MotoGP

Who slept the worst last night: Miguel Oliveira

After strong races at the beginning of the second half of the season, Miguel Oliveira can no longer do much in the overseas races - is his career in a dead end?

Miguel Oliveira has not yet had a top 10 result in the overseas races

I would like to address the situation of Miguel Oliveira in today's column. Because somehow he got into a dead end in his career. In principle, the Portuguese is for me one of the most talented and clever drivers of the current generation.

Let's take a look back at the 2018 Moto2 season. At that time, Francesco Bagnaia and Oliveira fought a World Cup duel at the highest level. Both have finished all races in the World Cup points and thus delivered practically a perfect season.

In the end, Bagnaia had nine more World Cup points in the account. But I don't think it can be said to this day that Oliveira is a "much worse" driver than Bagnaia. After all, Oliveira has already shown fantastic races in MotoGP.

KTM engineers wanted to take a different direction

Of course, the motorcycle plays a big role. In the current MotoGP, a driver can no longer make the big difference, as was perhaps the case a few years ago. The technology has become extremely complex.

And that was also a reason why Oliveira lost his place at KTM to Jack Miller. "Jack first has to show that he is faster than Miguel," KTM Motorsport boss Pit Beirer said last summer.

If you look at Miller's season so far, he hasn't actually shown it either. But for the development of the overall project, it was extremely important for KTM to get the Australian with his crewchief Christian Pupulin from Ducati.

"In some areas, we technically had a clear vision of where we want to go," KTM engineer Sebastian Risse recently explained to me. "Our top drivers acquired a certain driving style early on, which left a lot to electronics."

With five victories, Miguel Oliveira is still the most successful KTM driver
"If someone has such a driving style, then as a technician you have the opportunity to say: 'I think you can do it better. I'll give you the freedom. If you don't use them, you'll slow down."

"You can do one race, do two races. You see how the results don't come and you lose performance. You think the driver could do that, but in the end you need a driver to implement it that way."

"He only implements this if he has experience with another manufacturer and has seen data from other competitors. With this, Jack has exemplified something that we had in mind for a long time. He has shown that this can work."

Engineer Sebastian Risse has been part of KTM's MotoGP project from the beginning
In the previous year, KTM had four drivers who only knew the RC16. However, the engineers needed confirmation that certain things can be done differently. That's why Miller's feedback was so valuable, especially during the winter tests and at the beginning of the season.

"I think the other important point that Jack brought to us in the project is the time attack. We had two drivers whose strength was not that, but whose strength was the race distance," says Risse about Oliveira and Brad Binder.

"If you have someone who shows how it works, it also helped Brad a lot." KTM also brought Alberto Giribuola into the team. The former crewchief of Andrea Dovizioso and Enea Bastianini is a performance engineer for all KTM drivers with his experience.

How Wilco Zeelenberg characterizes Oliveira

With the change to RNF-Aprilia, Oliveira wanted to prove his talent and his class. Because with the previous year's model, it is not involved in the development. In principle, it is about optimizing performance and putting yourself in the picture with strong performance.

In the first half of the season, Oliveira unfortunately attracted the bad luck almost magically. He couldn't do anything for the accidents in Portimao and Jerez. The fact that he always suffered injuries was extremely bitter. I take my hat off to him that he fought.

At the beginning of the second half of the season, Miguel Oliveira showed some strong races
The second half of the season then began as one could expect from him. A strong fourth place in Silverstone, with tire problems still fifth in Barcelona and sixth place in Misano. He seemed to have found the track and was able to show his talent and speed.

But in the overseas races, the thread is broken again. There was no top 10 result. I asked RNF team manager Wilco Zeelenberg about his general assessment of Oliveira. "Sometimes he's too clever," says the former racing driver.

"If you were to talk about a weakness, then sometimes he should just switch off and attack. He is very clever and intelligent. For example, how he passes on the information to the engineers. He does it very well so that they know what to do."

"He knows exactly how to drive these motorcycles just below the limit in order to be very constant. It doesn't cost him much energy to do that either. He can drive a very good rhythm alone. That is one of his strengths."

Oliveira urgently needs good results again

Recently, his teammate Raul Fernandez also showed good approaches and an increase. Slowly, the Spaniard understands the complexity of MotoGP better. I guess that there is even more potential in him. Let's wait and see if he can implement this.

That's why I think Oliveira really needs to be careful. He has to show again what is in him. Otherwise, when the big transfer poker for 2025/26 starts, he would not have good cards in his hand next spring.

Honda has requested, but has not yet submitted a concrete offer
Or does he pull out and drives for Honda in 2024? From a sporting point of view, this would be a risky maneuver. Will a well-endowed salary compensate for the thoughts of the fall statistics of the current Honda drivers? With his cleverness and talent, he would certainly be interesting for Honda.

In Australia, Oliveira has stated that Honda has not yet put a concrete offer on his table. We have also heard nothing behind the scenes that something is moving in this regard. So Oliveira Stand seems to be fulfilling his two-year contract with Aprilia today. We do not know at the moment what specific plans Honda has to occupy Marc Marquez's place.
