WRC: OMV abandona o automobilismo

Dani Sordo
.......

What is your objective?

"I will endeavour to finish ahead of Mikko Hirvonen and, above all, Marcus Gronholm. The best way Marc Marti and I can help Sebastien and Daniel is by depriving their rivals of points. We know it won't be easy but I hope I will be able to profit from my good feeling on asphalt, the potential of the C4 WRC and the work everyone at Citroen Sport has put in to make the car so competitive."

Rally Catalunya: OMV Kronos preview

Great Spain-balance

Francois Duval can look back on an impeccable balance in Spain. In 2003 he came in fourth with a Ford Focus WRC. In 2005 he finished second in the Citroen Xsara WRC and last year saw him in sixth place in a Skoda Fabia WRC. Therefore the Belgian OMV driver is a legitimate candidate for a podium place. Duval's second place in Germany also had another positive consequence since, beside Spain, he will also compete in the OMV Kronos Citroen Xsara WRC in the next tarmac WRC-run in Corsica which will take place one week later. Duval: "I am very happy that I was offered this opportunity. It proves that success is being rewarded. I hope that I will be able to return the favour by reaching further top results."

Already EUR 97.320 in the OMV Move & Help account

Since this year's season of the OMV Kronos Citroen World Rally Team is under the sign of OMV Move & Help, EUR 20 will be donated to OMV Move & Help for each completed special stage kilometre. At the eleven WRC-runs completed so far, Manfred Stohl/Ilka Minor have already taken in 97.320 Euro overall. In Spain further 14.120 Euro are at stake since not only Manfred Stohl will carry the colours of the OMV Kronos Citroen World Rally Team but also once more Francois Duval. Move & Help is the educational program by OMV for over 35.000 children and youths in cooperation with SOS Children's Village, Caritas and UNICEF.

Loeb sets the initial pace for Citroën

Catalunya - Shakedown
vide.gif

Sebastien Loeb set the pace in the shakedown this morning for the works Citroën team ahead of the start of Rally Catalunya. In foggy conditions the Frenchman completed three runs of the 3.98km section, which unusually is actually part of special stage 10 and 14 on leg two of the rally.

"I really need to score some points, and this tarmac event is key," said Loeb who is chasing his third straight win at this event. "I like the Rally. I'm aware that Marcus Grönholm is very fast here and we need to push hard to win him."

As he hopes to shine at home, Subaru's Xevi Pons was quite pleased with his second-fastest time this morning, although he said that the drying roads worked in his favour.

François Duval, who is back to work with the OMV Kronos Citroën Team following his spectacular race in Germany, set the third-fastest run.
"The prospect for this rally is to save the engine with Corsica in mind," he said, adding: "I painted my helmet with Colin McRae's colours as a tribute to him."

Grönholm, who has been getting some tarmac instruction in recent weeks despite the fact he is retiring at the end of the season, was fourth fastest in his BP Ford Focus.
"In the first part of the stage the visibility was not good because of the fog, and the road was a bit slippery," he explained. "That's why we are slower than last year."

Dani Sordo was fifth in line aboard the other Citroën C4. His co-driver Marc Marti explained that
"the shakedown times are slower than last year because of the fog and the road, which was a bit slippery."

Xevi gives Oleguer the ride of his life!

Xevi Pons took FC Barcelona football star Oleguer Presas for a passenger ride at today’s shakedown test. Far from being a gentle exhibition run, Pons set his best time of the day with Oleguer sitting alongside!

“Rally Catalunya – Costa Daurada is very exciting as it’s my home event, and I am looking forward to having a good rally" enthused Pons. "It is great to be competing against Dani Sordo, and to have my friend Oleguer in the car is fantastic, to show him the excitement of a rally car! The Impreza WRC2007 is fast on asphalt, so I can’t wait to start on Friday and feel the excitement of the fans! I’m sure there will be extra adrenaline from the crowds so I’m hoping for a strong points finish.”

Rally Catalunya stage summaries with Phil Mills

The varied asphalt surface of the Spanish round of the WRC makes it a unique challenge

SS1 / SS3 Querol (25.43km)
The first 14km of this stage are really fast run on old asphalt, which can be slippery because of sand and small stones that cover the road. It’s fast and wide, but tricky from 7km to the end when the asphalt becomes even more abrasive. The stage is difficult because of the low level of grip generally. Throughout the rally, the sections that have been resurfaced become very slippery when it rains or there is moisture in the air.

SS2 / SS4 el Montmell (24.14km)
Montmell is a really good stage for us. It’s more like a racing circuit as you need to find the right line. The road is narrow and abrasive at the start until the 15km point and can be very hard for tyres if it’s warm. From 15km to the end of the stage it’s a bit wider and faster.

SS5 El Lloar – La Figuera (22.43km)
El Lloar is a very famous stage that used to be much longer but the organisers have cut it now to just over 22km. It’s a nice stage with a lot of corners for which you need to have the correct line. There will be lots of spectators all along the undulating route.

SS6 Pratdip (26.48km)
The middle 6km is very bumpy and dirty and makes the stage very challenging for this reason. You can lose time a lot of time in this section if you don’t have the right set-up, and it makes tyre choice critical and increases your reliance on the brakes.

SS7 / SS11 Vilaplana (28.33km)
Vilaplana is perhaps the most beautiful of the rally. The wide and fast road goes uphill from the start for 17km and has been resurfaced with brand new tarmac. Any moisture here brings out the oil in the asphalt, making it very tricky. After this it becomes narrow and twisty with some challenging corners. We used to cut the corners a lot in this last section, but with the introduction of concrete barriers on the insides this has been reduced.

SS8 / SS12 Coll del Grau (26.33km)
This is a very long stage I can only describe as the closest thing you will ever get to a racing circuit in rallying. The huge, open flowing roads and very very fast, and we use fifth and sixth gear the whole way. There are two junctions, but otherwise it is flat out the whole way. More concrete has been added here to stop corner cutting, which should help reduce the gravel dragged onto the stage for the second pass.

SS9 / SS13 Margalef – La Palma d’Ebre (15.85km)
The asphalt is different from the rest of the rally, and was relatively new last year. The road can however get really dirty. You can’t cut any corners here which makes the road very narrow, particularly at the start and it’s easy to make a mistake. Halfway through it does become wider and more open but it’s still going to be tricky.

SS10 / SS14 La Serra d’Almos (4.11km)
A brand new stage, but it is actually the shakedown route in reverse. It’s the most slippery stage on the rally, as it has a different surface. It has a granite-like surface rather than asphalt, making it very low grip. If it rains there you have to be very very careful.

SS15 / SS17 Riudecanyes (16.32km)
The first 4km are brand new, open and flowing. After this there is a spectator area, and a few roundabouts which we cross and join the motorway. The old section from last year has been resurfaced, and there is new Armco barrier along the route. It ends with a very steep 12km descent, and you often arrive at the finish with the brakes alight as it’s so fast.

SS16 / SS18 Colldejou (26.51km)
The middle part from the first village to 17km is very challenging. For a 6km stretch the road gets really bumpy and extremely difficult. You could almost set the car up exclusively for this part as it’s so different from the rest! At the beginning and at the end it’s like a racing track – really fast. The middle part is so narrow and dirty that quite it can be very difficult, and is a difficult stage to end the rally on.

Pirelli já ‘aprovou’ primeiro pneu para 2008

90648c00.jpeg
