Rafael Nadal is guaranteed to claim the No. 1 South African Airways ATP Ranking one week before the US Open begins. Nadal will rise to No. 1 for the first time in his career August 18 after he reached the semifinals of last week's Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati and current No. 1 Roger Federer lost in the third round. Nadal, who this year became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win the Roland Garros and Wimbledon double, has ranked No. 2 behind Federer for a record 159 consecutive weeks (since July 25, 2005). Federer has held the top ranking a record 236 consecutive weeks (since Feb. 2, 2004).
The Spaniard leads the ATP circuit with seven titles in 2008, most recently winning his 12th ATP Masters Series title at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. The 22-year-old already stands third on the list of ATP Masters Series title leaders (since 1990), behind record holder Andre Agassi (17) and Federer (14).
Nadal had won 32 consecutive matches before falling to World No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the Cincinnati semifinals.
The Spaniard will become the 24th player in the history of the South African Airways ATP Rankings (since 1973) to hold the No. 1 position. He will join countrymen Carlos Moya (1999) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (2003) to rank No. 1.
"I'm very, very happy to be No. 1," Nadal said in Cincinnati. "Be No. 1 always is, I think, is a present for a lot of work in the past."
