Ford-based EUCD architecture to stick around for awhile

Land Rover is in the midst of a major product revamp and new details are starting to emerge about the company's future lineup.
Car & Driver is reporting that future models will be underpinned by the EUCD architecture - that is currently used on the Freelander 2/LR2 and Range Rover Evoque - as well as the lightweight D7 architecture which underpins the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The latter platform is highly flexible and will reportedly underpin the next-generation Discovery and Defender.

The Discovery will likely be launched next year and is expected to move upmarket. The Defender, on the other hand, has reportedly been delayed as the model's target audience hated the DC100 concept so it is being redesigned.More interestingly, the Evoque Cabrio concept might not go into production as originally expected. Instead, the company could launch an Evoque with a retractable panoramic glass roof.

Hum...

Por mim, até concordo que redesenhem a coisa, como tinha dito anteriormente, o concept que apresentaram já entrava em demasia no mundo do "style & posh".
Faltava alguma da rudeza e look no-bullshits do Defender original.
Precisam de conseguir um resultado semelhante ao Wrangler. Que tem imagem distinta e já icónica, parecendo sempre pronto para todo o serviço, com a forma a evocar a funcionalidade do Willys original, com os requisitos estéticos a virem bem lá atrás na lista de prioridades.

Arriscaria dizer que o Defender tem de ser um pouco como o Unimog!
Tem de ser abordado como se de uma ferramenta se tratasse. Funcionalidade e ergonomia e acho que chegarão a um resultado convincente, mesmo sendo anty-style.

Land Rover is considering building a baby SUV. It would be sold across the world and make the brand the premium contender in a market niche that is set to rocket in popularity.

Land Rover’s global brand director, John Edwards, confirmed recently that such 
a model is being examined by the firm’s product planners.
“I can see a sub-compact SUV working in all markets… and I don’t see a reason not to do it in the future,” he said. However, Edwards also cautioned that he has yet to see a convincing proposition for the new model.

If it gets the green light, the new Land Rover is expected to be about four metres long (30cm shorter than today’s Evoque). Some sources say it would be based on a bespoke platform likely to be shared with JaguarLand Rover’s Indian owner, Tata, and new Chinese partner Chery.

Indian sources say Tata engineers are leading the work on a new generation of diesel and petrol engines sized at 1.4 and 1.6 litres, which could be used in the baby SUV. The 1.6 could also be used by Jaguar.
Pricing for the baby Land Rover is expected to start at £18,000. That will put it at the top end of the segment, making it more expensive than theMini Countryman and slotting under the next-generation Freelander, which is likely to be priced from £23,000. Entry models are likely to be front-wheel drive.

The baby Land Rover’s styling is expected to be a further development of the theme launched by the DC100 concept cars. It will also be influenced by the look of the all-new Defender, which, Autocar understands, has already been signed off for production.

According to figures 
from analysts at Credit Suisse, global sales of B-segment SUVs from established manufacturers are set to rocket from last year’s total of one million units to more than 2.5 million units in 2020. It’s a niche that Land Rover cannot ignore.

The new SUV could be the first Land Rover to be built entirely abroad. The company is reported to be “actively” investigating sourcing a model solely from India.
Tata’s Del Sehmar has been quoted as saying that JLR has “ambitious” plans to expand production globally.
JLR is investing £1.1 billion in a new Chinese factory with Chery. It has also revealed plans to source aluminium from Saudi Arabia and is working on a project to press panels and eventually build cars there. South America is being eyed up for a production project, too.

“We have a lot of aspirations for India,” said Edwards, “but that is all they are at present. Our expansion plans are very clear. We have a joint venture in China, which is approved, so we are working hard with Chery and then looking at three priorities to expand our global footprint: India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.
“We continue to look at opportunities for a smaller, cheaper Land Rover but — if we did it — it certainly wouldn’t be exclusive to India. It would have to work in other markets.”

The firm is looking at 
“all opportunities to grow 
Land Rover”, he said. “The SUV segment is the fastest-expanding sector. There’s room for crossovers, pick-ups, small sub-compact SUVs. We are definitely looking at opportunities, but we haven’t decided yet on small cars.

“The DNA of the brand is a car that can go from A to B in any conditions, so that means every car we plan will be a global one. But a baby Land Rover has got to work for the business as well as the brand, and I’m still waiting to see a business proposition that works. I need to be convinced.”

HOJE É DIA DE FESTA! O ANIVERSARIANTE CHAMA-SE...


Para a história da indústria automóvel e, muito em particular do todo-o-terreno, o dia 17 de Junho de 1970 ficou gravado por um acontecimento cuja grandeza é hoje, volvidos 43 anos, reconhecida como enorme. Foi nesse dia que a Land Rover lançou o seu segundo modelo de sempre: o Range Rover. Desde então, o modelo já atravessou quatro gerações e foram produzidas na fábrica de Solihull, nos arredores de Birmingham, cerca de um milhão e 100 mil unidades. Na imagem, captada em Marrakech no Outono do ano passado, vemos um dos novos Range Rover L-405 ao lado de um dos primeiro protótipos rolantes, de 1969, que para confundir os "espiões" e outros curiosos, foi usado em testes na via pública ostentando uma marca que jamais existiu, a Velar!









OS "VELAR" AINDA CIRCULAM POR AÍ...
Não foram feitos muitos Velar, esses Range Rover de pré-produção, que andaram a fazer os últimos ensaios, no final de 1969 e no princípio de 1970. No entanto, sobreviveram várias dessas unidades de testes, que continuam mesmo em condições de circulação e a uso. O Range Rover branco desta imagem é um desses protótipos e foi fotografado em Setembro do ano passado em Londres, precisamente à porta do palácio onde estava a decorrer a enorme festa de lançamento do Range Rover L-405.










O PRIMEIRO RANGE ROVER FOI O NÚMERO 3. É ESTE AZUL...
O primeiro Range Rover de produção em série é este azul, que em Outubro do ano passado fomos encontrar num magnifico palácio nos arredores de Marrakech, estacionado diante de um dos novos L405 e de um dos Velar sobreviventes, que se vê ao fundo, em segundo plano na imagem. Nesta noite, alguém colidiu contra o guarda-lamas traseiro esquerdo deste Range Rover azul com um dos carros eléctricos usados para as deslocações no palácio, que é um dos mais exclusivos hotéis de Grande Luxo desta cidade imperial de Marrocos. Os responsáveis pela Land Rover estavam, claro, aborrecidos, pois este veículo é uma de museu! E tem uma história muito curiosa, pois embora tenha sido realmente o primeiro Range Rover de produção a deixar a linha de montagem, a verdade é que se trata do chassis número 3, cujo fabrico foi adiantado para ser entregue aos fotógrafos que registaram a primeira sessão de imagens, para a apresentação à imprensa internacional, que teve lugar na Cornualha, no Reino Unido. Os fotógrafos elegeram esse azul como a cor ideal para as primeiras fotos oficiais...

O adeus a uma lenda: Land Rover Defender será descontinuado a meio da década


Land Rover has confirmed reports that it will stop making the Defender SUV, built since 1948 with little changes. “The Defender will go out of production by the middle of the decade due to legislative reasons,” a Land Rover spokesman toldAutonews Europe.The legislative reasons may have something to do with safety and CO2 emissions, but the spokesman declined to comment. The Defender will be succeeded by an all-new vehicle, but details about it are scarce and its name is yet unknown. Land Rover doesn’t say when the replacement model will go on sale, but analysts at Bernstein Research believe it won’t go on sale earlier than 2019.

Why so late? Because of the “lack of volume and weak business case”, according to Bernstein analyst Max Warburton. The successor to the Land Rover Defender was widely expected to be influenced by the DC100 concept, shown in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

However, Warburton says that the steel-based vehicle has been cancelled and the brand is now looking at the possibility of a more expensive aluminum vehicle that would use the current Range Rover platform. That vehicle may even break the tradition and be built in India.
Since its launch in 1948, the Defender racked up 2 million sales and helped establish Land Rover’s reputation as an off-road vehicle specialist. However, current sales are small, with only 561 Defenders delivered in Europe in the first eight months of this year.

Allright, podes ter razão, a marca tomou de facto o nome do produto.
Por este Portugal a dentro é muito comum chamar Jipe a um discovery, Patrol, etc.

Chamemos-lhe o nome certo então: Todo-o-terreno.

TATA vai ter SUV baseado no Freelander depois deste ser substituído este ano

The current Land Rover Freelander is set to live on as the basis for a new Tata SUV, when the outgoing SUV is replaced later this year.

When production of the current Freelander ends by the end of 2014 to make way for a new model in the Discovery family, some of its tooling will be shipped to India and its L359 platform used to underpin a new Tata SUV, according to Autocar’s sister publication Autocar India.

The Economic Times of India reports that a team of 45 engineers are already working on the new SUV, with a targeted launch date of 2016. Around half of the current Freelander is set to be changed for the Tata SUV, and the new model will be built to meet Jaguar Land Rover’s quality standards.
The new SUV is codenamed Q5. It is set to be a five-seater with a seven-seat option, and be priced at around £20,000.

That’s around double the price of the firm’s slow-selling current range-topping crossover, the Aria, with the Q5 marking Tata’s first entry into the premium market. It’s also the first example of platform sharing between Tata and JLR since the former bought the latter from Ford six years ago.

A JLR spokesman said the firm did not comment on future products when contacted by Autocar.
