Já passei uma tarde a conduzir uma! [^]

Infelizmente não me apanhei em estrada aberta com ela, e em cidade é tudo menos explosiva. Mas pode ser que um dia tenha uma oportunidade melhor

Subaru Technical International (Masaru Katsurada, CEO), a division of Subaru and Fuji Heavy Industries will release the latest version of their WRX STi, the S203, on January 11, 2005.

The S203is based on STi’s concept of a “global, pure sports sedan.” Using all the research gained from WRC competition, STi has built an Impreza WRX STi with better reflexes and even more comfort. The S203 is designed to be a joy to drive fast on any road, anywhere in the world.

The engine in the S203 brings with it even greater power compared to the WRX STi and this extra power is a result of a new, exclusive turbocharger, Sport ECU, balanced pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft, and each engine is hand-assembled.

The S203 chassis uses exclusive 4-way adjustable struts and aluminum rear lateral links with pillow-block bushings as well as an exclusive rear stabilizer bar with special brackets. These new engine and suspension parts give the new S203 a feeling of high power and a solid, “stuck to the road surface” driving experience.

We have added special exterior touches that are designed to offer better appearance and greater function – a carbon fiber under tray front spoiler lip, a new 2-way adjustable rear wing, and 18-inch forged-aluminum BBS wheels.

We have equipped the interior with Recaro reclining front bucket sport seats covered in gray Alcantara material. With the S203, we have pursued building a sports sedan that not only offers first class performance and functionality, but also the feeling of high-class materials and true quality throughout.

          SUMMARY OF EQUIPMENT

          1. Engine :

          - Improved for more power and torque by using S203-specific tuning equipment. Emphasis on strong, smooth torque band that extends into upper rpm range. Results are 320-hp and 422-nm of torque.

          - Turbo is larger with has more blades and uses a ball-bearing turbine shaft. Turbine blades are re-shaped to provide less lag at low rpms and more power at high rpms.

          - Engine management is provided by an all-new Sport ECU.

          - New, flex-resistant silicone connectors are utilized for the intercooler and air intake side of the turbocharger. These provide better engine response under full boost as well as longer life.

          - For better high-rpm rotation, smoothness, and longevity, pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft are balanced and each engine is hand-assembled.

          - A new, higher-flowing and more efficient catalytic converter is utilized.

          - A better flowing muffler is used to decrease exhaust resistance. It is made from titanium for a 5-kg weight savings.

          - Engine uses an air-cooled engine oil cooler for increased engine longevity and performance under high stress driving conditions.

          2. Chassis:

          - Chassis is upgraded to match increase in engine performance. The excellent stability and handling of the regular STi is retained, yet we have added an amount of increased adaptability to comfortably handle any road condition, even winding roads with variable surfaces.

          - Shocks are 4-way adjustable for damping, giving the ability to provide a comfortable ride in slow city driving as well as a firm and controlled ride for high speed driving.

          - The adjustable shocks give the driver options for choosing different handling characteristics for different road conditions.

          - Spring rates are increased 50% and the ride height has been reduced by 15mm. These changes provide quicker reflexes and more roll resistance.

          - Increased handling stability and control are provided by new aluminum lateral link with pillow-block bushings.

          - A thicker rear anti-roll bar with special brackets is used to offer better handling.

          - We use Pirelli P-ZERO CORSA tires for excellent grip in dry and wet weather and also for longer life and better control.

          - We’ve fit the S203 with 18-inch forged-aluminum BBS wheels that are 6-kg lighter than the 17-inch wheels found on the base model STi.

          - Exclusive outer-ventilated brake rotors are used for increased brake-cooling and over all better braking efficiency.

          3. Exterior/Interior:

          - We’ve improved the function of the exterior and interior by pursuing the best and sportiest materials available.

          - Straight-line high-speed stability is improved with a carbon fiber front lip spoiler that reduces front-end lift and keeps the tires better planted to the road surface.

          - Attached under the front lip spoiler is a strip of rubber that additionally limits airflow under the body of the car and also minimizes damage to the spoiler should the front lip spoiler contact the road surface.

          - An exclusive 2-way adjustable rear wing spoiler is used to reduce rear-end lift and to keep the tires better planted to the road surface.

          - We have added special reclining Recaro front sport seats with gray Alcantara center surfaces to help keep driver and passenger firmly held in place during spirited driving. These seats are constructed with carbon fiber shells and therefore are lighter and stronger than the seats offered in the base STi.

          - Gray Alcantara trim is used on door panels.

          - The color black is used in the interior to convey a feeling of sportiness and consistency. Black floor mats are sued, and a black soft-feel coating is used on the center console, gauge pod, and side bench grille.

          - Body colors are Crystal Gray metallic, Pure White, Solid Red, and WR Blue mica.

          - S203s come with a silver mesh-type front grille.

          - Equipped with S203 emblems, front and rear.

          - Equipped with a 260 km/hr speedometer.

          - Equipped with an aluminum shift boot trim ring with serial number.

          4. Other Equipment:

          - Driver-controlled center differential with auto-mode.

          - Front helical limited-slip differential.

          - Mechanical rear limited-slip differential.

          - Rear anti-roll bar bracket with ball joint.

          - Power steering oil cooler with cooling fins.

          - HID low-beam lamps.

          - Tinted windows.

          - Heater controls with metallic ring.

          - S203 plate and serial number for engine bay.

          - Fog lamp covers with STi decals.

          - Exclusive red hazard switch.

          - Suede owner’s manual cover.

          - Exclusive leather key chain with S203 serial number.

Subaru plans to offer a limited number of S203 Imprezas. The total production will 555 vehicles, and production will run from January 2005 to March 2005.

Pricing (including sales tax) starts at 4,609,500 yen.

                  Subaru Legacy 3.0R Spec. B - O senhor discreto

A suspensão é nestas alturas demasiado branda.

Road Test Review: 2005 Subaru WRX STi

So, here we are - back again. Back to the pony car wars of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s where Mustangs, Camaros and Firebirds fought it out on US streets and race tracks all around the country. But this time around, we’re not talking pony cars (alas, only the Mustang survives), but rather the rally car import wars. 2003 saw the start with the Evo and STi hitting the streets. In this gloves-off match, Mitsubishi unleashed numerous new versions to try to take command of the landscape, from dedicated stripped track-car versions to the higher-powered and more well-equipped MR model.

For 2005, it may at first appear that Subaru hasn’t done much to step up to the plate - after all, the original car came with far more techno-wizardry than its Evo competition. In fact, the 2004 STi that hit the US market came with features that many debated would never make it to our shores, bringing us items such as the Driver’s Controlled Center Differential (DCCD). This may have led many of us to thinking there was little Subaru was going to do to bring the game up a notch, as the overall package was already impressive. The good news for everyone is that even though the exterior skin and marketing for the car have barely changed, some very important pieces actually have been changed.

                        Interior Changes

One of the most noticeable changes for the ‘05 Impreza WRX STi is the significantly revamped interior accommodations that many other Subaru models receive as well. This is probably the one part of the GM/Fuji Heavy Industries relationship that has really paid off. Incorporating the Saab 9-2x interior into numerous Subaru models, including the STi, has created a significantly nicer and more refined interior that complements well the special trim specific to the STi model.

To put this into perspective, when we originally saw the Evolution at its release and compared it to the soon-to-be released STi, the interior (aside from the more supportive seats) on the Evolution was deplorable. If tracking the car, the issue might be a moot one, but for those driving these cars regularly, it’s like picking up a cheap, rip-off replica toy that breaks within five minutes, compared to a genuine, well-built toy. Well, the 2005 STi changes make the previous generation’s look almost as cheap.

What’s so different? The entire center console is completely revised using a cleaner, flowing design that meshes with the lower gear-shift area. Gone are the sticking, pop-out cupholders that plagued Imprezas of the past. Instead, they have been relocated to the right of the emergency brake lever. In fact, rear passengers finally get cupholders as well, found to the rear of the center console. The e-brake was thus moved inward towards the driver. While this now allows you to have a more clear path to the e-brake and shifter if there are drinks in the holder, it does somewhat force you to tuck your arm inward into a somewhat uncomfortable position.

The HVAC controls were also revised accordingly. No longer is there a play between multi-colored plastics that left a lot to be desired visually, but rather a continuous silver tone through the center console. However, we weren’t too ecstatic with the coloring chosen for the center console and the labels printed on it. On sunny days, the console can be difficult to read due to the glare from the shiny silver plastic. Combine that with the small lights on the HVAC controls, and even the controls can be hard to read in order to determine whether something is active. The A/C light was particularly hard to see on one sunny day. The HVAC system, though, does offer some new features, including automatic directional control, in addition to last year’s addition of automatic fan control.

Some of the new details are also where the car stands out in comparison. For instance, the center console’s air vents now have a chromed insert on the adjustment piece. The red stitching is now even more widespread and in the case of the steering wheel, goes the full 360 degrees, rather than just the lower half as in the ‘04 model. Speaking of the steering wheel, the ‘05 received a revised wheel that is jet black, except for the blazing pink STi emblem in the center. The wheel feels much better than the original, despite its initial rather bland appearance.

Even the doors received some revisions, getting more of the blue faux-suede material. The material now covers the armrest and an extended door section above it. Unfortunately, the controls layered on top look even cheaper with the blue faux-suede behind them, including the relocated electronic mirror adjustment.

Taking a look up towards the rear-view mirror leads you to notice further revisions. The rearview mirror no longer has the visor to flip down to block the sun in the center, but rather the glass has changed to include a darkened area to alleviate that need. The rear-view mirror has thus been lowered slightly and visibility seemed slightly better than the ‘04 model. The regular visors also have changed - no longer being a cheap cloth, but rather a material similar to the new premium cloth found in many Subarus.

While originally we thought the interior of the ‘04 STi wasn’t that bad, all these little details have really made a difference. While the car may still not have a dash-stroker’s kind of interior, it no longer feels like you are driving an economy-based car, at least from the inside.

                        The Exterior

While the interior received a significant makeover, the exterior only received modest updates. The general styling, while much better than the previous Impreza generation, still lacks a classic face, and any attempts to address the situation may have to wait until the next revision comes out worldwide in 2006.

Only a few styling cues really changed on the ‘05. Namely, a more aggressive looking STi badge comes with the car – pink layered on a black background, rather than the silver on a pink background. This makes for a much more striking and attractive badge that really grabs your attention.

Another change came in the form of a hard crease along the rear wheel well. This was made to accommodate the slightly wider rear wheels (with the same size tires). The crease simply looks a tad awkward, but that’s tolerable, as it gives the ability to safely run wider tires akin to the Evo.

                        The Real Changes

The interior makeover has really stolen the limelight. And that’s understandable, to a point. But, this is a car for whicht most folks aren’t all that concerned about interior trim bits. What everyone wants to know is what Subaru has done to take on the sharp, tack-like handling of the Evo that everyone raves about.

To start, Subaru has installed a completely revised steering rack. They didn’t make it a faster ratio, rather, they altered the way it mounts to a cannon-mount and created a somewhat better steering feel. While the feel was not significantly improved over the previous model, incidents of bump steer seemed greatly reduced. This allows you to no longer feel the need to hold on to the wheel very tightly in order to get the car back on the road after a nasty bump. The car does still suffer from tramlining, but that’s mainly due to its aggressive tires.

Further improvements include a revised wheel hub with a changed bolt pattern (from 5x100 to 5x114.3), supposedly to add strength. Some main benefits of course come with the increased track and the wider rims that should help improve feel and stability. The car also received a new aero-underbody for high-speed stability.

But perhaps the changes that will make the most difference are the those done to the suspension and differentials. Gone is the Suretrac front limited slip differential. The unit has been replaced by a faster-acting helical-type differential. The DCCD received some updates as well, including new sensors and programming that promise to improve handling. The rear crossmember has been changed to a new 3-point unit, while the rear lateral links were replaced with aluminum units. Combine this with a few settings adjustments on the suspension, and you have a significantly changed setup. But how does it feel?

Well, the 2004 STi could best be described, when thrown into a corner, that it would push you out and then just start pulling you back in. It was more or less of an odd feeling initially, as the Suretrac differential took some time to kick in, giving you this strange sensation (and perhaps a bit of fright, wondering whether you’d make the turn) followed by a fair amount of feedback while the car tried to pull you through the turn. But even with the differential, the car would like to understeer significantly, even though the degree was easily controlled by the driver.

The 2005 STi completely changes that feeling. Subaru first took a common aftermarket modification to the ‘04 in upgraded lateral links and made aluminum versions to help reduce understeer. Then they threw in the quicker-acting front LSD, a little programming, and what do you get? Simply put, the car pulls through turns and adjusts much easier and feels far more agile than its older brother. The unsettling feedback one would feel in the ‘04 from the steering and front LSD is gone, and the turn-in is just that much better in the ‘05. The car simply pulls and wants to be flung into a corner headstrong.

Combine these changes with the updated DCCD, which now utilizes a yaw sensor, and you get a much smarter center differential. No, folks, this is not an Active Yaw Control (AYC) setup such as found in certain Evos, but the new information going to the computer seems to be just enough to aid in altering the car’s dynamics and make the car feel that much sharper and controlled going through transitions and rolling through numerous turns.

Simply put, the car is almost as confidence inspiring as the Evo is when it comes to whipping around corners. The car still isn’t razor sharp, but for the shear sake of drivability, the STi still has the Evo beat hands down. On the track, the contest still is very close, and it’s probably still more up to the driver more so than the actual car.

The 2005 Impreza WRX STi has come back and addressed numerous questions, as well as a few we never asked. The GM involvement, although despised by some enthusiasts, has already begun to prove its worth. The cars are definitely beginning to show signs of improvement in interior design, but that is only part of the equation. As Subaru continually improves the car, whether it be software upgrades, a little bit more aluminum, or just beefed up components, the bar is continually raised in the value driven sports sedan marketplace - excuse me - import rally car marketplace.

And let’s hope that, just like the pony car wars that started 30 years ago, the market will continue to support the continued one-upmanship between the STi and Evo for many years to come. Should yield some pretty neat machinery, don’t you think?

                          in its first Nürburgring challenge

                          2005 NÜRBURGRING 24h-RENNEN
                          11 May 2005

SUBARU World Rally Team, SWRT’s WRC French driver, Stéphanne Sarrazin has participated in the traditional endurance race “Nürburgring 24 hours race” on 7th and 8th of May 2005. He shared IMPREZA WRX STI of an endurance version prepared by Prova Racing Division in the race with 3 Japanese drivers. The trouble-free IMPREZA despite of the first challenge, finely ran 24 hours and was 2nd in the A6 class, 14th overall at the flag.

                          Start>>
The 24 hours race in Nürburgring started at 15:00 on 7th May 2005. However big drops of rain wetted the track surface just before the rolling start’s flag was waved and the race started at 15:20 practically. The starting driver was Kazuo Shimizu who left the grid that was 10th in the class and 42nd overall.
Shimizu could make the most of Symmetrical AWD System on the 1st lap among the field greatly confused by the weather and came back to the line at the 24th position passing as many as 18cars. He took better position without any trouble and came up to 21st on lap 5. After Shimizu finished his stint of 6 laps, Stéphanne was at the wheel. The car No.67 IMPREZA became 7th in the class and 22nd overall at 17:00, after 2 hours from the start.

                          Comment from Stéphanne Sarrazin
“It was my first Nürburgring experience and my first impression was that the course was well built. Unlike the other tracks, it was similar to a public road and fit for IMPREZA, I think. Also the course had a long lap and included sections of down-hill and hill-climb. It was exciting for me to feel like enjoying a combination of rally and race. I am driving IMPREZA WR car in WRC in this season. This IMPREZA here has also a low center of gravity and an excellent symmetrical AWD which has good turn-in ability that is the original goodness of production car. Additionally the car was very neutrally conditioned, quick and had enough power. I was surprised at the good birth of IMPREZA again during the race in Nürburgring.”

                          After 6 hours>>
It was raining off and on. IMPREZA No.67 ran stably and once brought the team 9th overall position after the routine pit stops. After 6hours passed and the car came to the pit earlier than scheduled for a change of hub on the lap. The car's position was lowered by that pit stop however 7hours after the start, at 22:00 it was 4th in the class and 29th overall.

                          After 12 hours>>
At 23:20, Shimizu returned for the 5th pit stop after his stint and Stéphanne Sarrazin took his place. He chose new slick tyres. When the date was changed at 0:00, Sarrazin overtook the other contenders and came up to the 23rd position overall. It retained the 4th position in the class but the car No.59 M3 GTR was just 1'16" behind at the 3rd place. Immediately before 1:00am, Sarrazin came back to the pit and Toshihiro Yoshida seated for his stint. The rain has stopped completely and the track surface was almost dry. But some cars were abandoned here and there on the track by accidents or troubles. The atmospheric temperature was 0ºC. In the meantime, IMPREZA could run without any problem and was 3rd in the A6 class and 18th overall at 3:00am.

                          After 18 hours>>
At 5:00am the sky was growing light between clouds. After 15 hours from the start, at 5:57 Shimizu drove down to the pit keeping the 3rd place in the class, 18th overall. Stéphanne was at the wheel and drove the car making its pace in the morning sunshine. It became cloudy after 7 o'clock and has begun to sprinkle sometimes. At 9:00am, 18 hours after the start, the car No.22 BMW M3 stopped on the Grand Prix circuit by a mechanical trouble, which was good condition and 1st in the class until just after 8:00am. Accordingly the car No.59 BMW M3 GTR became the leading car, but the car No.67 IMPREZA was only 22 seconds off the pace. On lap 94, car No.59 M3 GTR returned to its pit. No.67 IMPREZA took the top by seizing the chance. IMPREZA then returned to its pit on lap 95 keeping the top in the class and 14th overall. The driver switched from Toshihiro Yoshida to Kumi Sato but the tyre type remained shallow grooved. IMPREZA had to hand over the leading position of the class to the car No.50 NSX during the stop, however it was aiming at running steady to regain it during the remaining 6 hours.

                          Finish>>
At 9:30am Kumi Sato left the pitlane when the remaining duration was less than 6 hours. IMPREZA was on the same lap as No.50 NSX that was the top in the class and the difference was approx. 4’10”. Around 10:30 am there was a hailstone about 5mm attacked the track. Sato was in a mess as her visibility was lost in white but managed to control the car to bring it to its pit one lap earlier. Then Shimizu chose deep grooved wet weather tyres for the first time in the race and left the pitlane. But only after 30 minutes the sun has begun to shine. At 13:42, Yoshida was behind the wheel at the last pit stop and chose shallow grooved wet weather tyres as the weather was not predictable till the end of the race. It approached the finale.

At 15:00, more than 180,000 spectators were astir with the excitement of the finale and the sounds of air horns arose here and there. The position of BMW works that was 1st overall could be found by the helicopter’s location hovering over it. Finally the BMWs won the overall victory for 18 times, 2 years consecutively and finished 1st and 2nd in this Nürburgring race. In the field led by the BMWs, there was No.67 IMPREZA driven by Yoshida! The IMPREZA took part in the 24 hours race for the first time, ran 124 laps and successfully finished 2nd in the class and 14th overall. The result testified IMPREZA’s good birth like a production car brought up in Nürburgring. Stéphanne Sarrazin drove the car carefully although he kept running with quicker lap times in any condition and contributed significantly to the team's strategy. It should be worth mentioning that IMPREZA completed the duration of 24hours among the Nürburgring regular contenders in spite of its first challenge and ran trouble-free through a severe forest course of Eifel plateau over 25km per lap.

                          Comment from Stéphanne Sarrazin
“It was a good race. Despite of the normal specifications we could achieve 6th - 7th best lap time among more than 200 cars. Of course we wanted to be the class winner, but I think it was a very good experience both for drivers including me and team staffs. It was a test for the new aerodynamics in this race, and we could know that its stability was excellent at high speed. I want to show good performance also in WRC next.”

                                          apesar de mais dinâmica.
Não sei se é apenas das fotos, mas o desenho dos faróis não parece encaixar-se muto bem com o resto da carroçaria!
