Entirely redesigned Bentley SUV to be called Falcon - report

Recent report indicates that Bentley's upcoming SUV could be called Falcon and is expected to look entirely different than the concept.
The Bentley EXP 9 F concept is anything but a beautiful car. However, this might change according to AutomobileMag who is reporting that the SUV will be redesigned from the ground up by Luc Donckerwolke, Bentley's new design chief. The vehicle has been given the green light by the product strategy team and could reach showrooms by 2015.
Other pending premium car projects on VW Group's list for at least 12 months include the Lamborghini Urus, Bugatti Galibier and the Bentley Azure convertible.

Falcon?!

While at Pebble Beach, Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer sat down with Inside Line to elaborate on plans for the production version of its controversial EXP 9 F concept SUV. As recently as a month ago, the blue behemoth was still being talked about as if a final decision hadn't been made, Durheimer didn't appear to show any reticence when discussing what the report cited as "the 2015 production date."

The big news is that no "radical redesign" of its exterior is planned before it arrives. That could be wordplay hinging on the term "radical," since reports of a redesign surfaced the same month the EXP 9 F was revealed, and a report in Autocar last month cited Volkswagen Group sources as saying "the front and rear end styling would need to be modified" for production. On the other hand, Dürheimer told Inside Line that Bentley customers rated the looks of the SUV "only a 7 out of 10."

We're not sure if he meant the word "only" in humility or sarcasm; Dürheimer has plenty of cheek, as evidenced in his line that Bentley has "solved [the] problem" of there being no SUV on the market above the $170,000 mark.

At whatever price that ends up being, the EXP 9 F will be able to go off-road but won't be a devoted off-roader, capable enough, however, to handle Middle Eastern dunes, polo fields and yacht launches. And don't let anyone tell you that Bentley doesn't care about the help, either: the lauded interior, which isn't expected to change much for production, might get optional third-row seating for the owner's au pair. All those Swedish lasses can rest easy now.

Bentley CEO Says SUV Nearing Final Approval, will Feature a Modified Design

Last October, it was reported that due to the European crisis, the VW Group might delay a decision regarding the production of two luxury SUVs for its Bentley and Lamborghini brands previewed last year by the EXP 9 F and Urus Concepts respectively. We still don't know what the German group's plans are for Lamborghini, but Bentley boss Wolfgang Schreiber told Autonews Europe that the company is "close to a decision to build" the EXP 9 F, with an expected introduction date in 2016.

Schreiber added that the concept's controversial styling will be toned down to bring it more in line with the rest of Bentley's lineup.
"The main intention was not to show the final styling but to get feedback from the market," Schreiber told reporters at last week's Detroit auto show. "If you saw the styling, you would say, 'That is a real Bentley.'"

Bentley's SUV will share its underpinnings with respective models from Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen, with Schreiber stating that it likely will be offered with a V8 and possibly a W12 option.
"Bentleys are luxury cars, but people like this effortless acceleration and torquey engines," he said, according to Autonews Europe.

Bentley chief Wolfgang Schreiber said that a positive decision was expected on the SUV "very soon". The model would enter production in 2015 or 2016, should the production sign-off be granted in the next few weeks as expected.

Schreiber said just a few "last hurdles" of the business case needed to be assembled, one of which was where the model would be built.

Two options are being proposed: one is for the still-unnamed Bentley SUV to be built in Crewe, and the other is for it to be built in Bratislava alongside the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg models on which the SUV would be based.

"We want to build sustainable cars that make money," said Schreiber. "But we have the components and the craftsmanship skills in Crewe."

Schreiber said that capacity was not an issue at either plant – 3000 to 4000 units per year are being projected – but instead that a whole other suite of options was being weighed up, including logistics, investment, craftsmanship, knowledge and labour rates.

As a board, Bentley would prefer the model to be built in Crewe but Schreiber said that this was not to say that the Volkswagen Group board was pushing for the model to be built in Bratislava.

"We are all fighting for the best decision for Bentley," said Schreiber. "Everyone in VW knows how motivated and skilled the workers in Crewe are and their interior craftsmanship is a true asset."

If the model were to be built in Bratislava, it would be the first Bentley sold without the famed 'Made in Crewe, England' plaque since some examples of the Flying Spur were built in Dresden in 2005/06. Instead, a 'Designed in Crewe, England' plaque would likely feature.

Even if the model ended up being built in Bratislava, almost all the interior components would be shipped over from Crewe to give the model the exclusive Bentley feel.

Schreiber admitted that from the outside the decision for the SUV to be signed off for production seemed long and complicated, but in reality it was a fairly straightforward internal checklist that was being worked towards and there was "nothing unusual" about this project.

The SUV that is expected to be signed off for production will look very different from the concept model revealed at the Geneva motor show last year, Schreiber revealed.

"It's completely different now and already ready for final development," he said. "It has the DNA of the current cars but looks even more special as a very modern SUV.

"It has lots of new technology, a hand-crafted wood and leather interior and a powerful, torquey engine with effortless acceleration."

He admitted there was "room for improvement" with the design of the original concept.

More than 2000 orders have already been placed for the model, despite no one having seen the final look or knowing the final price.

"That is testament to the fact that people don't question the idea of such a car as a Bentley," said Schreiber.

Sales director Kevin Rose said the price of the new Bentley SUV would pick up where the new Range Rover left off. With versions of the Range Rover eventually expected to come in at around £125,000, this is the anticipated entry price for the new Bentley.

Around 50 per cent of sales of the new SUV are expected to come from the US and China, with the Middle East, Russia and Europe next in line with an even split.

The new SUV would form a key part of Bentley hitting its sales target of 15,000 units per year by 2018, almost double the 8510 registered in 2012.

With regards to the name, both Rose and Schreiber confirmed it would not be Falcon, and that the firm was working on a name that would work across its global markets.

                                Bentley SUV - Autocar

Bentley has released a new official preview image of its forthcoming SUV.

The image, which only shows the front of the Bentley SUV, reveals the new model will keep the firm's hallmark mesh grille with round front light clusters and traditional SUV proportions.

Bentley's SUV will become its fourth model line, and has been described as being a "thoroughbred" Bentley, which will represent the brand's "hallmarks of luxury, performance, quality and craftsmanship.

"It will create a completely new segment in the SUV market."
The company has claimed that when the model launches in 2016 it will become the most powerful SUV on sale. A plug-in hybrid variant of the SUV is already scheduled to launch in 2018, with an electric range of around 25 miles. Bentley recently revealed it has already received over 2000 pre-orders for the SUV model, despite no customers seeing the car. The company is aiming to sell around 3000 units of the SUV per year.

The company has already passed its first milestone with the new car, with a successful summer test of a prototype. Winter testing is scheduled to get under way at the end of this week, while the firm's production facility in Crewe is already gearing up for production.
An extra 250 staff have already been hired to help build the new SUV, with more planned to join before production gets underway.

Company boss Wolfgang Schreiber told Autocar the project was "exactly on time". While pricing for the new model has yet to be revealed, company officials say the SUV will attract "a premium price as you would expect from a Bentley". Pricing the model above a high-end Range Rover, as suggested by officials, would mean an entry price of at least £125,000.

The launch of its first SUV model forms part of an £800 million investment in the firm's Crewe headquarters. Bentley plans to sell 15,000 vehicles per year by 2018.
