de ser o mesmo que a Jeep seguiu com o Wrangler. Um objecto algo anacrónico nos dias que correm, e apesar de o Wrangler já não ser a escolha óbvia para o tipo de clientela que o Defender ainda continua a servir, ainda consegue expressar visualmente o foco da sua existência.

Isto será sempre um modelo complicado de substituir, mas ainda com 4 anos pela frente, ainda há tempo para rever a abordagem.
Esta mais parece saído de um exercicio universitário, em que se explora de forma menos castrante, e apenas focando no estilo, possibilidades para um futuro hipotético.
DEveriam pegar nos designers da Land Rover e colocá-los no meio da savana, floresta tropical ou numa quinta qualquer e só poderem fazer uso de um Defender.
Certamente orientá-los-ia no caminho certo do que se espera de um modelo como este

Alberto se asustó cuando vio el prototipo del nuevo Defender que se descubrirá en el Salón de Frankfurt. Ciertamente le comprendemos, porque el cambio respecto a la generación actual era bestial, pero... ¿Quienes somos nosotros para juzgar al Defender? ¿A caso eramos clientes potenciales del mismo?

Land Rover busca recuperar el terreno perdido a manos de Toyota y sus indestructibles Land Cruiser, ofreciendo un producto suficientemente moderno como para copar un buen lugar en el mercado. Y el concepto y diseño a mi, en particular, me parece muy similar a la relación entre el viejo y el nuevo MINI, donde más allá de un parecido estético, hay poco más que compartir.

Pero si aun con todo esto sigues con tus dudas existenciales sobre el nuevo Defender, puede que los renders creados por Project Kahn, especialista en preparar coches de Land Rover, te roben un poco más el corazón, al ser más cercanos a lo que uno espera de un Defender: un coche rudo, de trabajo, pick-up, medio militar... ¿Qué me dices ahora?

Frankfurt show: Shock new Defender
Land Rover has revealed a second, ‘cool’ version of its DC100 Defender replacement concept at the Frankfurt motor show.
This second concept is aimed at demonstrating the image and design flexibility that it intends to build into the new model, which is due in 2015.

Dubbed DC100 Sport, the yellow-painted supporting concept is a sporty, open-topped speedster-style vehicle with cut-down screens and a twin-humped fastback tonneau to shroud its rear seats and payload area. Like its fixed-head twin, it rolls on 22in alloy wheels and ultra-low-profile tyres.
The Sport has the same three-plus- three seating plan as the first DC100, a reference to the front seat layout of original Land Rovers. The Sport is at this week’s Frankfurt show, standing alongside the more mainstream ‘tool’ version of the DC100.
“We want to acknowledge the strong design of the original Land Rover without being harnessed to it,” says design boss Gerry McGovern. “Deciding how far you go in recognising the current car is one of the biggest challenges. Today’s Defender is a fantastic machine but it has many faults: it is hard to build, not very space efficient, the driving position is cramped, it’s not very comfortable for passengers, and so on. We have to replace it. Our task is to realise what makes it great and to come up with a modern design with the same attributes – the advantage of modern design and none of the drawbacks.”

However, the project is not being contemplated merely to recreate an icon. Land Rover sees this as an opportunity to sell the kind of ‘premium durability’ SUV that no one else is making – in the same way as it opened a brand-new niche for the Range Rover Evoque – in a world market for 2.3 million functional 4x4s.
The company’s target is to make the new Defender as versatile and easy to configure as current models.
It has an eye on sales to industrial users, farmers and international bodies like the UN as well as ordinary customers. However, producing specialist army versions – once an important source of sales for Land Rover – may be attractive in future, says brand chief John Edwards, but it won’t be the early priority.
The plan is to launch the car in 2015, at volumes industry watchers estimate at about 50,000 units a year.

At Frankfurt, the DC100 provides an impressive showcase for Land Rover’s accumulating store of new technology. Power is by 2.0-litre petrol or diesel engines with both hybrid and plug-in capabilities, driving through an eight-speed gearbox. Intelligent stop-start is standard, along with latest-generation Terrain Response (probably with a new ‘auto’ function to reduce driver workload). The powertrain has a traditional transfer box to provide permanent four-wheel drive, but it incorporates a ‘driveline disconnect’ system that decouples the rear axle to save fuel when all-wheel drive isn’t needed.
Among more speculative technology, the DC100 has solar panels on its roof, continuous internet connectivity, a new kind of key fob recognition called RFID (for Radio Frequency Identification) and a soft metallic silver finish for much of its interior to reflect the sun’s rays and keep the interior cooler. Much use is made of lightweight and recycled materials, to emphasise sustainability – a Land Rover watchword.
Interiors are trimmed with Ultrafabric and Superfabric, two new premium-feel materials of enormous durability, and the cabins contain built-in induction charging stations for battery-powered gadgets such as power tools.

Although Land Rover chiefs insist that reaction to the DC100 concepts will guide them in deciding the detail specification of their new model, much work has clearly already been done. The Sport concept – whose surfaces and dimensions are identical below the waistline to the original – is the best evidence yet that Land Rover bosses actually decided some months ago to replace their 63-year-old icon with an all-new model with similar abilities and key dimensions to the current model, but without the shortcomings.
Both DC100 concepts use “a lightweight, mixed alloy platform”, according to Land Rover’s official statement. More candidly, insiders say there are at two competing chassis options: a shortened and lightened version of the existing T5 (which has a main drawback of weight but also has a sophisticated all-independent suspension) or an all-new platform that would eventually be used in several wheelbases for a wide range of Defender models. Given the planned Defender model flexibility and required strength of the new model, there seems little doubt that any new chassis will be a separate ladder-frame design.
No conclusion has yet been reached about where the new Defender might be made, but Edwards believes that as much as 90 per cent of production could find buyers outside the UK (Land Rover sells in 167 export markets), which suggests that the model may well be manufactured abroad, perhaps in India, where parent company Tata Motors is based, or in China, where Land Rover sales are booming and are expected to grow larger still.
