MF1 Racing hit the track
Six drivers scheduled to test

The coming week will be a busy one for the new MF1 racing squad as Thomas Biagi, Nicky Pastorelli, Jeffrey van Hooydonk, Tiago Monteiro, Christijan Albers and Markus Winkelhock are testing with the team at Jerez.

The team has confirmed Albers as a race driver next season and Pastorelli as the test and reserve driver. Tiago Monteiro has not yet been confirmed as the second driver although he announced some time ago that he will be racing with the team in 2006.

The team, formerly Jordan, is at Jerez this morning where it is running in its new red white and silver livery for the first time. BMW Sauber, Ferrari, Honda, McLaren, Red Bull, Renault, Toyota and Williams are also in action at the Spanish test circuit this week.

Testing resumes tomorrow at Jerez
Most of the teams will be there

After a first week of testing in Barcelona, all the teams (except for Toro Rosso) will return to the track starting tomorrow, this time at Jerez in Spain.

Here is the programme for this long testing session :

Ferrari: 7-10 December and 13-16 December. The four drivers will be there. Only Marc Gene and Luca Badoer will be there for the first four days, then Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa will arrive for the second part of the test (13-16). Schumacher is supposed to test the new Ferrari on the 15 and 16 December.

Honda: 7-9 December and 14-17 December. Anthony Davidson, James Rossiter and Jenson Button will be in action during the first three days.

Midland: 7-11 December. Thomas Biagi, Nicky Pastorelli, Jeffrey van Hooydonk, Tiago Monteiro, Chritijan Albers and Markus Winkelhock are all confirmed for the test.

McLaren: 7-10 December and 13-15 December. Three drivers confirmed for the first three days: Pedro de la Rosa, Alex Wurz and Gary Paffett.

Red Bull: 7-9 December. With Christian Klien and David Coulthard.

Renault: 7-8 December and 14-17 December. Franck Montagny and Heikki Kovalainen on track during the first two days.

BMW Sauber: 8-10 December and 13-15 December. Jacques Villeneuve will be at the wheel for the first three days.

Toyota: 7-15 December. With Olivier Panis, Ralf Schumacher, Ricardo Zonta and Jarno Trulli.

Williams: 7-9 December and 14-16 December. Narain Karthikeyan will drive for the Grove-based team on 7 December with Nico Rosberg. Mark Webber will join Rosberg on 8-9 December.

Also, Bridgestone-equipped teams will have the exclusive use of the track on 11 December to test wet weather tyres. Michelin will do the same exercise on 18 December. There will be only one day off during this long period of testing: Monday, 12 December.

New manufacturers in Formula 1

While there are some who say that the Formula 1 circus will inevitably lose some of the manufacturers in the not-too-distant future, it is worth noting that there are other companies showing signs of interest or at a point in their development where F1 makes a lot of sense. There have been rumours in recent months about GM and Volkswagen while Korea's Hyundai is a firm which is on the move and has F1 ambitions. Korea's biggest car manufacturer was rumoured to have had a Formula 1 prototype engine on its test beds in Korea more than five years ago but economic upsets in Asia stopped that project. Since then cars sales have climbed from 1.5m a year to 3.83m and the company is forecasting sales next year of 4.47m. Production is expanding to the United States and to Eastern Europe and the firm will soon launch a new luxury saloon model which is bound for the US market which will compete head on with Lexus and BMW. It is currently designated BH and the longterm aim appears to be to create a luxury brand similar to Toyota's Lexus or Honda's Acura to distinguish the cars from the cheaper Hyundai models. At the same time the company is launching a new model called the Azera, the first setp in turning Hyundai into a premium brand. Success in motorsport is one way to do this and it is worth noting that Lexus has just announced plans to raise the profile of its racing activities with a two-car entry in the GT2 class of the American Le Mans Series. This will put the cars into direct competition with the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, the Panoz Esperante and the BMW M3. Lexus started out in racing in the GrandAm touring car classes in 2001 and has moved through the ranks and since 2004 has been supplying engines, developed and built by Toyota Racing Development at its headquarters in Tustin, California, to prototype teams. Moving into ALMS is the next step up the ladder. The next step may be F1. At the moment Toyota runs its own team but supplies customer engines to MF1 Racing but there will be a big opportunity for more coverage if a deal is struck between Williams and Toyota for 2007.

A BMW continua a contactar vários pilotos, pois pretende accionar desde as primeiras corridas de 2006 a cláusula que força Villeneuve a atingir resultados mínimos em função e comparativamente ao seu colega de equipa (Heidfeld). Como a BMW prevê que Villeneuve (mantendo o padrão dos últimos anos) não vai conseguir atingir tais mínimos, prepara antecipadamente a sua substituição como piloto efectivo.

Também a Renault vai usar método similar com Fisichella. E se Fisichella não atingir os resultados mínimos estabelecidos pela equipa será substituído por Kovalainen.

Tiago Monteiro em Jerez de la Frontera com o MF1 Toyota
adaptado às novas regras da Formula 1para 2006

O piloto português regressou hoje ao cockpit do seu carro de Formula 1, para ser responsável pelo desenvolvimento e adaptação dos monolugares ex-Jordan EJ15B com os novos propulsores, mais fracos em cilindrada, de 3000cc passaram para 2400cc.

Tiago Monteiro já habituado a estas tarefas na equipa de Alex Schneider, não teve uma jornada como gostaria: “de manhã sentimos vários problemas na admissão de combustível. O carro está muito diferente, é um híbrido com motor V8 que tive de me adaptar. À tarde foi a caixa de velocidades que nos deu problemas, o que me obrigou a contentar-me com uma dezena de voltas lançadas, por isso longe do que seria normal alcançar”.

O piloto português cumpriu com os objectivos da equipa Midland, mas explicou a sua principal dificuldade: “Nesta altura temos menos 120 cavalos com o motor V8 do que na última época, o que é uma considerável diferença. Tive de andar sempre com o carro muito pesado, com oitenta litros de combustível para não correr o risco de ficar sem pressão e perdermos tempo”.


O Rookie do Ano de 2005, despertou sempre na equipa uma grande atenção, e espera que o trabalho que está a desenvolver com Christjan Albers seja fundamental para a equipa evoluir: “Principalmente nós os dois, os pilotos oficiais de 2006 temos de conseguir aproveitar estes testes o melhor possível. Depois do final da sessão os mecânicos vão tentar resolver o problema técnico do meu carro, que obrigou a perder parte do treino matinal”, concluiu Tiago Monteiro.

Os testes continuam amanhã para Tiago Monteiro naquele traçado espanhol.

O esforço da Super Aguri em reunir a aprovação unânime das dez equipes da F-1 para poder participar do próximo Mundial esbarra na batida de pé da Midland. De acordo com o site "F1i.com", Aguri Suzuki só não tem a assinatura da MF1.

A FIA não aceitou a inscrição da segunda escuderia da Honda — especula-se que pelo não-pagamento da caução de US$ 48 milhões. Suzuki pegou o telefone e pediu que Max Mosley prorrogasse o prazo e que lhe desse uma segunda chance. O presidente da FIA permitiu.

O caso remete aos idos de 1993, quando a Williams perdeu o prazo para fazer a inscrição naquele Mundial. As demais concorrentes tiveram de acordar para que participasse. Agora, a Midland vê a Super Aguri como sua principal concorrente de fundo do grid. E o regulamento diz que só as dez primeiras do campeonato dividem a grana vinda dos direitos de imagem.

A arma da Super Aguri é já ter se comprometido a assinar o novo Pacto da Concórdia, deixando Bernie Ecclestone com largo sorriso. E isso fará o homem que toca os negócios da F-1 ter uma conversa com o grupo de Alex Shnaider.

Tiago Monteiro tem que se mentalizar e preparar para este ano que vai ser muito mais duro que o anterior em termos de comparação com o colega de equipa. Albers é um piloto rapidíssimo (que me impressionou no campeonato 2004 do DTM onde foi vice-campeão e primeiro dos piltos Mercedes) como o demonstrou na Minardi onde ridicularizou a seu bel prazer os colegas de equipa, pondo-lhes em cima diferenças de tempo que faziam suspeitar que de outro carro se tratava e não de um Minardi.

O segundo dia de trabalho de Tiago Monteiro com a Midland em Jerez de la Frontera foi bastante produtivo e importante para a equipa na recolha de informações preciosas. Cada piloto com a sua missão, e as 70 voltas que hoje cumpriu ao circuito andaluz, já foram bastante mais produtivas do que as realizadas no primeiro dia.

“Estou satisfeito com o trabalho realizado hoje, especialmente porque ultrapassámos os problemas que ontem me obrigaram a estar nas boxes durante muito tempo. Andei bastante com os dois carros (70 voltas), para comparar o motor V10 e o novo V8, mas concentrei-me mais no segundo com o objectivo de encontrar uma boa afinação, o que é muito complicado, pois o chassis já é bastante antigo, e este é um carro híbrido”, explicou o piloto português.

“O meu plano de treino foi realizado e gostei de trabalhar com todo o staff novo que veio para a equipa, como o James Key, novo director técnico, entre outros. Só volto ao cockpit no Domingo, para testes de pneus com a pista molhada artificialmente. Temos a consciência que há muito trabalho a realizar para podermos ser competitivos em situação de corrida”, lembrou Tiago Monteiro, depois de mais um dia de intenso trabalho técnico.

De la Rosa fastest on Jerez day three

The track action continued at Jerez de la Frontera on December 9th with 13 drivers from eight teams at work on the Spanish circuit. McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa topped the times with a best of 1:17.293 and fellow team tester Alex Wurz was ninth quickest. De la Rosa used the Mercedes V10 engine and Wurz the V8 and their work focused on tyre comparisons and engine and set up development.

Nico Rosberg was the fastest V8 runner, his Williams second on the time sheet, just under two seconds down on de la Rosa. Mark Webber was also at work and was fifth on the final day of the team's three-day schedule. Rosberg will be back behind the wheel on Sunday to take part in a wet tyre test.

"We've again made good progress with all the mechanical components and systems checks on the interim FW27C, while Bridgestone have also moved forward since last week's test in Barcelona," said technical director Sam Michael.

Jenson Button was the lead Honda on the time sheet in third, and test driver Anthony Davidson was 10th overall. Once again both drivers ran the V8 engine and worked on tyre and engine evaluation on the last day of the team's test.

"Our test programme in Jerez this week has been extremely successful," said chief test engineer Mark Ellis. "The reliability of both Concept cars has been excellent which has allowed us to complete all of our intended activity. We have made solid progress in our understanding of the required solutions for the 2006 season."

Jarno Trulli continued for Toyota and was fourth fastest, while tester Ricardo Zonta replaced Ryan Briscoe and recorded the sixth quickest time. Tyres and set up were the focus for the day, although Zonta lost some time due to a fuel system problem.

"We are still at a very early stage in our relationship with Bridgestone and we are on a steep learning curve to find out how to get the most out of the tyres," Trulli said in regard to the new partnership. "Jerez is a fine track to work on that and I'm confident that we will make considerable progress over the winter."

Jacques Villeneuve was again the sole BMW Sauber driver present and was seventh. He was slightly hampered by a hydraulic leak in the morning but the problem was soon rectified. The Canadian worked on engine and systems checks and was satisfied progress is being made.

Christijan Albers and Tiago Monteiro were on track for MF1 Racing and were eighth and 11th fastest respectively. They shared duties in the EJ15B V10 and the interim EJ15B V8 and also worked on tyres. Albers continues tomorrow in the interim chassis and the team will also try out Markus Winkelhock, Roman Rusinov and Fabrizio del Monte.

"We have been able to add a lot more mileage to the Toyota V8 which has once again run very well today," said technical director James Key. "We overcame the issues we had yesterday which allowed us to add kilometres to the interim car. We still have a few issues to resolve but in general we are happy."

Team tester Marc Gené was solo for Ferrari after Luca Badoer crashed on the first two days and was withdrawn from the test. Gené clocked the 12th fastest time, working on the V8 engine in the F2004M chassis, and also tyre testing. The Spaniard continues on Saturday for the Scuderia.

O espanhol Pedro Martínez de la Rosa foi o mais rápido nesta sexta (9) em Jerez de la Frontera, nos testes coletivos que a F-1 realiza visando o Mundial 2006. O piloto da McLaren foi um dos três que andou com os motores V10 nas 77 voltas que completou ao longo do dia.

Nico Rosberg surpreendeu e pôs a Williams em segundo. Com os Cosworth V8, foi mais de 1s4 mais lento que De la Rosa. Jenson Button terminou em terceiro.

Ricardo Zonta foi o único brasileiro a ir para a pista. Ficou na sexta posição. A surpresa foi Tiago Monteiro que, guiando a MF1 motores V8 da Toyota, terminou em oitavo, à frente de Alexander Wurz (McLaren) e Marc Gené (Ferrari).
