Asif Kapadia, the director of the documantary ‘Senna’, says he doesn’t like current F1 where “you have one person with all the best tech and everything, and then even when they don’t win, they’ll switch the rules on the last lap”.
Asif Kapadia, the director of the award-winning documentary ‘Senna’, says he was contacted to direct the 2021 Netflix documentary on Michael Schumacher.
Kapadia says he wasn’t interested because he “wasn’t a huge fan” of the seven-time champion. While explaining his reason, Kapadia even blasted the current era of Formula 1 and Max Verstappen’s dominance.
He then also blasted the controversial finish of the
2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In the closing moments of that race, race director Michael Masi
disregarded rules that govern the use of the Safety Car, and this allowed Max Verstappen to win the race and the title.
Since then, many have openly stated that
Lewis Hamilton was wronged in this situation, and practically ‘robbed’ of his deserved eighth championship title win.
Kapadia seems to be one of those people, as he called what happened in Abu Dhabi “a load of bollocks”.
“They did contact me [about directing the Schumacher documentary],” Kapadia told Daily Star.
“I know Jean Todt [former Ferrari Team Principal and Schumacher’s friend], I know quite a few people that were in Ferrari at the time.
“I kind of had a little nudge from Jean Todt’s partner Michelle Yeoh. I’d done a film with her before. I did get a little message saying ‘would you be interested?’ I should be honest, I wasn’t. I, I have to be honest.
“What I like about this era is the best car drivers and the best car racing each other. What I find terribly boring is one great driver is like ‘I want a s*** team mate so I can win everything’.
“I don’t see the point of that, which is what I think the most boring eras of formula one are like.
“We have that right now, where you have one person with all the best tech and everything, and then even when they don’t win, they’ll switch the rules on the last lap, which was a load of bollocks…
“I wasn’t a huge fan [of Schumacher], I’ll be honest,” Kapadia concluded.
