Loeb sets the initial pace for Citroën
Catalunya - Shakedown
Sebastien Loeb set the pace in the shakedown this morning for the works Citroën team ahead of the start of Rally Catalunya. In foggy conditions the Frenchman completed three runs of the 3.98km section, which unusually is actually part of special stage 10 and 14 on leg two of the rally.
"I really need to score some points, and this tarmac event is key," said Loeb who is chasing his third straight win at this event. "I like the Rally. I'm aware that Marcus Grönholm is very fast here and we need to push hard to win him."
As he hopes to shine at home, Subaru's Xevi Pons was quite pleased with his second-fastest time this morning, although he said that the drying roads worked in his favour.
François Duval, who is back to work with the OMV Kronos Citroën Team following his spectacular race in Germany, set the third-fastest run. "The prospect for this rally is to save the engine with Corsica in mind," he said, adding: "I painted my helmet with Colin McRae's colours as a tribute to him."
Grönholm, who has been getting some tarmac instruction in recent weeks despite the fact he is retiring at the end of the season, was fourth fastest in his BP Ford Focus. "In the first part of the stage the visibility was not good because of the fog, and the road was a bit slippery," he explained. "That's why we are slower than last year."
Dani Sordo was fifth in line aboard the other Citroën C4. His co-driver Marc Marti explained that "the shakedown times are slower than last year because of the fog and the road, which was a bit slippery."
