Flat-four 2.5-liter with 350+ bhp

According to Flat-6 News Porsche will launch a flat-four engine later this year for the Boxster/Cayman.

This smaller engine will probably be unveiled in September at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and is rumored to be based on the flat-six 3.8-liter powering the Carrera S but without two of its cylinders. The 2.5-liter mill will feature the firm's DFI – Direct Fuel Injection, a single turbocharger and VarioCam Plus.

It is expected to produce more than 350 bhp (261 kW) and a peak torque of 360 lb-ft (487 Nm). It will rev up to 7,500 rpm and should come mated to an updated PDK which will make use of the increased low-end torque. Porsche is currently analyzing whether to offer the 6-speed manual transmission for this smaller engine.

The first cars to get the flat-four, 2.5-liter power unit will be the Boxster/Cayman, followed sometime in 2015 by a new entry-level model but without the turbo.
