Renault pulls out of Smart ForTwo partnership - report
Project is reportedly overweight and over budget
The alliance between Daimler and Renault-Nissan is starting to unravel as the latter company has reportedly withdrawn their support from the next-generation Smart ForTwo (codenamed Project Edison).
Car Magazine says Renault was has decided to axe their version of the 2014 ForTwo because the model is overweight and over budget. The matter is further complicated because the ForTwo diesel will be replaced by a petrol variant that uses a 0.9-liter three-cylinder engine with approximately 65 bhp (48 kW). This doesn't sound like a huge change, but the model will have worse fuel economy and higher CO2 emissions than the outgoing diesel version.
As we have previously reported, the 2014 ForTwo will be slightly longer and wider than the current model. It will have styling inspired by the ForVision concept so expect a perforated grille, oversized headlights and a Tridion Safety cell.

Smart Fortwo to adopt new look | Autocar
Longer and wider Smart improves on passenger protection and accommodation
Smart's 2011 Forvision concept previewed new Fortwo technology
The Smart Fortwo is set to dispense with its familiar one-box silhouette in favour of a one-and-a-half-box profile when an all-new model arrives next year, insiders at parent firm Mercedes-Benzhave revealed.
The new look is said to be dictated by a longer bonnet and a considerable increase in width.
The aim of the changes is to provide the third-generation city car, due out in 2014, with class-leading levels of front impact protection along with improved interior accommodation.
The overall length is said to have grown by up to 80mm to about 2750mm, and the width is set to increase by over 100mm to 1660mm.
Despite the adoption of a longer bonnet, the Fortwo is set to retain its rear-engined, rear-drive layout — an arrangement that rival car makers have described as being prohibitively expensive.
The mainstay engine will be a 0.9-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection petrol unit in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged guises. Today’s 799cc three-cylinder diesel will be ditched on cost grounds.
In its place will be a pure electric version of the Fortwo, with the latest 87bhp electric motor from Bosch in combination with a lithium ion battery pack from Accumotive — a company partly owned by Mercedes parent Daimler.
Further details remain scarce, but speculation surrounding the new Fortwo suggests that it will offer crashworthiness on a par with that of significantly larger superminis, together with a new two-and-a-half-seat interior layout along the lines of the Toyota iQ.
The new Fortwo will form part of a new range of Smart models that is also set to include a follow-up to the discontinued Forfour, as well as a possible junior off-roader that inherits the ideas first explored on the stillborn Formore, development work on which was halted in 2005.

Smart SUV arriving in 2016 - report
With 4WD
It seems Mercedes-Benz is bringing back to life plans of launching a Smart SUV/crossover.
It was the year 2005 when Mercedes-Benz played around with the idea of launching an SUV based on the Smart platform. Known as ForMore, the model never got to see the light of day but things may change in the next few years as a new report indicates the Smart lineup will be expanded with a sport utility vehicle sometime in 2016.
What we known so far is that it will come with an increased ride height, body cladding and a four-wheel drive setup (possibly optional). It will most certainly be based on the second generation of the ForTwo which is expected to go on sale in 2014, following a reveal later this year.

An anonymous source at Renault has confirmed to Leftlane that the firm's tie-up with Daimler will enable it to get its own version of the third-generation smart fortwo.
Expected to be the smallest Renault ever introduced, the upcoming vehicle will possibly adopt the Twingo moniker, which would indicate a two-pronged approach to replacing the current, second-gen model.
Identical to the smart under the skin, the car will be powered by a rear-mounted 0.9-liter two-cylinder engine that will make around 64 horsepower, providing plenty of oomph for city driving. Transmission options are not known, but the current smart's single-clutch automated manual will likely be replaced with a smoother, more user-friendly unit.
Designers are going to great lengths to differentiate the two models in order to avoid blatant badge-engineering. The smart will borrow styling cues from the forvision EV concept that bowed at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, while its French cousin's look will be inspired by Renault's current design language.
The rear-engined Twingo will likely bow shortly after the smart fortwo, which is earmarked for a debut in early 2014. We wouldn't be surprised to see the city car in the flesh for the first time at next year's Geneva Motor Show.

2014 Smart ForTwo comes into focus
Promises to be larger and more stylish
Smart is gearing up to launch a redesigned ForTwo and new details are starting to emerge about the upcoming model.
According to Autobild, the 2014 ForTwo will measure 2.69 meters (8.8 feet) long and be 10 cm (3.9 inches) wider than its predecessor. Despite the increased dimensions, the magazine says the car will have a 7.50 meter (24.6 feet) turning circle which is 1.25 meters (4.9 feet) shorter than its predecessor.
The extra width will result in a more accommodating cabin that will reportedly be equipped with colorful trim, a "huge" tachometer and a large touchscreen display. We can also expect additional storage compartments and a unique climate control system that has chrome-plated sliders.
Power will likely be provided by an assortment of three-cylinder engines which will be paired to a dual clutch automatic transmission. There have also been rumors about an electric variant which could use an 87 bhp (65 kW) electric motor.
