Rendering: BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
In March 2011, German magazine Auto Motor Und Sport reported on a rumor that BMW plans to introduce a new 4 Series line-up. Beside the coupe and convertible variants, the magazine said at the time that a four-dour coupe type of vehicle will be introduced as well.
The new 4 Series will also allow BMW to price the vehicle slightly higher, at a premium price. The 4 Series Gran Coupe is said to compete with the A5 Sportback and it will feature a coupe-like roof line.
Last year, we reported several times on BMW’s plans to launch a 3 Series Gran Turismo variant and according to our sources, the vehicles is still on schedule to launch in 2013. It is unclear at the moment if the two rumored vehicle are in fact one and only.

The overall dynamic design would appeal to a younger demographic as well and will be a viable alternative to the high-end 6 Series Coupe.
As always, rendering artists begin to illustrate how the final design might look like.

Rumormill: New BMW 1 and 2 Series, M2, Z2, FWD vehicles
Yet again the restless BMW insider Scott27 comes to disrupt the BMW news world. As always, take some of the following predictions/speculations with a big grain of salt, since at the moment, confirming them would require turning into James Bond and sneaking into BMW’s HQ.
So what’s new from the usual BMW source? A lot, if all these rumors become true: 1 Series FWD, 2 Series, M2, Z2 and some other cryptic future BMW models. Let’s have a look and try to filter through these rumors. (The insiders’ words have been slightly edited to eliminate grammar mistakes)
The new Premium Compact Class.
In order to make room for the new family of Front wheel Drive BMW’s. BMW are now locked in to separate its core compact premium family.
![]()
BMW 1er Front Wheel Drive Family
Sharing architecture with the next MINI , the BMW entry models retain the 1er designation but will be identified by unique badging. BMW’s first foray into the highly contested Premium City segment will comprise of unique concepts with a sporty edge. The wheels may be front driven or in the case of the FAST, optional xDrive, but the mission statement remains the same to offer a unique sporting impression even though the rules have been changed.
- City Compact
- F.A.S.T. Family Activity Sports Tourer
- Gran Turismo
- Z2
The Z2 now becomes part of the FWD architecture and will comprise of a single model Roadster, the car is extremely compact and will offer a entry choice for a sporty BMW.
BMWBLOG: Nothing new here really. We heard about the niche 1er vehicles, along with the 1 GT (Compact Activity Tourer) and Z2. While the BMW insider says that the 1er Gran Turismo and Z2 will be FWD, our own sources state the contrary. The two vehicles have been developed along the new 1 Series family and the rear-wheel drive platform, and at launch time in 2013, the BMW core driving platform remains embedded within the two niche cars.
BMW 1 Series sDrive
The imminent new Sporthatch continues its success story in a much more rounded successor. Especially focusing on the increase of the wheelbase for rear passenger accommodation. Launched with a significant number of features for a new BMW, the new 1er justifies its cause in regards to the importance for the upcoming growth of the Premium Compact Segment; allowing luxury options normally found in high end Premium luxury cars available in the compact class.
- Sporthatch 5dr
- Sporthatch 3dr
The new 1er Sporthatch also heralds the introduction of next generation “Efficient Dynamics” technologies in order for the 1er to remain the principle choice as the most fuel efficient car in its segment.
BMWBLOG: Same news we reported several times. The new F20 1 Series Hatchback will be unveiled next month and we let some info slip in our past articles.
BMW 2 Series
In order to seperate the Performance and sportier body shape of the Coupe and Cabrio, BMW will rename the cars as the 2er, bypassing the need for overcrowding with the new Sporthatch / FWD Family. The 2er showcases some new design movement with further progressive sporting interpretation of the hatch; to some the new car looks more 2002 like than before. The Cabrio model will continue offering a soft-top roof and clean design lines without compromising looks and performance.
- Coupe
- Cabrio
Both will be launched in 2013 respectively.
BMWBLOG: Here comes the info confirmed by us before anyone else. Yes, there will be a 2 Series family and the Coupe and Convertible from the new 1 Series will move up in class.
BMW M2
Since it is given that the baby 1er M Coupe should really have followed through and be called M1 in relation to the rest of the M cars, the inclusion of M2 allows the M Division to bypass that dilemma and offer a straight choice of M2. Following on from the exceptional response to the new 1er M Coupe, the new car allows more money and time and the ability to progress. Although the 1er M Coupe showcases what is possible in a tight time frame, BMW will work to emulate the current car by making sure that weight loss is significant a benefactor because it looks to its forebears with the inclusion of a high performance four cylinder turbo charged engine.
The problem with the current car is it’s short window in regards to further progress, there are ideas but not the money nor the time to do so. This is something that will be rectified with the next generation as the regards to bring a successor “That will push the envelope” for small performance cars.
BMWBLOG: BMW M2? Sure, a logical step since the 2 Series family will come to life, BUT… a little bit to early to make any assumptions. A possible M2 won’t be revealed until 2014-2015, so the naming convention, or even the greenlight for such model are years down the road.
Under Consideration:
BMW 2er Gran Coupe
Extended four door Coupe of the 2er Coupe with sleek design and sporting coupe roofline. Intended for sDrive family albeit with optional xDrive.
BMW 1er Touring / Shooting Brake
Lifestyle choice, configured in either 3dr or 5dr Intended to be designated as a sDrive model albeit with optional xDrive.
BMWBLOG: Huge speculations here and in our opinion, very small to none chances.

Video: BMW Track Trainer at Laguna Seca
DrivesTV brings us a new video of the BMWautonomous Track Trainer 330i doing some laps at Laguna Seca. The BMW Track Trainer is designed specifically to help drivers develop advanced track driving skills by being shown the correct way around the track with correct lines, braking points and turn in.
It features three modes, the first being autonomous, where the car controls the driving, the second uses sequences of lights to show the correct turning points and the third records the driver’s inputs and allows them to be replayed later for analysis and coaching with a professional driver.
The autonomous car is built on the standard production of the 330i model, but the software underlying the vehicle is quite special. Utilizing a combination of built-in GPS, a signal booster and accompanying repeater (increasing bandwidth and accuracy down to the centimeter), a custom map of the track and a trained driver to show it the optimum racing line, the Track Trainer learns the course and can show budding racers how to do it right.

The software is made out of complex algorithm to determine theoretical grip, while wheel speed and spin sensors send data to the computers to interpret the exact amount of suspension load, power delivery and braking force necessary to keep it out of the weeds. A driver feedback display mounted on the center console shows drivers how close the car is to the optimal line while in control.
It its lifetime, the 330i Track Trainer has already accumulated 12,000 miles of testing.

Fonte: BMW BlogReady for another rumor? The restless Scott27 stirs up more controversy on the interwebs. According to the BMW insider, the designers are toying with the idea of a new M supercar, a true successor to the iconic M1. “The strategy has just begun and where it is at is a few sketches by the design department and ideas conjured around a conference table. We have no production plans yet,” said the insider.
The supercar is currently dubbed M-One because it could be the first of its kind in the new generation of BMW vehicles. Scott27 remains vague about other details, but the use of CFRP is mentioned, new materials and parts that BMW is expected to use in their upcoming vehicles. The M1 Hommage mention is present as always with new speculations around a BMW supercar.
The rumor says an internal design sketch was created, a mixture of Vision ConnectedDrive and the upcoming 2014, but the drawing serves an unknown purpose.
“The sketch was developed entirely for a different purpose. But the idea did catch attention and since BMW did not focus on the design angle for the Connected Drive concept car they were taken aback when reaction to the car was very well received.
But since the sketch caught senior attention they have added a roof and a higher windscreen to judge reaction and you could see the return of the concept this time as a coupe. But it could form the car/s in question because of its bloodline to the original and hommage of the M1.”
Fingers-crossed BMW would build the car, when would it hit the road? “If greenlit, it will be after 2015″, says the source.
Our advice, take this rumor with a big grain of salt. In the past years, there have been extensive conversations and internal projects around a BMW supercar, but the company’s sustainable plans seem to rely on efficiency and future mobility, rather than an Audi R8 fighter.
BMW M2 Trademark Filed
According to 1Addicts, BMW AG has submitted trademark fillings for a potential BMW M2 model. First rumors around an M2 car appeared back in December of 2010, followed by another report last week that brought to light new details around the future M.
We have recently confirmed that a BMW 2 Series family will include the new 1er Coupe and Convertible. The two vehicles move up a class to differentiate themselves from the other 1er models. So clearly, this drives the conclusion around a potential M2 model that will fit in the same family.
Sources close to the brand say that while the 1er M Coupe showcases what is possible to achieve in a tight time frame, for the future “baby-M” BMW will work to emulate the current car by making sure that weight loss is significant. The engine under the hood will be a brand new high performance four cylinder turbocharged engine.

o secure the M2 name, BMW filed the trademark with the German patent office, as well as with the USPTO (US patent and trademark office).
The filling itself does not guarantee that the badge will end up on the car, but rather giving BMW a chance to secure potential naming conventions. A potential BMW M2 will come to market no earlier than 2015.

BMW Z4 by 3D Design
With the summer driving season upon us, 3D Design has unveiled a new styling package for the BMW Z4.
Looking decidedly aggressive, the car features a front splitter, extended side skirts and a carbon fiber rear diffuser. There's also a trunk-mounted spoiler, a stainless steel sport exhaust system and 19-inch alloy wheels.
Interior changes are fairly limited but customers can order aluminum pedals and a three-pod instrument cluster for the center console.
