Can Saab's turbo tornado run with the German sixes

Almost everyone knows that the horse-drawn carriage was the progenitor of the convertible automobile. In fact all cars of the end of the 19th century and early part of the 20th century were convertibles. The final death-knell of the convertible was dealt by the arrival of the Dodge Brothers Victory 6 with its revolutionary all-steel monocoque body affixed to a normal ladder type chassis.

The convertible has since become the playground for designers who have taken the shape to ever exciting heights. In fact the convertible became the powder-puff segment of the automobile market. However with its inherent weakness due to the lack of its tin-top it has lagged in suitable stiffness without its structural support and stiffness.

Back in the early days the convertible body fixed to a ladder chassis greatly assisted in overcoming the inherent weakness and twist of the convertible body. In fact the arrival of the truly modern monocoque without the ladder chassis led to a negative feature known as 'scuttle-shake' and 'chassis-flex'. To counter this, manufacturers began reinforcing the chassis with beams to strengthen it - and thereby added to the overall weight of the car compared to its sedan sibling. However in the process of achieving more stiffness some dynamic performance was lost.

Any arch-car-enthusiast schooled in the ways of top road holding will discern the variances between the tin-top sibling and the open-top version as soon as corrugations are traversed on the road surface. However after all is said and done wind-in-your-hair enthusiasts will still mumble - and rightly so - 'To hell with all that technical jargon . . . I want a convertible.'

And they're right. I'm splitting hairs here. Perhaps the wind-in-your-hair and starry skies above are far more important, not to mention the knock-you-over effect convertibles have on the beholder.

Cars now suffer minimally with the 'scuttle-shake' syndrome due to the amount of R&D that has been put into them. The recently arrived Saab 9-3 2.0TS Aero seems to have almost eliminated 'scuttle shake' with only slightest amount discernible and this only by checking the offending minute vibration on the inside rear-view mirror on the windscreen.

To better evaluate the Saab 9-3 Convertible we managed to rustle up two of its most natural rivals, the BMW 330Ci Convertible and Audi A4 3.0 Cabriolet. To the observer there is little to choose between these beautiful, sun-seeking machines with the choice coming down as to whether you fancy the now-ageing Bee-Emm over the classic, understated form of the Audi or the sleek, swooping lines of the Saab.

Due to the Saab's high waistline its standout feature is the treatment of the comparatively high rear deck with those two, neat 'streamline bulges' behind the rear seat headrests that are suitably hidden from view. They assist in hiding the protruding headrests so obvious on the Audi A4 and even more unsightly on the 330Ci.

The cockpits of the three are superb. And even though the Bee-Emm is the earliest in design terms it still stands out with the fine flowing shapes that ring the interior. The Saab almost as delectable but the dash lacks flair and the overall interior feel has less flow in it. The Audi A4 is refined but oh-so Audi conservative.

Naturally sun-seekers will mostly be driving with the hood down especially those luckier ones living in that most wonderful, sunny Gauteng weather - the finest of any city on the globe. To them it should be of interest to know that the Saab soft-top can be raised and latched in 20 seconds, the Bee-Emm's in 25 and the Audi's in a more leisurely 30.

Road holding is of a high quality on all three with the Bee-Emm having the edge with the Saab not far behind with its great improvement over its stodgy predecessors in this area. Whatever is said to the contrary, a finely balanced rear-wheel-driven car such as the BMW 330i is better disposed to road holding tuning.

The Audi instead is roped with the extra weight of the front-wheel-drive portion of its all-wheel-drive leading to it being less responsive than both rivals.

The Saab has overcome the negative idiosyncrasies of its front-wheel-drive set-up with a suspension layout that has been extensively upgraded, in particular the addition of ReAxs self-steering rear end on its advanced multilink suspension.

The Saab is somewhat lighter than its two rivals as both house bigger and heavier 3-litre 6-cylinder mills while the Saab uses a much lighter 4-cylinder 2-litre 16V DOHC motor . . . with a turbo. And that offers a wonderful power-to-weight ratio, which in turn assists in attaining better dynamic results. As a matter of interest the Aero is some 30kg lighter than the Bee-Emm with 14kW more power.

One need only check out the fuel consumption figures to see the results. At 9.7 litres per 100km it gains a huge amount over the BMW's 11.5 and 11.3 of the Audi. It should be remembered that a turbocharger effectively adds the equivalent 50% of cubic capacity and power to an engine while being so much lighter. And when you consider the gains in test performance terms they are particularly pleasing. The Saab 9-3 Aero comes out tops. And as neither the Bee-Emm nor the Audi open-tops has the latest-generation engines under their bonnets they will continue to play second fiddle to the quick Swede.

The best way to compare performance is over the standing quarter mile where the Aero's elapsed time of 16.1 seconds and top speed of 147km/h make it a sure challenge to the evergreen 330i's 16.3 and same exit speed.

But where the Saab scores well over its rivals here is its EuroNCAP 5-star safety certification gained in June 2004. Its DynaCage rollover system with heavily reinforced windscreen and active pop-up bars that assist interaction with airbags, belts and other features is a big plus factor.

The three have a host of features to long to mention here. Some of the more interesting on the Aero are the CargoSet Self Expanding Trunk, SAHR (Saab Head Restraints) that assist in reducing serious neck injuries by 75%, AVR (Advanced Voice Recognition) and foldable exterior mirrors. To take care of its top performance a Sports Chassis Kit is in also in place with a 10mm lowered suspension and stiffer shocks.

At R459 000, the Saab Aero 2.0T Convertible 6-speed competes well in price terms when compared to the R476 000 of the BMW 330i Convertible AT or the R483 000 of the Audi A4 3.0 Cabriolet AT. And with the Saab Convertible you have something else that wind-in-your-hair buyer seeks. The two Germans are old-hat in terms of the market and with the sort of individualism open-top exhibit the rarity value of the Saab Aero is another factor they will find to their liking.

And perhaps there has been some turmoil in the Saab market of late, but with the muscle of GM behind this fine marque these minor problems are now a thing of the past.

New Saab 9-5 Range: Progressive Design and Enhanced Driver Appeal
The new Saab 9-5 Sedan and SportEstate range will be revealed at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Building on the Saab’s core values of progressive design and sporty driver involvement, the new 9-5 incorporates new styling and improved handling characteristics.

It features all-new front bodywork, with a bold new 'face' inspired by the Saab 9X concept car and a fresh interior that includes an updated dash and trim.

Excellent chassis dynamics have been further refined, giving the driver even closer control with faster, more direct responses for sportier handling characteristics without compromising ride quality and refinement.

Under the bonnet, the Saab 9-5 is available in a unique range of engine choices - petrol, diesel and ethanol. The all-turbo line-up includes:

          * a new diesel engine available in Europe,
          * a Saab BioPower engine that can run on any mixture of ethanol (E85) * fuel and gasoline for the Swedish market, and
          * increased power for the top-of-the-range Aero model.

Overall, the muscular visual impact of the new 9-5 Sedan and SportEstate reflects the enhancements under the bodywork.

The refinements to Saab's flagship are designed to increase its appeal to customers who value modern, progressive design and a rewarding driving experience.

The new Saab 9-5 range is targeted for launch in Australia and New Zealand in the second quarter of next year.

This interesting one-off was made but a Saab fan out of a late-model old style 900 (you know, the angular ones). It was an attempt at a sportier version I believe with sleeker lines, a Saab 9000 interior and Saab 9000 taillights.

I have to find more info on this (I remember I had read up on it at one point) but the car overall looks too tall (because of the old platform) and narrow, as it's very wide headlights squash the front grille. Interesting because of it meld of old Saab 900 and GM-Saab 900 looks, but still fugly.

Trolhatten Saab has some spy shots of what could be Saab’s latest Subaru re-badge. With that obvious Tribeca-styled rear, we would have said it was the 9-6x, expected to augment the new Saab SUV line as a 2007 model. Trouble is, this one’s a three-door, which means either it’s a concept being worked up for the Detroit show, or Saab’s going way out on a limb, building a competitor to the 2003 Isuzu Rodeo Sport. TS notes it could also be a prototype Saab 9-4x, a small SUV crossover expected to be built on GM’s Epsilon platform (Saab 9-3, Chevrolet Malibu). Nothing materialized at Frankfurt, so we’re expecting a Detroit unveiling. Maybe Tokyo?

We were mildly disappointed when rumors of a new Saab concept appearing at the New York Auto Show last March failed to pan out. Instead, we satisfied our urge to heckle by throwing eggs at the Chevy 9-7x Trailblazer (the poor dear). Now Autocar is reporting Saab has ok’d production of the rumored vehicle — its latest rebadged Subaru, the 9-6x, a luxury SUV based on the Tribeca. Sources say the crossover SUV will be built by Subaru at its US factory in Indiana, starting next year, to the tune of around 15,000 annually. We’ll be good, we promise.

                                                  -----------------------------------
JAJ: From a brand point of view, developing and producing Saabs in Sweden is necessary. Building some niche cars in Trollhattan is not enough. If the production is moved completely outside Sweden, it's doubtful whether the brand will survive.

AB: What is the biggest risk in moving Saab outside Sweden?
JAJ: Saab would loose its unique Swedish and Scandinavian elements. My task is to show Detroit the importance of development and production in Sweden.

AB: What will a Saab look like in the future?
JAJ: There has been quite a lot of ambiguity over the years. Turbos, hatchbacks, sedans, large wagons. The only car that has been constant is the convertible, and that is our greatest success. For example, I believe that we should not prioritize load capacity - the 9-3 SportCombi is just right. The cars should be driver oriented, not load-luggers.

AB: Moving the next generation 9-3 to Rüsselsheim has already been decided. But what about the next 9-5?
JAJ: It is decided that there will be a new 9-5, but not where it's going to be produced or which platform it will be based on. It could be the Epsilon 2 (like the next generation 9-3) but also another one.

AB: What are the chances of keeping the car in Trollhattan?
JAJ: My ambition is to attract production to Trollhattan. This requires that Trollhattan is so good that GM says "let's build cars here". The target is now to show that we are right up there with the best. Next year we're going to produce five different cars in Trollhattan. Two models, the 9-3 SportCombi and the Cadillac BLS, are completely new launches. If we can make that work, then Trollhattan has a chance.

AB: Carl-Peter Forster (GM Europe president) told me that Trollhattan could be a niche car manufacturer and that the 9-3 convertible could be moved to Sweden. And maybe a future SUV. What is your comment on that?
JAJ: Producing 20,000 convertibles a year in Trollhattan is not enough. We're not likely to get the coming small SUV either. No, we must try to keep the 9-5.

AB: Talking about SUV's, what's your opinion on the 9-7X?
JAJ: It's completely right from a short term point of view. We need more models quickly and the 9-7X cost almost nothing to develop. Same thing with the 9-6X which is based on the Fuji Heavy Industries Subaru Tribeca. But of course, a big frame-built truck that consumes a lot of fuel is not the future. I drove the 9-7X very gently from Gothenburg to Stockholm, with a consumption of 15 liters/100 km. That's obviously not good. The coming 9-4X will be a completely different car, a crossover with car-like qualities. It will also be sold in Europe.

AB: A couple of years ago you had an almost finished four-wheel-drive version of the 9-3 SportCombi in Trollhattan. Wouldn't it have been better to finish that, rather than go for alternatives like the 9-2X and 9-7X?
JAJ: In 2002, Saab was making enormous losses. Detroit demanded that we put an end to that and sort out our finances. That was completely right. We had to take a time out. And developing the 9-3X would have been much more expensive than the 9-2X and 9-7X. Moreover, we had to get new models out quickly.

AB: But the 9-2X is a complete flop!
JAJ: It is correct that the car sold badly as long as the price was 10 -15 % over that of the Impreza's. But this summer we lowered the price to a symbolic amount over the Impreza price, and then it sold well.

2006/2007- Sonett IV (baseado no pontiac solistice[|)])
                                                          2007/2008 - 9-4x (baseado no chervolet S3X[|)])
                                                          2008/2009 - 9-5 II
                                                          2009/2010 - 9-3 III

WTF???
